COUNTY NEW HARNE THE PUBLIC WELFARE IS THE INTEREST OF THE WHOLE PEOPLE Vol. 3 No. 26 5c PER COPY $1.50 PER YEAR Lillington, N. C, Thursday, June 30, 1921 'If it Cooccro Harnett, h'a fa THE NEWS' TRUST CO. IN ITS NEW QUARTERS WHILE GROWERS GO BROKE THE COMPANIES PROSPER The Harnett County Trust Com nanv moved Tuesday into its new quarters in the big hotel building. The bank occupies the corner and has entrance from both streets, the main door leading to the banking quarters. the other to the directors' room. j New furniture and fixtures were bought especially for the new quar ters of the bank, the fixtures being don in marble and mahogany finish. The big plate glass windows on. each side afford- ample light, and with the substantial furnishings and ample space, the bank's new home would reflect credit upon a financial insti tution boasting residence in a me tropolis. Thus are Lillington's banking fa cilities broadening out. The old and substantial Bank of Lililngton just across the 'public square from the hotel, under the leadership of H. T. Spears, has by its sound business principles built up a strong business and enjoys a clientele numbering citizens from all sections of the county. It is the oldest bank in Harnett county. The Harnett County Trust Com pany, under the leadership of B. P. Gentry, has come forward in the past year, won credit and gained prestige in financial circles through sheer honesty of purpose in . straightfor ward business-building. The collapse of several speculative stock-selling schemes found the Trust Company, like a great many other banks in this section, burdened with undesira ble securities. President Gentry set to work to. move this questionable paper from the bank's vault. He has been rewarded for his earnest and efficient labor by seeing the bank move into its new quarters unen cumbered by oil, fish or power "C of D.'s" or other form of long-time DaDer bearing signatures of keen promoters. So successful were Mr. Gentry's efforts that strong banks elsewhere took cognizance of the accomplish ment, and when Harnett county re cently wished to negotiate a loan for the State Highway Commission to build the Lafayette Highway, the Harnett County-Trust Company per fected the plans and now has on de Dosit $100,000 for the immediate construction of the road. 4 With two good banks, and other things moving forward in line of de velopment, Lililngton's business is destined to take on new life in the near future. This may come about soon even despite a certain dronish ness among some people on account of the so-called "hard times." Facts, Says Dr. Joyner, Should Con vince of Need of Cooperative Marketing. KU KLUX TO MEET AT GREENSBORO . , - v., of North Carolina will b hel members of the Knights of the Ku t.i w , xrh r.,Aini Wrlghtsvllle Bfach. N. C-. July How growers of bright leaf to bacco are making fortunes for others while, unorganized, they themselyes struggle with poverty, is brought out by Dr. J. Y. Joyner. president of the N. C. Tobacco Growers Association, in commenting on published reports showing the earnings of manufactur ers and the high levels at which stocks of the large companies are be ing sold. Sunimarizing statements from "To bacco" and the "Wall sireei jour nal," Dr. Joyner says these facts show: 1. That the tobacco manufactur ing companies have been the "most stable earners in the last ten years, are still making millions out of to bacco, declaring enormous annual dividends, 75-170 per cent, their stocks leading the market, selling far above par, continuing "to creep upward," and "it is said the end is not yet." 2. That "low priced tobacco has averaged inventories down and at the same time companies have gone through 18 months of good business without any reduction of prices for finished product." 3. That "cigarette manufacturers have been accumulating cash rapid ly and with decline in leaf, period of large working capital requirements has passed. 4. That leaf is principal item in production costs, representing ap proximately 70 per cent of total, and decrease in cost of leaf has resulted in corresponding increase in profits. In striking and tragic contrast with the amazing prosperity and profit of these largest buyers and manufacturers. of bright tobacco, as revealed in this authentic report, is the condition of the growers of this bright tobacco who produced it when costs of production were St the peak o fhigh prices, sold it in three or fur mnths on glutted markets under financial distress and at constantly declining prices, scarcely averaging half the cost of production, leaving them disheartened and many of them bankrupt. This bright tobacco, sold by the grower at half the cost of production and one-third the price of the pre vious year, constitutes 70 per cent of the total production cost of the manufactured tobacco that the man ufacturers sold without any reduc tion of prices of the finished product. No definite figures concerning the price to b paid by the company have been made public. It Is under stood, however, that the company Is to pay slightly more than I4S.O0 for the equipment and franchise. The Carolina company has been for several months trying to get franchise here. The onty obstacle In lis way was a proposal made by John R. McQueen, who owns a power site on Lower Utile River, to supply wholesale hydro-electric current to the town at a rate much below lu present cost to the town. When this proposal was made the Carolina com pany offered to purchase the plant for $15,000. With the exception of the price offered this proposal was satisfactory to the commissioners- Gilbert C. White, civil engineer, waa then called In to make a survey of the plant and estimate lis value. A counter proposal, embodying Mr. While's estimate of the plant's value, was made to the company and was accepted in last night's meeting.
