Atlanta Constitution. 1 was ruminating about the fight. It is common property and every body has the right to talk about it. Tillman did wrong iu jumping over three desks to strike Mc Laurin. About one desk was the huiit of propriety. Three desks gave a uiau time to cool and that makes it against the law to light. As to the time and place, that is of no consequence now. There was a time iu the days of Web3ter aud GalboQu and Tom Benton aud Henry Clay and when the Uulted States Senate was as; acted almost as a church but uow a large ma jot it v of its members get their places by conduct infinitely more disgraceful than fighting. Bribery and corruption have become o common that a man can't get there without usi g a big pile of money aud making lots of promises. Of course, I do not include our South er Senators, for they haven't got the money. If we had some mil lionaires "in Georgia, Glay and Bacon woild have to step down at d out. And I am not so much disgusted with Tillman for fight ing in the Senate Chamber. He had reasons to believe that his paidner bad received promises, aud 1 reckon he bad. He certain ly iMd great expectations or he would not have flopped over so suddenly. Politicians have to be paid for their votes. Tillman is a true man, but he is not a giet and good man. I ad mire him for some traits in his character. He cannot be bribed -r iutimidatf d. He dates to say what he believes, and he uses hit pitchfork with impunity. He is impetuous aud combative, but he is sincere, and everybody admires sincere man. Sincere is one of the strongest and best words in our language. It literally means unsealed without wax foriu the olden time letters were sealed with wax, but if they contained no secrets J hey were not urah-d at ail, lor wax. cost money. Tillman is a bold, defiant, stubborn mau, but he is not great. A great man like Webster or Calhoun would have said to McLauriu. "Well, sir, if 1 am a liar, I deserve the epithet. It am not, then you deserre it, but shall not stoop to give it."' I wish we were all that gieat. This thing of resenting the charge of ying with a blow is a strange per version of propriety. A man may gain bis tnds by -cheating, swindl ing, over reaching, bypocricy. or concealing the truth, but you must not call him a liar. He may break all the command ments, bur don't call him a liar, though that is not in the Deca- ogue. All that I regret about the fight is that Spooner did not call Tillman a liar and get mauled for it before McLauiin came in. I want somebody to whip Spooner. He was the teaser that brought on the fight and was delighted that it occurred between the two Caro ma Senators. With his party it is uo crime to snoot down ten thousand Filipinos who refuse to give up their country, but it shocks them awfully to have a little fracas iu the Senate Chamber. Well, there are some great men and there are many good men, but greatness aud goodness are seldom combined. Addison says it takes loth to make a man complete. Such, for example, ?s Washington and Eobt. E. Lee. Job says great men are not always wise, and he might have added most of them are mean, selfish, heartless aud ambitious. Lrd Bacon, for in stance, who took bribes while on the bench, and Cromwell and N.i poleon. Webster was a great man aud long has been my ideal of greatness. He was called the God like but sometimes bis human na tare overcdme him. Aud so with Henry Olav and Bob Toombs. The great weakness of the people is idolatry. Partisan or sectional or -religious idolatry. Every man who climbs high up where the peo pie can see him is either a saint or a sinner, according to our politics, our sect, our creed. Oue mau idol izes the character of Lincoln or Headache kills, not necessarily suddenly, but SURELY. It preys upon the intellectual powers more than we realize. It consumes the vitality faster than nature can replenish it, and we cannot tell just what moment a temporary or complete aberration of the mind will result. Headache and pain should be promptly re moved but properly. Many pain cures are more harmful than the pain. Beware. If you would be safe, take m'cv Pain Pills. "As a result of neuralgia I lost the sight of toy right eye-, and the pain I have suffered is incomprehensible, be ing obliged to take opiates almost con tinually. A friend gave me one of Dr. Miles' Pain Pills and it promptly re lieved me. I then purchased a box and now my trouble is gone. They have also cured my daughter of nervous headache, and I heartily recommend them to others." W. J. Corley. Bre mond, Texas. Sold by Druggists. 25 Doses, 25c Dr. Miles Medical Co., Elkhart, Ind. Graut, auother holds both of them in contempt. I suppose that three fourths of the Northern people pay homage to the ..memory of John Brown for what they call bis good intentious and every northern his tory and ucyciopedia apologises for him, and eveu no good a man as McKinley excused himself for not attending the reinterment of his bones, on the ground that the pressure of official duties would uot allow him to leave Washing ton. Most Northern men still de nounce John 0. Calhoun as the author of cecession and justify Sherman for burning Columbia. Here in Georgia this idolatry is already takiug shape in onr silly hurrahs for our candidate for gov. eruor. Bat, as usual, the loudest ghouters have axes to grind and are diligently layiug traps to catch the people. But this is the shady aide of politics and I wou'c ruuii nate any further about ir. If the ground was dry enough I would work some iu the garden aud uot brood over things that will soon pass away. I thought that spring had come two weeks ago, and I exclaimed, "Hail, gentle spring.'' Bat she didn't hail she only sleeted aud they say that old wiuter Is lingering in her lap the old rascal. lie ought to beasbam ed of himself. My best relief and comfort is to play with the grand ohildreu. Oar little girl of five has bad her feelings hurt, and is very indignant, at what her Cous iu Will said. She told me about it. ''Grandpa, I told Cousin Wil that when he got to be a man and I got to be a young lady, he must marry me, and what do you think he said?" "I don't know. What did he say!" "Why. he said he would see about it. Wasn't that mean? He ought to be glad to mar ry me. If he don't mind, I will marry my Cousin Kalph; aud then I reckon he wont see about it. He's mean, ain't he, grandpa?' An other cbap was saying his prayers the othur night and prayed for God to bless grandma and grand pa and Aunt Mary aud Cousin John aud several others, and then he said: "That's all, Lord. Ain't that all, papa!'' "No, you didn't pray lor your Consin Jenuy." JNo, apa, I wont pray for her, she's mean: I wish God would send a cow to butt her over." All of our little ones are going to school now. and feel their conseouence. I'm aking more interest 111 our public school than I ever did. Oar 12 year old, who lives with us, is ab sorbed iu her studies and loves her ooksaud her teacher, and is proud wheu she gets marked perfect or awiy up in the uiueties. Of course I help her with her sum every night, for some of them are very hard, aud sorter strain my old iniud. Theie are fifty-three pupils in her grade (the sixth,) and ye. terday forty six of them had the sums done correctly, aud when the teacher asked those who had no help to hold oheir bands up; not a hand was held up. They all had help. That makes forty seven teachers for one grade, aud I am pleased to be oue of tl eai. I wish that ths school teachers of these children could realize how much influence they have over their pu pils. The teacher can make the school life of a pt:p 1 ph asant or miserable, aud 1 am glad to be n a lr a 11 r 1 f V W it J I VII till 1 IB II Dyspepsia Cure Digests what you eat. The days of old Isham are past. Tbe old man was a stern and rig.d disciplinarian. He wore clippers iu the school room, aud sometimes would slip up behind a boy who wa making horses or dogs on his slate aud would suddenly mash the boy's face down on the slate and rub the picture ont with his uose. He used to have fights with the big boys, and loved to maul obedience into their rebellious souls. And there was Beman a"d Judge War ner aud my father, and WTm. H. Set ward, all yalikees, who had to sub due the big boys by hard fighting, and if a teacher couldn't whip a boj and subdue him he was turned off a incompetent. My opinion is that I got most too much whippiDg when I was a school boy. I still remember how John Norton whipped me on a bod and bursted it, and I ran home yelling and my mother cried as she doctored it up and my father made me go back. But John Norton was a good teacher, and be had a hard time with Jim Wilson and Jim Graig and Jim Wardlaw aud my brother Jim and Jim Alexander, the doc tor who died last fall in Atlauta, and several other Jims. I never knew a boy named Jim who wasn't devilish at school. Verily, there is something iu a uame, and now Jim Smith is going to run for gov ernor. Better uot tell a lie on him, he would jump over forty desks to whip a man. Bill ARP. LA GRIPPE QUICKLY CUBED.
