New Tork, June 25 It is to a Urge ex tent a weather market in cotton, and as conditions much of the time during the week over a wide stretch of territory east of the Mlslppi river hsve been unfavorable, the sharp advance that has occurred Is not al all surprising. The market "promisee to be sensitive to an un usual degree to adverse westhsr news during the remainder of the season. The official weather reports show thst for the season from March 1 to June 21 there has I been a surplus In the rainfall as com- I pared with the normal of roughly U to 20 Inches in parts of Alabama and from 7 to 15 In portions of Mississippi. The mar ket has been flooded of lata with serious reports regarding the situation not only In these States but alto in other por tions of the cistern belt and there is a growing belli thst Ideal weather condi tions during the remainder of the sea son will be absolutely essential to the raising of anything like a normal yield. Rftports from Tsxss hsve been favorable In the main, owing lo Die fall of benefi cial rains, but reports of damage from the weevil, It Is worthy of note, are Increasing- It Is contended by the advocates of higher prices that the plant in parts of Alsbama and Georgia as well as Mis sissippi Is so badly tn the grass that con siderable areas si have to be abandoned. Meantime trade tn cotton goods con tinues to expand. The advices from Fall River are cheerful. Mills In New Kng land are twlleved ic be carrying small supplies of the r',v material. Storks In Russian and some other continental mills are said to be at a low stage Supplies of unsold cotton st the South are declar ed In many letters and dispatches lo be unusually small. General trsde contin ues to show Improvement and there can be no doubt that a large yield will be needed. Tht present outlook for the crop In every Important section leaves much to be desired. There has been a noteworthy broadening of the apecula tlon here of late. The unfavorable char acter of much of the crop news has en couraged outside public buying and strong Interests In the cotton trade prop er are committed io the bull side.
