Considerable comment has been passed upon last week's issue of this paper. It was read though possi bly some think it was red and we knew it would be read. But, for that matter, people generally give The News -the once-over, anyway, and if there should happen once in a while a "consuming" article, that will help all the more to impress the thought that a county paper cannot hold the attention of all the people with, say, Sunday school lessons. One prominent citizen facetiously remarked to us upon one occasion that we should print a "funny paper" every day while times were dull. But even that worthy takes the paper seriously sometimes. Much oblige, contemporaries, for your honorable mention of Harnett's great Community Sing. Whenever your folks sing, let us know. WHERE IS COTTON GOING TO? "Where is cotton going to?" you ask. The aid law of supply and de mand will decide. The present pros pect is for about half of the 1920 production which a year ago had a condition of but 67.5 per cent pros pect. In asking the farmer "where is cotton going to?" he thinks-of the .production and per acre return, which will average the lowest in many years or in history, for at 20 cents per pound it will average but $25 an acre based on the 127 pound present prospect. The question to the business man erroneously means that the farmers have a brighter out look for paying their heavy debts. I During the past' month,' the cotton forecast declined 1,166,000 bales or 15.4 per cent in condition making the present crop forecast only 7,537,000 bales. The further decline in North Carolina alone would reduce that figure to below the seven million mark. Think of a national crop av erage of but 49.3 per cent condition. No wonder the speculators made a "ki;iing" on the first of the month. For with their privately estimates, the result of the govern ment report was inevitable. These careful traders bought heavily and cashed in on the advance. - - I , The North Carolina cotton crop prospect shows an unusual history, loo.
