This weather is putting an end to the Hessian Fly, so say the farmers. Mr. Sumraey Wilfong of Jacob's Fork, is the champion on big hogs this year. He has re cently killed three hogs that made him 1400 pounds of pork. The largest of the three we'ghed 600. White, cashier of the First National Bank, was elected Vice- President of the new bank that was recently organized at Henderson v ille. J. E. Neal has resigned hi position wi;h Bennett & Morgan and has returned to the U. S. mail service. His run is between Washington and Greensboro. Representative Bowman, of Mitchell county, presented a pe tition the other day to the Legis lature signed dy 100 men and 100 women asking for the prohi bition of the sale of liquor in Marion. The petition came from the uppr prt of this county, and was gottuu up by our old friend D. M. Washburn, who is a warm advocate of the temperance cause. CLEVELAND. She.by Star, Feb. 8th. After several months of ill health Mrs. Dicy Alexander diVd Fridav at her home near Waco, of pneumonia. She was Miss Dicy Elliott, the daughter of Mr. Robt. Elliott, and twenty-nine years ago, married Mr. David Alexander, a union which has been happy and practically with out sorrow till the carrying off of Mrs. Alexander. Besides a devoted husband she leaves to grieve over her departure four children, two pons and two daughters. Mr. Alexander was 59 years old, having lived a life r f love, service and devation to duty. Mr. W. W. Hartgrove died at his home in Mt. Hollv Thursday. occasionally given hini trouble ever since. Cleveland county has another boy at the D. & D. School at Morganton. He is Welley F. Jolley, of Boiling Springs, and an exceedingly bright and in dustrious young fellow. When at home he works in the roller mill and is always busy, and anxious to get an education. He is at a good school and we are sure he w 11 make rapid progress in his studies. The sleigh bells jingled merrily around Shelby for a few hours Monday. Our old friend. Uncle Lot Estes, of Globe, had a fall a few days since and is in a critical condition. He is near 92 years old and is not expect ed to get cut again. Miss Annie Miller was right badly stunned and bruised by a slump of snow and ice falling on her yester day. She was walking along near Dul is shop when the ice sild from the top of the build ingknockingherdown. Sheriff Smith and others went to her assistance and she was taken home in a buggy. Mr. W. M. We regret to chronicle the death of Mrs. Margaret Martin, wife of our townsman, Mr. J. E. Martin. Mrs. Martin was in her fiftieth year. She died of pneu monia Saturday evening, Feb. 4th. The news of her death was with the disease. On last Friday morning two white men, Holman and Mere- deth by name, went to the home of an aged, afflicted. harmless and respected :negro man at Holman's ford and af ter demolishing his furniture, turned upon the poor old ne-. gro and clubbed him into in sensibility, leaving him for dead. The brutes in human form made good their escape and up to this time have not been arrested. The old ne- turn to the point form which it started. And the sadest feature of the encounter was that the old dis tiller had aimed well, and that one of his bullets had caused the death of one of the men who was seeking his capture. Since that day there has been no combined attack on the "Mon arch of the Island" that stands out in the center of the Pee Dee.
