Much has beep said in the exchanges In terms complimentary in connection with this anniversary, but not one that we have seen goes beyond truthfulness in do ing so. Editor Caldwell has forged himself into the very forefront of .vise ami s'.nble editors and has taken The Observer along up by the side of the best metropolitan papers. Southern Publisher. The "new" Charlotte Observer last week celehrated lta 17th anniversary under the management and editorship of the brilliant newspaper man. Mr, .1 P. Caldwell, and has Sir.ce b. en re ceiving the congratulations of ihe press of the State on this fact. The Observer makes the announcement tn becomlti? modesty, but Mr. Cabl.vell has a right to crow a little. There Is no oiicetion but what It Is the fore most dally paper In the State. There is something about the paper, outside of Its excellent news service, that (Ives it prestiije and we believe that to be, mil, only the arrangement of the matter but the modest head lines. The paper han an individuality and we belice thSit comes from one man being In charge, with the ability and experi ence, to hive direct supervision over not only the desks 'but the cases a well -Taylorpville s out. The Charlotte Observer has rounded out 17 years under Its preseru man agement. It began with primitive equipment and meagre patronage. Steadily it (has expanded and develop ed until now it has reached a place not surpassed Jn Southren Journalism. H has often run counter to public sen timent and advocated policies that cost It money In our judgment It has often been wrong, but never for one moment have we doubted its honesty. It ir, perfectly candid and fearless In the expression of Its views, never hedges or trims or vacillates. It standa fcur-square to every wind that blows. It pursues a broad-minded polljy, treating every question or cause or sect with perfect fairness. Its editor Is a marvelously gifted man and every inch a gentleman. Its offico force are young men of capacity and sense. In a word. The Observer is a really great newspaper of which, as a North Car olinian, we are very proud indeed. Charity and Children. Much ls explained when we discov er thut Elder Caldwell, of The Char lotte Observer, got his editorial train ing on The Landmark.
