English and Mrs. Eatelle Stewart, complimentary to Miss Pattle Lee, announcing her engagement . to Mr. Warren Stack, of Monroe. Only the intimate girl friend of the brlde-to-t -were Invited. Thesa were as fol lows: Misses Edna Harris, Bess Dun lap, Frances Alexander, Nancy Wat kins, Lessle Houston, Brigtit Ofburn, Kate Fairley, Cornie Falrley. Beth English. 'Mary Davis, Pat Adams, Alice Scales.. Florida Morris. Alice Stack, Bertha Smith. Halite Home, Anna Cbreltiberg and Bess Austin. Progressive hearts was Rlayed, and it seemed singularly appropriate that the terlde-slect should make the high est score at this game. She was pre sented with a beautiful bunch of car nations. Tea was aerved during the progress of the game. But it was not till the hostesses led the way to the dining room that any hint was given of the announcement to be made. Suspended over the. large doors opening into the dining room was a large tweddlng bell filled with rice and confetti, which Mrs. Stewart showered upon the hride-to-'be as she passed under. Mrs. .English then gave a "toatt to the bride," and Miss Cor nie Falrley played Meodlessohn's "Wedding March." The dining room was beautifully decorated In pink and white. Carnations were the flowers used. Pink and whlte rlbfcons extend ed from the chandelier to the comers of the table and on these were strung numbers of wedding tells. Wide bands of satin ribbon were laid across the table and these were painted with the initials I and S. Pink and white carnations, attached to crepe paper bags of rice, were given as favors. In these bags were a ring, a thimble and a penny. The ring fell to Miss Scales, the thimble to Mlsa Morris and the money to Miss Davis. The wedding will take place June 28 In the First Methodist church, which both the contracting parties have attended since childhood. Mlsa Lee Is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. 6. Lee and every body In Monroe knows and loves her. Mr. Stack, who Is cashier of the Bank of Union, Is a young man of fine character and attractive person ality. He has a multitude of friends who will rejoice to hear that he has won his heart's desire. Friday evening from 8: SO to 11 o'clock Mtas Sarah Whitfield delight fully entertained a number of her friends at her beautiful suburban home. The color scheme of pink was most uniquely carried out In every detail, the decorations tbeing very elaborate. Progressive forty-two was the amusement of the evening, the prize (winners being Miss Florida Mor ris. Mr. Archie Lee and Professor Wilson. Miss Whitfield was assisted In receiving by Mr. and Mrs. W. Seal, of this city, was the host at a delightful launch party and excursion to Bath, about twenty miles down I'smlfco river. The pleasure party was given in honor of Mtes Ruth Pll Eon. of North WUkeeboro. who has been a member of the faculty of tho Washington public ohooU for tho pt stetion. The pleaaure-eeekera embarked on the handsome gas boat of Mr. W. F. Harrell, which was char tered for the occa&ion. Bath enjoys the distinction of beioff the oldest town in the State and was first settled early In the seventeenth century and to full of Interesting -ellcs. Among the most Interesting places visited toy the party was an old church that waa built of brick brought over from England. The last meeting of the Thursday Book Club was ta red letter one in its annal for 1909, for the beautiful day found seventeen of Its twenty members gathered within the walls of Mrs. John Younts' hospitable home, the beauty of which had been enhanced 'by the profusion of magnificent Marechal Nell roses and lilies of the valley. The Philippines was the subject to which the member devoted their at-t-ntlon during the hour given to study, and many entertaining papers were read. Mra Q. A. Warltck read a most Interesting letter written the day before the battle of Manila. Mrs. W. H. Bverhart gave a sketch of Ma nila under the old and new regime. Mrs. J. A. Gait her spoke of the geolo gical Philippines. Mrs. C. E. Wehler told nt the islands since becoming a United States possession. Mrs. C. M. McCorkle gave an account of ten ars' work over in these Islands. Mrs. C. H. West showed the work of of President Taft wh.ll Judg In these i ew possessions. Mr. W. C. Kenyon told of the various races scattered over the many Islands. thlr customs and habits. Mrs. L. L Wetharspoon told of the ceding of this territory to the United States and Mra L. F. On Friday evening of last week the last meeting of the Athena Book Club, until next fall, was held with Miss Ella and Mr. Walter Fialey at their beautiful colonial home, Oakland. The house was prettily decorated with cut flowers, the hall, where punch was served, being In green and pink. After the usual current events and criticisms of the books, a most de lightful -musical programme was ren dered. Among those who charmed their hearers were Misses Rudislll, Rosseau, Arrowood. Mra Owyn Har per and Mr. W. Martin. Delicious refreshments were served, after which Mr. T. B. Finley. In behalf of the club, presented to Miss Arrowood, the retiring president, a handsome volume of Shakespeare and a largo bunch of carnations. A cordial welcome was accorded sach member of the club and to quite a number of visitors. There is no busi ness to record In the chronicles of th Chelldon. so after the usual preamble, the entertainment proper began, which consisted of a flower contest. The answer to esch question was the name of a flower. Mra. Percy Williams and Misses May Csrter and Hattie King proved themselves most familiar with flow ers, and succeeded in guessing the greatest number, but in cutting,. Miss Hattle King wss successful and re ceived therefor the prize, a vase. Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Mocks en tertained a large number of ladle In honor of her daughter, Mrs. Jones, of Kernersvllle. Mra Hobos entertained most de lightfully at an "al fresco" party Wednesday afternoon. In honor of her sister, Mra Jones The hostess herself seemed a part of joyous spring as she met her guests under th over arching trees, where rustic seats were scattered in profusion. An hour brimming with delight was drained, and then luxurious refreshments were dispensed. About forty ladles par took of this hospitality, and treasure memories of a gracious hostess. Th History Club met with Miss Jessie King Thursday and held an extra session of business and pleasure combined. Punch was srvd by Miss Mary Lily King behind a bower of green In the hall. Th by-law called for this annual meeting for the election of officers for the en suing year, o th hostess would not consign hr guests to unremitting la bor, but introduced a prelude, in th way of a guessing contest, which was entitled, "Burlsd Germans," and comprised the hidden names of the. illustrious 0ermo in tas past years study. Th contest was very inter esting and resulted in several tying for the prise, but In cutting, Mrs. Molr won the prize, a stenciled cen trepiece. After the refreshments, strawberry lee cream and cake, wwe served the outside visitors dispersed and business began. The result of the election of officers was: President. On entering the door, the hostess pinned a half of some flower on each guest. Miss Mattie W. McLean dis tributed littl envelopes, marked "M. G. R." in club colors, containing a poem, "The Queen o' the May." with missing words to be filled in. Miss Lillian McNalr. blng the lucky one. was asked to sit on the besutiful white throne to be crowned the Queen of May by the president. The crown was of Marechal Nell roses.
