Correspondence of The Observer. Sanford. June 18. Escort automo bile, a flfty-horse-power Franklin, William H. Brewers driving, arrived here at 8 o'clock from Raleigh bring ing Mayor J. Stanhope Wyne, Editor Joaephus Daniels and little son. Worth Bagley Daniels, and Col. Fred A. Olds, representing the city gov ernment, chamber of commerce and automobile club. They had a delight ful run making 42 miles In a frac tion over three hours, several stops having 1 een made, one of over an hour .t Stockville. They found most of the road excel lent, notably In Wake and Lee coun ties and along parts of the run a speed of a mile a minute was record ed. Alon gthe route hundreds of good roads leaflets were distributed and great Interest was shown. There was cheering as the party reached Stanford. Half an hour later The Her ald car arrived, Mr. Peltz In charge. Mr. Leonard Tufts, of Pinehurst. be ing with this party. The Atlanta Journal machine arrived later and the entire party spends the night here, leaving for Raleigh very early tn the morning, the Raleigh machine piloting and will be met half way by othtr machines from Raleigh. Senator Overman presented In the Senate yesterday resolutions from the tobacco board of trade, signed by F. A. Coleman, C. I. Ogburn and R. C. N'or fleet, of Winston-Salem, and the Wil son tobacco board of trade, signed by W. J. Bokin and H. P. Watson, pro testing against the passage of the "free leaf bill." which provides for the ale of natural leaf by merchants free from tax. Mr. Henty K. Thomas Shu ford, an engineer living at Swan nanoa, met with a horrible accident on the yards of the Southern Rail way to-night He was in charge of two new "dead" engines which were being taken to Colorado, and while the train was slowly moving he at tempted to go from one to the other, and missing his foot, fell under the moving wheels. The trucks passed ever his left arm, mangling it hor ribly and badly bruising him. He was removed to the Mission Hospital and hi arm amputated. He will prob ably recover. Sheriff's posses and mobs have been scouring Georgetown county for an unknown negro who, late yesterday afternoon, assaulted a young lady school teacher while out driving with a child of Mr. Huck Cain, with whom she boarded, and dragging the young lady into the wood outraged her after a brave fight by the fragile girl. The othild was told to run for its life, and in a few minutes Mr. Cain was on .he scene. The negro was gone and he found the young lady bloody and In a terrible condition A lynching is feared. Friday morning between 2 and 3 o'clock some one broke Into the office of the South ern Express Company and stole about sixteen gallons of good blind tiger whiskey. It Is quite evident that it was a very thirsty person, as nothing else was bothered. This Is the second time within the last two years that the express office has Men robbed of its liquor.
