INTERESTION SAVINGS FIRST NATBONALQBANK MORGANTON, N. C Resources Over $600,000.00 . HALF T Carranza Takes Responsibility For Attack at Carrizal At tack as Act of War. Washington Dispatch, 25th. A demand for the immediate re lease of the American troopers taken prisoner at Carrizal, coupled with a stern notification that the United States expects an early statement of the purposes of the Carranza gov ernment, was telegraphed to Mexico City today by Secretary Lansing. The note discloses that the State department received yesterday a com munication from the de facto govern ment stating that the Carrizal fight was the direct result of orders to at tack American soldiers moving other wise than toward the border personal ly issued by General Carranza to Gen eral Trevino and by the latter com municated to General Pershing.. AVants Definite Statement. In reply Secretary Lansing requires that the de facto government trans mit a definite statement "as to the course of action t has determined upon" through the usual diplomatic channels "and not through subordi nate military officers." The Mexican communication is con strued, Secretary Lansing states, "as a formal avowal of deliberate hostile action against the forces of the Uni ted States now in Mexico and of the purpose to attack without provoca tion whenever they move from their present position despite the friendly mission on which they are ngeged and which is reaffirmed in the American rejoinder." General Carranza is required to place himself on record formally and the plain intimation lies behind the restrained language of Mr. Lansing's communication that force will be met with force. Apparently, however, the Washington government is determ ined that the de facto government shall not evade responsibility before the world if war is forced upon the United States. The A. & M. College. The demand for young North Car olinans whose education and training qualify them to take responsible places in the State's advancing de velopment in agriculture, manufactur ing, and other productive enterprises, grows apace. Of the ninety young men who were recently graduated from the Agricultural and Mechanical College, practically all had positions waiting for them on" the day of their graduation. These young men are taking their places not merely as lead ers in the State's material growth, but in its solid progressive citizenshiD as well. . The announcement of this great technical institution appears in this issue. ENDORSED AT HOME. DELIVtefcY CARS)) Mode! Statesville Landmark. Reporting the debate, in the South ern Presbyterian General Assembly, on the privileges to be accorded the women in the churches., the Presby terian Standard says: Dr. G. A. Blackburn of Columbia, S. C, made, to our mind, one of the strongest speeches of the debate. Owing to the fact that he was limited to ten minutes, he was unable to de velop his argument, and was conse quently misunderstood; but the prin ciple he laid down was Scriptural. Ac cording to him, God chose man as His representative, and Satan chose wo man as his, and now in this question thus sprung upon the church, Satan is trying to push woman to the front, and reverse God's order as laid down in His word." Well, now, what are the sisters go ing to say to that? They are the devil's representatives chosen by Sa tan himself and any attempt to put them on equality with man in the fehurches is a scheme of the Evil One. The Landmark isn't undertaking to contend about this question, which seems to have put some of the Pres byterian folks in deep water it is simply printing some information about it. But it is constrained to remark that, in the matter of repre sentatives of God and the devil, if one could make an examination could see into the inner consciousness he would find more of the "lords of cre ation representing old Satan openly or secretly, than the Daughters of Eve; for we believe it will be admitted that as a whole the women are better than the men. Such Proof as This Should Con vince any Morganton Citizen. The public endorsement of a local citizen is the best proof that can be produced. None better, none stronger can be had. When a man comes for ward and testifies to his fellow-citi zens, addresses his friends and neigh bors, you may be sure he is thorough ly convinced or he would not do so. Telling one's experience when it is for the public good is an act of kindness that should be appreciated. The fol lowing statement given by a resident of Morganton adds one more to the many cases of Home Endorsement which are being published about Doan's Kidney Pills. Read it: R. J. Hallyburton, deputy sheriff, Lenoir St., Morganton, says: "I had an attack of kidney and bladder trou bles, caused by heavy lifting and a strain. I suffered from pains trrough my body. Several of my friends had been helped by Doan's Kidney Pills and I got some at the Burke Drug Co. They quickly eased the pain and be fore long removed it entirely." Price 50c, at all dealers.
