Mr. Chatham had been partially deaf for a number of years and did not hear either the engineer's whistle, which was repeatedly Mo.vn, or the calls of the workmen engaged in the veneering mill, who saw the old man's perilous plight and shouted words of warning. When the engineer observed that Mr. Chatham did not turn his head or make anv uen of heinj; aware of his predicament, lie closed the throttle and threw on inn emergency brakes, but to no avail. He suf fered great pain at the Good Samari tan Hospital, where he was immedi ately taken, but is now doine well. His pulse is normal and his appetite good. The pain has almost left him. and though his lower limbs are paralyzed, it is thought he will recover. Bryan's spinal column was broken by the bullet and being rendered a life-long cripple, the county will care for him at the county home, north of the city. He will be removed from the hospital as soon as Iris condition will permit. i !
