These are as near the facts as we are able to get at this writing It is reported to-night that the Wm. Ritter Lumber Co. has bought all of Mr. George R. Watkins' lands westofLin ville river and will begin cut ting timber to-morrow. Not withstanding the very cold weather, they are logging and running their mill regularly. Editor: Tlease give us space in The News Herald for a few items from this section of the county. Beginning with the village, or Mttle town, of Table Rock, N. C. This village is situated about ten miles north of Morganton on the Table Rock road. It is sur rounded with grand mountain -euery and is 1268 feet above .- mv"I. Asa health resort it s'irpnssed. The village has t.vo stores and a post-office The mail conies thrice a week. The merchants of this town have ;een kept busy for the last two or three. weeks; Christmas is ap- oaehing. The public school at this plae is eing taught by Mr. Kobt. Harbison and Miss Maud Patton. They report a very large school, about senventy pupils out of one hundred are enrolled. Photographer Kamseur made a picture of the school one day last week Shouldn t wonder at some of the boys keeping their iiats on their heads. The last mail brought gladness to the hearts of some of ourgood old neighbors. How's that? A (tension. Marvin Williams, an employee at Knox's saw mill, was serious ly hurt in the fore arm last week. In reaching across the saw, greasing some part of the ma chinery, his arm came in contact vith it, injuring the bones. The i-m will no doubt be taken off. In scanning the notes from Quaker Meadows in the last is sue of The News-Herald, we in tic d there had been chicken rogues. No doubt they are the xame ones who took our chickens and turkeys. We sire glad to note that Mr. G. W Thomason, who has been to Statesville Hospital for treat ment of a defect on the jaw bone, ls ""P!"11 Mr. Collet t McGimsey, who has been .attending a business college in Georgia, is at home to spend Xmas. Miss Nana Beck, of Richmond. Va., who lias been there for some years, is at home to spend Xmas. The Methodist parsonage of this place, now orned by Mr. T. C. Fleming, is occupied by Mr. J. C. Perkins, whose former home was near Connelly Springs, N. C. Mr. Hamp Beck, of Washing ton, D. C, is at home to spend the holidays. 1 arming in our community is not as progressive as it once was; manufacturing is taking its place. Some people talk to hear them selves, others are millionaires in their dreams, and worth noth ing much after all; lew are "Smart Alecks , and they know ieSs than any body else." Some are fools and don't know it. What is the use to agree with a person when thev are wrong. ana they know that they are wrong, and won't admit it. It is absutdity. Scribo. Table Rock, N. It will be good news to the mothers of small children to learn that croup can be pre vented. The first sign ot croup is hoarseness. A day or two before the attack the child becomes hoarse. This is soon followed by a peculiar rough cough. Give Chamberlain's Cough Remedy freely as soon as the child becomes hoarse, or even after the rough cough ap pears, and it will dispel all symptoms of croup. In this way all danger and anxiety may be avoided. This remedy is used by many thousands of mothers and has never been known to fail. It is, in fact, the onlv remedy that can al ways be depended upon and that is pleasant and sate to take. D or sale by W. A. Lies lie, druggist. ORIGIN OF XMAS GREENS. They Were Used nt Chrlstmastide Five Centuries Ago The use of evergreens at Christmas time is older than the Christmas tree, the Christians seeming to have copied It from their pagan ancestors. In a very old book we find this reference to the use of evergreens at Christmas time: "Against the feast of Christmas every man's house, as also their parish churches, were decked with holme, Ivie. bayes and whatsoever the season of the year afforded to be green. The conduits and standards of the streets were likewise earnished, among the which I read that in the year 1414, by " X" I V .u ; roi.m,. ward the morning of Candlemas day. at the Leadenhall, in Cornhill, a stand ard of tree, being set up in the midst of the pavement, fast in the ground. nailed full of holme ,nd ivie, for dis port of Christmas to the people, was torn up and cast down by the malig nant spirit, as was thought, and the stones of the pavement all about were cast In tbe streets and into divers bouses, so that the people were sore aghast at the great tempest" Leslie's Weekly.
