May 18 Mrs. Mshala Slgmon. artfe of Mr. Lemon 81e-mon, celeBrate her ltd birthday a few days aga. There waa a large gath ering at the hosae of this rather r marhahle couple. Mr. sfnd Mrs 81b--non were married In 1846 and o have passed their (4th milestone ef married life together. They are per haps the oldest couple in the coun ty. Te them have been born nine chil dren, four sons and five daughters, all of whom are still living. Mr. Bigmon went out in 1861 with Com pany F. Ssth Regiment, but being over 45 he returned home, where he remained seme time. Later he Join ed a company of cavalry from Burke couaty, but being unable to stand tiding he was discharged and sent home. Later he Joined the Senior Reserves under Colonel Hoke. His oldest son. M. 8. Hlgmon was a mem ber of Co. B. 2nd Cavalry. This aged couple has 52 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren living, so tliat to day they can gather around their fireside 110 descendants, without counting the husbands and wives of children and arrandchildreii. which if added would Increase the number to JIT. C May 13 A prelimi nary .hearing was held yesterday In the case of John R. Milwood, before the United States commissioner here. Milwood mi charged with obtaining the money on a check which was Is sued by the UnlteJ States marshal In favor of another J. ft. Milwood last October. The evidence showed that Milwood cashed the check, although he had never been a wltnesa. A cer tain merchant In town testified that Milwood asked him about the check when he received me, and that he advised him to have same cashed and then make good In case there was any trouble about the matter. Durham.' May 13. Work upon the new theatre and municipal bulM ing has begun and the contract for the roof has jleen let to J. T. Jones, of Raleigh. The contract calls for completion September 15. There Is little doubt that the work can be fin ished In time for the opening of the season. The floor of the old academy Is being torn out so that excavation necessary for a ground floor stage. Is being made. The aeason will open the 1st of October and the bookings thus far have been the best that Dur ham has had. The chamber of commerce has been notified by the Norfolk A Southern Railroad Com pany that it will on or before June i0 extend the run of the train whioh ow runs from Raleigh to Chocowin Ity so that.it will run through from Raleigh to Beaufort. This change will aleo cause some changes IrKthe pres ent schedules one of which. 11 ls said, will cause the trains which now meet here about 7:10. to reach here an hour earlier. The promised change Is one which Newbern people have been wanting for a year or more, but until the present they have nev er succeeded In their effort to bring the Raleigh train here.
