Special to The Objerver. Winston-Salem, May 17. Inability to hit Hammersly spelled the Twins' defeat to-day, the Patriots taking the game easily 3 to 1. Hammersly pitched a splendid game and was giv en swell support at critical moments. Withers' work was good at practically every stage, but the one error -behind him cost a run and Brent's fail ure to handle McKevitt's fly to left centre was also responsible for one of the tallies. Outside of these mlsplays and an error by lynch, the game was as pretty as one could wish. In the second inning, Fogarty and Carter each stared in right and centre. Special to The Observer. Spartanburg, 8. C, May 17. Up to the fourth inning it looked as if the Spinners would have no trouble in taking the game, outfleldlng and out-' hitting the locals and playing a better game all-around, but in the third in ning, Lanham hit a home run to deep' right and started a rally. In the next lnnig, however, with the bases full and none down, Lantham again hit to deep right and scored three runs, stopping on third himself. From this time on the Spartans hit the ball and crossed the plate at will. Stouch used three pitchers to stop the hitting but each of them looked sUke. Touchstone was batted from the rubber in the sixth and Betcher, whd . played first up to this point, relieved him. The first three men to face Betcher singled and then Rlckard hit to left for three bags. Just here Stouch sent In Black- j stone who also was easy.
