The query has been propounded time over and again: ''Why does it take so much money to run the county's schools?" The question is asked in serious mind, probably, by a great many persons, while in other' cases it is merely a complaint against taxes. ' From whatever motive, however, the question comes, there is this situ ation: Taxes for school purposes in Harnett county are being raised very materially this year (from 21 cents in 1920 to 50 cents in 1921), .and the taxpayer will naturally want to know whether a dollar's - worth of "schooling" is being given for every dollar taxed. Let's see: There are 62 white schools in this county, and 38 col ored; there are 171 wfiite teachers and 59 colored almost three teach ers for every white school .and nearly two for each colored school. How j many citizens knew the county had that many schools and teachers? The State school law allows one teacher to every 30 pupils and an additional teacher for each addition al 30 or fraction thereof. At Rock Hill school in the extreme south western section of the county there are 6 pupils in average attendance. Thus a teacher js required for -only one-fifth of the number allotted a teacher. There is probably no school in the county where a teacher is handling 30 pupils, or at least this is rarely the case. The farthest distance between two given schools is only eight miles in the sparsely settled regions. On the other hand there are some schools only iy2 miles apart.. Now, then, what's the answer? Is there any wonder that the county's school system is costly? And, too, is it not logical to suppose that the county pays dearly for what it re ceives from qne-room school houses iy2 miles apart? The educational army and its equipment is too widely scattered. We understand that consolidation of schools in Harnett county is not at all a popular idea. But neither is any progressive idea, at first blush, for that matter. The school system needs better "hitching up." Not until this is done can taxpayers expect to see tax levies lowered instead of raised. The matter of special tax levies is another phase of the school problem .which tends to aggravate. But more will be said along this line later. business. i Mr. P. C. Lindley of Greensboro and two inspectors of Washington. D. C, are here inspecting trees at the J. Van Lindley Nursery. Our heartiest congratulations and best of good wishes to the Raleigh Times, which celebrated its fortv- eighth birthday last Wednesday by entering its handsome new building, issuing a mammoth special edition, and extendng a house-warming re ception to its hosts of friends. The memory of this writer goes back twenty-five -years and more when he was on the payroll of The Times as "devil." Tom Pence was the editor, and a prince of good fel lows he was. We'll never forget the kindly interest he manifested in the "sorrel-top kid" who wanted to be a newspaperman. Chief among our treasured experi ences are the days when we served The Times, and we enjoy its bright pages now all the more because of those first impressions in newspaper- making.
