CENTENARY ENDORSED BY CABINET MEMBERS Secretaries of Navy and Treasury Congratulate the Methodist Centenary On Its Patriotic Spirit. Hon. Carter Glass, Secretary of the Treasury, and Hon. Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, have put their stamp of approval on the Centenary of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, in telegrams just received at the offices in Nashville. The fact that OS - .ovweiv sv, nv -? V" 0 ,5 - HON. Both Secretary of the rTeasury Glass and Secretary of the Navy Dan iels are members of the Methodist church, South, and enthusiastic over the good will be given the world by the expenditure of the millions to be collected by the church in its cam paign which will follow the liberty loan. The following was received from Secretary Daniels. Washington, D. C, W. B. Beauchamp, Director General, Campaign of Centenary of Methodist Church, Nashville, Tenn. Snuggled at the foot of forest cov ered mountains, six miles out of Asheville, on a paved road, Uncle Sam has built the great General Hos pilta, No. 19, to take care of his gass ed and tubercular soldiers and help them fight and win back the health lost in our army on the battlefields in France and in oru camps in Amer ica. "OTEEN," an Indian word, meaning "chief aim" is the new name given the post in place of Azalea, and the chief aim of those at the head of this great hospital is to aid in the restoration to health of the 1,500 sol diers, the largest group of tubercu lar patients assembled anywhere, and they are succeeding so well that men are being turned out every month, won back to vigorous health. The sight of these men leaving for home, well and strong, fills the boys who remain with both yearning and hope. Kenilworth Hospital, No. 12, is sit uated in Asheville, and is for the wounded and surgical cases, and of fers the same golden opportunity for service to our brave boys because of their sacrifice for human freedom. Picture to yourself these 1,500 or more soldiers, from every State in the Union, sick or wounded, many of them brought from overseas, hun dreds or maybe thousands of miles from home and friends, weak and of ten desperately home-sick, and you can see that they need yes, urgent ly need, a personal kindness. So, you can imagine how gladly the Baracas and Philatheas and their friends of North Carolina have undertaken to give these sick boys flowers and thus express our heartiest and sincerest love, sympathy and thanks to them for what they have done for us and the cause of freedom. They "say with flowers" what they could not otherwise say, for flowers speak and speak delicately and gently but with mighty force; words that can not be spoken and that seems commonplace when written, are impressively spok en with flowers. These blooms carry the love, good cheer and sympathy our young people would gladly bring in person if they could. And there isn't a man in the ward who does not brighten up when a group of pretty and attractive Phila theas pass smilingly down the lane between the rows of white beds with their great baskets heaped with flow ers. Each bedside table has its vase, supplied by North Carolina Baracas, Philatheas and friends, and all are filled with flowers. Here and there, where a boy is too ill to notice the flowers by his bedside, a fragrant bloom is dropped on his pillow, where he can enjoy the perfume. For those who are getting better, a big bouquet is placed on the table in the end of the ward or in the Red Cross room, and when our Philatheas and friends have given all the pa tients a word of greeting and good cheer along with vthe flowers, they leave, followed by "Good-bye," "Come again, soon," "Thank you so much," and other expressions of apprecia tion. If there be anyone in the world who thinks it is a waste of time and effort to take flowers to the sick and wounded boys of our fighting forces, if there are those who says that "boys do not care for flowers and think it is sissy to have them around," that person should go out just one time with the Baraca and Philathea flow er committee. In fact, Col. Henry W. Hoagland, commander in charge of Oteen, stat ed that flowers were a great aid to the efforts of the hospital physicians and nurses in their work of bringing back the men to normal health and strength. Just as often as possible flowers will be taken to the wards and placed in the little vases by the bedside of each patient, the gift of Baracas and Philatheas and friends who "say it with flowers," and as one soldier said, "Flowers remind us that God still smiles." Money is needed to buy flowers and vases NOW for this genuinely wholesome, helpful, Christian ser vice. Any amounts sent by class es or friends can be sent to Mrs. N. Buckner, General Secretary North Carolina Baraca and Philathea Union 30 Ravenscroft Road, Asheville, N. C, will be acknowledged and quickly translated into flowers at the bed side of these sick heroes. The Standard Does Work That Will Stand. Standard Motor Company. ROADSIDE TREES AS MEMORIALS TO HEROES Recommended As a Proper and Practical Memorial to Our Fallen Soldiers. Within the next few years many hundreds of miles of hard surfaced roads will be built in North Carolina. Are they going to be simpiy a means of getting from one place to anoth er, or will they themselves be made attractive for the tourist and travel ler, and real pleasure resorts for our own people. This will depend to a large extent upon the use which is made of the clause in the new high way law providing for roadside trees. Section twelve of the State-wide road law provides for the cooperation of the State highway commission and the State forester with "the county, township or district road authorities jn the proper selection, planting and proecting of roadside trees, and the State highway commission is hereby empowered to make all necessary rules and regulations for the protec tion of the State highways and the roadside trees herein provided for." Roadside trees which are such striking and attractive features of the landscape in Europe and which have been widely planted and pro tected throughout the more northern States are only now becoming gen erally appreciated in the South, be cause we are just beginning the con struction of hard surfaced roads. Road engineers agree that while di rect sunshine is an advantage to earth roads, shade benefits macadam, concrete and other hard surfaced roads, presenting their drying out and crumbling into dust. Shade trees should therefore be planted or re served along such roads as the pro posed through highway from New Bern to Greensboro and other simi lar stretches. According to the new law, the rights of way of State highways are to be furnished by the county, town ship or road district free of charge. It is therefore up to them to secure rights of way of sufficient width for all possible purposes, including a row of trees on each side. It may be that the trees are not yet wanted. They will be some time, however; and, in securing the rights of way this should be provided for. No right of way for a State highway should be less than forty feet wide, which is the mini mum width provided by the road law of 1917, and where the traffic is likely to be heavy fifty or sixty feet would be better. Where an electric trolley line is likely to be built along the road, a number of feet should be added to include it. A highway of ficial writing in "The American City" advocates eighty to ninety feet in such cases. The plan of planting memorial trees, avenues or parks, which has been adopted by organizations all over the country cannot be too strong ly recommended. The Lincoln High way is a model for us to follow. Why not have a Liberty highway leading out of or through each of our county towns, overhung with magnificent oak-4, e;ach one named for a m?.n in the county who has made the supreme sacrifice for liberty, or who has gone forward, offering all, though later re turning in safety to receive the love and respesct of those who stayed at home? WHO BEGAN THE WAR? A WOMAN, OF COURSE! The New York War Community service sent out the following with this note: "This may add to the gay ety of nations:" It was a woman who caused the great war, and the secret was dis closed at the Hayward Unit of the New York War Camp Community service, where two members of the "Old Fifteenth" got into an argu ment about the causes of the con flict. "Doan' you know who started dis here war?" one asked. Shuah: I reckon the Kaiser did," answered the other. "Kaiser," retorted the first in scorn. How's This?
