With the arri val here of officials ef the National Casket Company Including President C. W. Chappie, of Oneida, N. T.; Treasurer P. O. Chaae, of Rochester, X. Y.. together with Mr. John T. Tut tie, of Syracuse, attorney for the com pany, and Mr. W. H. Donnell and Mr. F. E. Long-well, company execu tives, It la learned that the Southern plant of the National Casket Company to be located on the French Broad" river just outside the city limits of Asheville will be considerably larger than originally planned. There will be three separate buidlngs, all con structed of re-en forced concrete, and the total expenditures. Including ma chinery, will be about $12 5,000. It ia expected that 160 skilled laborers wilt be employed and the operation of the plant will furnish a home mar ket for the quantity of different woods of western North Carolina. Tho plant will be known as a "di mension" plant In which material for asketa will be shaped and sent to the finishing plants. It is understood, however, that later a finishing plant will be located near the dimension plant. Young Man Who Attempted Forgn C'lieck Receives Eighteen Months "T-ils Court He Was Doped h a St ranger. Special to Ths Observer Asheville, Feb. 1. In Hupcrlor Court yesterday M. M. Hensley, a young fellow 21 years of age. from Marshall, was sentenced to the county roads for IS months on conviction of attempted forgery. Hensley, it was alleged, attempted to cash a $ r, 0 0 forged check here one night in De cember. He was in company with another man. a stranger, and when picked up the stranger made a quick get-away. Hensley made an interesting spiel to the court. He said that he reach ed Asheville from Marshall on the af ternoon of December 29th. 1808; that when he stepped from the train he was suffering with a headache and going Into the street, met a stranger. For some reason ths stranger engag ed In conversation with Hensley. ac cording to the young man's Ktate ment, and Hensley told the man of his headache. Hensley says that the stranger told him he had mighty good headache cure and gave Hensley some. Hensley wijs that after that he didn't remember anything until he ' come to" in the city lock-up and asked what he was doing there. He said the "knock-out" drops had done their work. He told Judge Ferguson that he doesn't remember anything about the check transaction; that he professed religion about five months ago and still believes that he is all right, religiously. Ackert, of the Southern Railway Company, has written J. H. Tucker, of this place, president of the Southern Baptist Assembly, which controls Bluernont, In the Black Mountain section, to ths effect that the Southern will this summer operate an additional train service between Asheville snd Bluernont to accommo date the travel to and from the as sembly grounds. It is understood that ths train will leave Asheville In the afternoon be tween 4 and 5 o'clock, running to Bluernont or further and returning leave Bluernont at $ o'clock In the morning. There is reason to believe that the train will not be made to terminate at Bluernont, but that It will be extended and made to run as far as Marlon or Hickory. Spring Hope Baptists Secure New Pastor. Special to The Observer. Spring Hope. Feb. li. Rev. D. F. Putnam, of Benson, has been called to the pastorate of the Baptist church at this place and of the church at Nashville. He has accepted the call and will assume the duties of the pas torate at a very early date. Mr. Put nam Is a native of Cleveland county, a Wake Forest man. and the people feel that they are fortunate In securing him as their pastor.
