Will Aiken's cheering- effusion t the top of this story would fill the bill. In 102 when Helena was trav eling in exceptionally fast company. Will Aiken's dally "peem" which al ways topped the baseball stop in The Independent was an Important fea ture of the sport page. After a hur ried glance at the first few lines It required no further reading to know what had happened the day before. If Helena won you could see "Dixie" sticking out all over Aiken's verse, but If we were the under dog it was sure a case of "Massa's In the Cold, Cold around." The Independent Is not able at this writing to assure the fans an Aiken poem every morning- before breakfast. We wish we could. But the ocie-thne author is so "busy now adays as director general In the ex ecutives office at the State capltol that an eocaatonal epic from the pro lino pen Of the best baseball poet west of the Susequehanna river is all we can promise. I noticed recently an editorial in The Observer hitting the sarcasm of youth's Companlan In respect to the Mecklenburg Declaration of Indepen dence. Aa an offset to The Compan ion's) Idea as to the "myth," I copy from Comfort, a fatally paper publish ed In Augusta, Me., and having more than a million subscribers In the United States. In writing of the month of May It says: "Historically, May has no very bril liant record of accomplishments. Still there are a few big events to Its credit. Dewey destroyed the Hapnlsh fleet at Manilla. May 31. 1198; the first English settlement wks made at Jamestown. Va., May 13. 1(07; the Mecklenburg Declaration of Indepen dence was promulgated May 20, 17 75, more than a year before the Phila delphia Declaration which we cele brate on the Fourth of July; the good Queen Victoria, of England, was horn May 24, and the present Caar of Russia-was born May 18, 1868. May tins contributed no President of the Unit ed States, nor has June for that mat ter, and September only got into the presidential lint on the 4th of March last, with President Taft. But If May has contributed no 'Presidents it has taken none away, for no Presi dent has died in May. August Is the only other- month In which no Presi dent ha died." 8a Comfort classes our Mevklen burg Declaration as one of the few "His; events taking place In the month of May since history began It work." When President Taft gets through with the 20th It will be safely puu 1 lined in all the world and its authen ticity to he doubted no more. A wealthy contractor of Baltimore, John P. Brady, has set up a monu ment on hla farm, near the city, to Adam, the' first man. He wanted no toriety bad. If any many ever didn't need a monument It I Adam. He ha been dead a long time but 1 not for gotten ty any mean. When you read of a funeral there's Adam's work. "As In Adam all die." He lived a long time after his expulsion from the garden. "And all the days that Adam lived wore nine hundred and thirty years: and he died." From the first he was a very Important per son. He was authorized to name err living creature. He also gave the name of Eve to his wife. He was driven out from the beautiful para dlse in which God placed him for hi sake the ground wn cursed. But there is much of It that Is very pro ductive, when properly worked. How ever, it take labor to ret it out. "In til sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of It waat thou taken-; foY dust thou art, and unto dust bait thou return." That is one doc trine that even the skeptic does not Question. Adam I well enough known and Mr. Brady could have need hla money to a much better pur . poee than the monument to hla mem ory. "This I the first shaft In Ameri ca dedicated to Adam, the first man. Bo passes the glory of the world.' Mr. Brady was a long time finding It oat "We are always asking little chil dren who was the first man and wom an? That is about the first Bible taaght them.
