More rains and freshets every
week! Monday night's rain was
terrific. Farmers sav it washed
their lauds more than any this-
year. The creeks are kept out o
banks half the time. This ia just
such an April as we had two
years ago. That year we had
freshet after freshet throughout
April and May, culminating in
the record breaker about May
20th that did a million dollars
damage to the bottom lands on
the Catawba river in Catawba,
Burke, McDowell and Mecklen
burg counties.
The wheat crop, which a month
ago was so promising all over
Catawba countv, has within the
ast two weeks received a most
decided set-back. Exactlv what
the trouble is, farmers are not
agreed. Some say the w-heat is
ull of flies which are sucking the
ife out of it. Others say it was
lam aged by the cold weather of
week before last, and others
think the rust is hurting it. It
is probable that all these have
something to do with the deter
ioration in the trrowinsr ci-od
