The cool nights and bracing days of late are indeed exhilarat ing, but the lengthening shad ows, the chirp of the katy-dids and the varied hues of the foli age, remind us in unmistakable language that summer has passed and autumn is upon us. East Boone is now quite a busy place. Carpenters are press ing the work on the new dormi tory; the plasterers are at work on the large brick Training School duilding; J. B. McNeil is framing his large residence near the campus; the neat little home of Mrs. Toppings isbeingerected, and many other improvements are going on. Mr. Nathan Horton, of Beaver Creek, Wilkes county, a spright ly lad of only eighty summers, and Miss Amanda Dula, a win some lassie of only sixty-seven years, were happily married at the home of the bride on last Sunday, after a courtship of a little less than a fourth of a cen tury. To readers in other sec tions it might be surprising to know the amount of monazif mined in Cleveland and Ruther ford counties. One merchant, Mr. R. E. Campbell, near Camp Call, has bought over $800 worth within the last week, and the back counties are yet to be heard from. Fifteen years ago the land around Casar and Car penter's Knob, was rated at about $2 an acre and nobody buying much at that. Now some of it is sold tor G00 per acre for the mineral wealth it contains. Near Ellenboro, Rutherford county, almost fa bul )us prices have been paid for land, and the supply of sand seems lnexnaustiDie. wnen u A. Gettvs, a poor public school teacher, first began to had sand and develop the mines, no one dreamed that the bu iness would ever ussume such propor tions. He represented the els- back Company, of Philadelphia, and realized thousands of drl lars bv close application to busi ness. Later, competition came into the field, and now several companies are represented. In stead of merely following the bed of the branch, the whole surrounding low country is mined and is rich. As the tim ber has been pretty well used up, the mines and farms are the fu ture hope. The Better Way The tissues of the throat are inflamed and irritated; you cough, and there is more irrita tion more coughing. You take a cough mixture and'it eases the irritation for a while. You take COTTS EMULSION md it cures the cold. That's a hat is necessary. It soothes the throat because it reduces the irritation ; cures the cold because .t drives out the inflammation; builds up the weakened tissues oecause it nourishes them back to their natural strength. That's how Scott's Emulsion deals with a sore throat, a cough,' a cold, or bronchitis. WE'LL SEND YOU A SAMPLE FREE. On Monday evening last the Southern surveying corps head ed by Captain Carter landed at Rutherfordton and are now making a preliminary survey from this place to Spartanburg, S. C, down Gleghorn creek, and by way of Poors Ford. This seems to be a competative move upon the part of the Southern to counteract that of the South & Western. Whether the South ern really means to build a com peting line against the South & Western, or is simply making this survey as a bluff, the Sun is unable to say, but one thing is sure, tlutnertord county win soon have another line across its territorj-, and possibly two, if theiSouthern is acting in good aith.
