Both declared that tlo y wer Instructed to stand up lor the bar ter as it came to the Representatives, but both were sure that the people were strongly opposed to Its radical ' features. Personally, they could not defend the draft, and of course offi cially, their position was neceari!y compromised. 1 his, with a speech by Mr. J. THE 4C S' FIQHT. With thufe sections cleared In their minds, the Representatives, called on Col. W B. Rodman for a statement relative to the clauses affecting bis cllftnt company, the Charlotte F.lec trlc Railway, Light and Power Com pany. This also was on Thursday and during the remainder of that day and all of Friday the battle narrowed down to Colonel Rodman and Mr. K. h Preston, who said he represented the city. They fought fiercely. The corporation's attorney made it ap pear that Mr I'reston had come to kabifh and consulted the Attorney C.-uerai and ex-Jud-e Shepherd to rind out if It was leal to insert cer ium provisions In the charter. These, h" said, hC neer ,roi seen by a . i.-ie human being in ''harlotte. Cnl 5hH Rodman held his heart firmly through the entire controversy until Friday afternoon when Mr I'reston iritrodui ed another so-eall. l amend ment relative to the machinery for ..unrolling the corporations That was too much for the other attorney and he inject-d some feeling Into his discission. He said It was very evi dent that Mr. I'reston was employed to prosecute the 4C' by some one iri charlotte. He argued that he was willing to have the corporations con trolled, hut not b a cty which was naturally pre)udiie,l against I hem. The Corporation c ini mission wa the only properly const It u' ed body to reg ulate public utilities Mr. Preston wanted the cits to regulate and con trol both service and rales and de clared that the board of aldermen had so decl.'i.ed It-elf.
