Mr. J. H. Van Ness is chairman and Messrs. Z. T. Smith and J. F. Moa teller are the other committeemen on arrangements representing Meck lenburg Camp of Veterans, whose members from the start have been enthusiastic over the idea of playing the role of host to their one-time brethren in the midst of what Sher man is alleged to have said was not heaven. August 25 and 6 are the appointed days, these falling on Wednesday and Thursday, a parade early in the morning of the second day before the sun has attained near the merid ian, followed by a barbecue will be among the happenings Incident to the coming together. A BOSTOSTAX'S SCRPRISE. Booker Washington and Other Neffro Educators Treated Civilly in South Carolina. Macon Telegraph. The Boeton Transcript relates with manifest astonishment that during "the recent trip of Booker T. Wash ington and his party of a score of col ored lawyers, doctors, ministers, teach ers, farmers and business men through South Carolina" the members of the Maid party were everywhere treated with kindness and consideration, and that whites as well as blacks went to hear them speak. The Transcript seems to despair of convincing Its readers that not a single dark-skinned orator was lyynoheJ. for It says: "Perhaps It may seem strange that all this should occur In a State that was foremost In the movement for disunion in order to save the Institu tion of slavery, but It Is probable that the party farad much better In South Carolina than it would have done In Mississippi. Th negro to-dsy find his best friends among those who repre sent the old aristocracy of the South. Their prejudices are milder; thair ap preciation of character and service quicker, and In few States is that ele ment more In force to-dsy than in South Carolina. They realize and ap prove what Bookr Washington has done towarj the solution of their great j problem, and he has nowhere had an j evnerlenre llkelv t lve him sreater i n..r.-.mcr,t In hi. n.nrlr than In - the Palmetto State. He gained from It new faith and vigor and he left behind him Idea and impressions that were both educational and humanizing." This Is rather hard on Mississippi, for It lesvea the people of Boston to infer that that benighted State Is not only lacking In anything suggestive of an "aristocracy" a charge which its smart set would repudiate with a mighty indignation but that the us ual M'salsalppl cure for the educated and ambitious negro Is hanging. roast Ins, or bathing In boiling oil, at least, shooting on sight. Gaunekeener's Gallows. London Evening Standard. In olden days the gamekeeper tet up his vermin gallows In each of his big woods. It was to his credit to show that he had killed a large amount of vermin; on his, gallows he wrote his own testimonial. Nearly all the vermin he killed was duly displayed. Now the Jay of the gallows U pussin.?. Keepers have little time to give to the display; nor do employers always encourage it. No doubt there is a growing feeling against the destruc tion of wild life Involved by the pre servation of game; the gallows fosters this and leads to bitter. If often mis Judged, attacks. Keepers are content ing themselves with a modified form of gallows, as the trunk of a tree, to whjch the heads, tails, or claws of the malefactors are nailed. Of course a small gallows does not speak of the keeper's successful war waging In the old manner of the old fashioned, full measure pattern, but there 1 much in their favor. As one old keeper remark er of his tree trunk gallows, the faint odor was only enough to act off the scent of the flowers. Fire Destroys Oarthage Stable. Special to The Observer. Carthage, June 2 8.
