'UilAKLOXJLi; DAILY OBSERVER, SA'lUiuXa.1, MAjtOn 2,, 19W. I Financial and COTTON MARKET. Kew Tork, March tt. Th cotton mar ket tu verjf aulet KMiay and fluctua Uoni were ourirw wlUl the close Quiet net unchanged to X points lower. The market opened steady at a decline of a point to an advance of 1 point, near month beinf relatively easy In reaponue to the cables- Offering were Utrhi wiiile "there waa lorn taiylns by room traders and ' for Liverpool straddle account on whi$ clll, vhlfh prices steadied uprifht after tne and at on time 'ruled about 2 to $ points net higher with the late months relatively tirm, .Reports from Liverpool that the move ment In favor of short time In Lancashire- did not result In any organized curtailment probably helped to steady the market but generally (peaking there was no fresh feature In the situation and during the afternoon prices eased off to a net loss of about 1 to 5 points. This waa followed by a slight orally at the close on covering, but there Is nothing on the long side or to suggeac that the trade was changing its attltade of wait ing a nearer view of new crop prospects. Southern spot markets officially reported were generally unchanged. There were rumors during the early afternoon of easier Southern offerings, but there was nothing definite In this direction, and' while clearing weather was considered favorable In the Eastern belt, further showers would have been, deemed desirable in the Southwest, whereas the weather map showed no precipitation of consequence anywhere In the South, and generally fair weather was forecasted. Receipts at the ports to-day 10.1 bales sgalnet 18,399 last week and 17.123 last year. For the week 100.000 bales against 96,488 last week and 83.3S1 last year. To day's receipts at Nsw Orleans 1.804 bales against .460 last year, and at Houston S.128 bales against 6,329 last year. STOCK &i1KKT. New York, March 26. The dullness of the stock market was accentuated to day but the character of the market was but little changed- The professional observers of the dealings are Inclined to argue favorably from the power of re sistance manifested. Reaction Is post poned In spite of the running out of the demand and from this It I Inferred thai there Is no Inclination to sell stocks. The demand remains, however, at a very low stase. Interest to-day centred chiefly In a few lower grade stocks and the move ments in these had no other reason, so far as was revealed, than the suspected operations of pools In the stocks. The railroad stooks In which the Hawley in- i terest Is dominant showed some life, and from this It was Inferred that additional railroad deals are Intended by that op- I erator. News of the sale of a block of bonds by the Jones and Laughlln 8'eel Company gave an Impression of confi dence In early need for additional steel producing facilities. The statement that interest due in April on Erie bonds would be psld by the company Instead of the purchase of the coupons by the company's bankers which, baa been the practice for several months. Was taken as evidence of growing finan cial strength by that company. There Waa ati advancing tendency In quotations tor copper although the market for that metal wa said to hav quieted down again after the more active demand earlier In the week. - Bonds were Arm. Total sales, par value. 13,662.000. IT. p. bonds were unchanged on call. Total sales to-day 434,100 shares. Includ ing: Sugar 1.300; Tobacco t000; A C I 100; C. New York, Merch 26 To-day' majk t i remained the same narrow, unsatisfac tory affair. Arbitrage buying in May was ajraln an early feature, although the demand wa In lea volume and failed to i make the same Impression as heretofore. ! As this buyln; stopped the market quickly lost the small advance under : scattered liquidation. Weather conations remain unchanged, which was about a i Standoff. Clear weather Is beneficial In the Atlantlo Btates whil more rainfall would be advantageous In Texas. Spot markets remain dull at unchanged prices With the same lack of demand that has Worked against an advance for some time. Chicago appeared to be gradually replacing some of their recent July sales fcy purchases of the distant deliveries which orders resting under the market ' are an Important sustaining factor. Th South remain apathetic, not caring to sell at this level whU they will net buy until their cotton moves again. Naxal Stores. Charleston, 8. C, March J6. Turpen (julet. mi- Rosin quiet.
