CUAHLOTTE DAILY OBSKRVKK, JJlitJAKi 'JA, 1909. Financial anH r Commercial COTTOS MARKET. ... Kew York, Feb. Th. cotton market "' more aetiv to-day with the close eey at a net decline of 11 D point.. -'The market opnt steady at a decline 1 of. 1 point to an advanca of I points, near month being relatively easy, owing to . lower cables, while lata position (alt th eflect of continued dry weather In the 'bouthwest and good trade account from t the Wert. Immediately following the fall .price worked a point or two higher than .lat week'a close, but there was no snap , to the demand, and shortly alter mid-day the market became weak under talk of -esler spots, uncoriQrcn.il rumors of rain to the Southwest, and gelling by W4U f Street which was Supposed to be for the pufooiibt, or people Interested In both Stocks and cotton, and who had found y&t necessary to reduce commitments, ow ing to the weakness of the stock market ' ' tttop loss orders were uncovered on the decline and while there was active buy ' I rig the demand seemed to eome chlfiy front shorts with last prices at practicality -the lowest level of the day. The South S.was a seller here during the middle ses sion which had a tendency to color the rumors tor eajtler spots- and the Southern spot markets officially reported were un changed i cent lower, while exporters' limits were said to ba generally H cent lower. The New Orleans market was closed fori the day but will be re-opened for business to-morrow. Sales, futures, tic, estimated at J00.OGO. Receipts at the ports to-day 20,(60, against 25,827 last week and 24,845 last year. For the week 140,000 bales, against 140,841 last week and 121. 066 last year. To day's receipts at New Orleans (not In) against 8,253 last year, and at Houston 8,870, against (,773 last year. stock market. New York, Feb, 23. Suspicion and dis trust of the speculative position in the stock market spread with rapid growth to-day and brought the fabric of values down with a crash. The conviction was quick in forming after the throwing open of the iteel market to competition last week, that the stock market position was an artificial one and had been brought about by (alee assumptions ef the trade position. Various factora combined to accentuate the weakness to-day, and it gained cumulative force. London sent very heavy selling orders to the New York market for ekecution as soon as trading began, and this helped the down ward men of prices which began after the opening. A new set of weakening factors came in the Inferences drawn from the recon vening of the Supreme Court at Wash ington. Decisions were handed down against the New York Central for rebat ing, and the speculative element, for rea sons which a lawyer might not follow, jumped to the conclusion that a later de cision would uphold the constitutionality of the commodUles clause of the Hep burn law and so constrain the anthracite railroads to get rid of their mining prop erties. Another weak group of stocks was fotind In the minor railroads that have been exploited for rapid advances on assumptions of mergers or benefits to accrue from their purchase by larger sys tems. Of the steel trade position the speculative contingent .was disposed to j take the gloomiest view. There was only a slight check when ttie room shorts took the day's profltef but the last break ef the day was the most demoralized seen throughout, and closed prices at the low est. Reading sold as low as 118. a loss for the day of 10 points,, United States Steel sold down to 41Vi and closed at the lowest, a loss In price since Saturday of 4H points. Prices at the end of the day were off from I to over 8 points for all the active stocks. Bonds were weak. Total sales par val ue 17,890.000. IV S. Hubbard Bros. Co. a Cotton Letter. Special to The Observer. New York, Feb. 23. To the liqulJa tion of the past few days was added to-day the selling by the customers of Wall Street houses of the cotton which they have been holding in anticipation of a fevtval In the demand from spin ner. Spinner, however, are not find ing any .demand for yarns, either here or In Manchester, and while cloth is In fair demand, It la not as active as In December, partly due to timidity of 4l nterprlaea pending the revl gloh of the tariff and partly to the fear that the breakdown in the steel situation will, for the moment, cur tail business. For one of these' rea sons, there was a continued liquidation from the opening, to the claee, which was ateady at lowest pricee for this trop. We do not believe Liverpool will decline as much as expected in the morning. Chit-ago tinaiiv and Provision. Chicago, Feb. B. Wheat for May dellr ery sold here to-day atllff per bush.l, a gain of cent compared with the for mer high record mark for the season, established last Saturday.
