Newton Man's Remain Taken to Mc Dowell County Monday for Burial. Statesville Landmark. 15th. The remains of Mr. J. W. Cowan, of Newton, who was mortally wounded by a negro near Mid viile, Ga., last Wednes day and died in an Augusta hos pital Saturday night at 12 o'clock, passed through Statesville yes terday morning en route to Mc Dowell county, where the inter ment takes place to-day. The remains were accompanied by Mrs. Cowan, wife of the de- J. S. Cowan, of a brother, and Robinson and Jas. T. Compton, of Charlotte. Mrs. Cowan was called to Georgia soon after the shooting occurred ceased, Mr. Waynesville, Messrs. C. H. and was with her husband when the end came, and Mr. Cowan, of Waynesville, and friends from Charlotte arrived in Augusta shortly after his death. Mr. Cowan was a traveling representative of C. H. Robinson & Co., of Charlotte, and was at Midville collecting for the firm when he was shot in the face with a shotgun by a negro. His relatives have no particulars of the tragedy but it is assumed that Mr. Cowan had called on the negro to collect some money when the shooting occurred. When the party accompanying the remains left Augusta Sunday they were assured that every ef fort would be made to capture the murderer; that a posse was hot on his trail at the time. Mr. Cowan leaves a wife and four children. Organization of the Second Baptist Crurch cf Morganton. Hexamethyl enetetramine is recognized by medical text books and authorities as a uric acid solvent and anti-septic for the urine. Take Foley's Kidney Remedy promptly at the first sign of kidney trouble and avoid a serious malady. W. A. Leslie. Preventive Treatment for Ott and Wheat Smut. Bulletin 212 of the North Car olina Agricultural Experiment Station by Dr. F. L. Stevens, which has just appeared from the press, gives full directions for preventing the various smuts of oats and wheat. These are due to little living parasitic plants which grow within the wheat and oat plants. They cause large loss, cutting down the yield of grain often as mu'h as 20 per cent, or even 30 per cent, while the stinking smut of wheat does much greater damage by injur ing the milling quality of the grain. The formalin treatment, which is thoroughly effective and costs almost nothing, is described and recommended for oat smut. The same treatment is even more effective than the ordinary blue stone treatment for the stinking smut in wheat. The loose smut of wheat can be prevented by a modified hot water treatment coupled with separate growth of seed in a protected seed plat. Director C. B Williams, West Raleigh, N. C, states that those Mr. Otto Paul, Milwaukee. Wis., says Foley's Hony an-1 Tar is still more than the best. He writes us: "All those that bought it think 't is the best for coughs and colds they ever had and I think it is still more than the beat Our baby had a bad cold and it cured him in oie day. In strange contrast to the noisy atmosphere which was wont to pervade Sagamore Hill is the al most impenetrable silence which has fallen over the mansion since Tuesday's cyclone. Those who know Mr. Roosevelt (and who doesn't?) would have de clared that he would be the last man nn earth to take defeat so seriously as to shut himself up in ssclusion and "weep in silence jmrl nlnnp" It is so unlike the man that even the "pert para sraDhers" have paused in the manipulation of their artillery to loum Whprhpr or not some dire maladv has seized the Mighty Hunter. The New York World suggests that the Silent One is commun ing with the spirits of the dead t savs: "Three days have passed and a silence like that of the tomb stil broods over Sagamore Hill. The lips upon which hung the faith ful in rapt adoration are mute. Not a sound is heard, not a fun- pral note. In his seclusion has he sought comfort in the melan choly measure of Gray's 'Elegy in a Country Churchyard; Mo one knows. No one can tell. No human being has penetrated the great silence. Thanksgiving Day Orphan's Day. The work of the orphanages of North Carolina appeals most strongly to reason and to sym pathy. These institutions are worthy of the heartiest support of our people and they have a large place in thair interest and gifts and efforts. At the Thanksgiving season minds and hearts turn especially toward our orphanages and many are the practical expressions of gratitude made to this cause by a people richly blessed. These love-prompted gifts to carry on this blessed work with these little ones surely must be acceptable to God, the Father of the fatherless. It seems that, here in North Carolina, Thanksgiving Day ha3 been specially set apart as "Or phan's Day" and we rejoice that this is true. The contributions made at, this season help very of much indeed in the support our various orphanages. We trust that even larger of ferings will be made at this Thanksgiving season than ever before to the end that these in stitutions may be the better able to perform their service. They need funds fcr maintenance, for improvement 2nd for the exten sion of the work. CHEAP IM TATIONS. A Statesville man who takes much interest in public affairs noted with interest that the first Socialist ever elected to Congress was elected from Milwaukee last week. He was remarking it to a friend when the latter, having in mind the thing that made Milwaukee famous, said that he always connect :d Socialists with beer, that they seemed to flourish most where beer was most plen tiful, and asked the first speaker if the fact that beer and Social ism seemed to go together was not an argument for prohibition. "No," was the decisive an swer; "it's an argument for the universal distribution of beer." According to this, Morganton must be opposed to beer. As a curiosity these figures may attract you for a minute, but the most curious thing about them is that three quarters of this money is regularly sent away from the South and the South is that much poorer for it. You trade at a Southern shoe store. You give the dealer your money. You probably buy a western or northern made shoe. When the dealer pays his bill, this money, less a small per cent to the dealer, goes north or west and the South is that much poorer. Keep your money at home. Let it work for better times, better wages, more factories, more work for Southern people. Ask your dealer for The Craddock Shoe. Made in the South, by white labor, for Southern gentlemen. The best shoe value . of fered by any maker in the land for $3.50 and $4.00. Money spent for Craddock Shoes stays in the South, and pays Southern labor, Southern grocers, bakers and butchers.
