THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 1247 Broadway Ramblings By BLANCHE JOHNSON The weather is som.ethlng we al-j W. D. (Bill) Hairington who has ways talk about, but never do any-1 been discharged from Lee County thing about. For the past three dayr. Hospital, Sanford, and is now at his it has been almost too hot to think home on this route. Wo are happy to clearly and It bids fair to be Just that today, with no rain In sight. This weather has its good points though, in that it Is grass killing time in the fields. We venture a guess that a lot of grass and weeds will die this week and General Green will have surrendered to the , hoes and plows In the hands of the farm- er.s by Saturday night. Have you ever thought of what a mess we would make of everything if wc were running things to suit us? Take rain for instance. Would you water your neighbors crop like you would your own? Or would you feel as the man did who said "Bless me and my wife, my son, John, and his wife, we four and no more”? And how' about the ones whom you call your enemies? Chances are that they would die of thirst. We should bo thankful that our welfare aud living condition is not in the hands of mere man, and that our Heavenly Father tell you that afi''r a thorough exam ination by his physician on Saturday he was told that his recovery was complete and no doubt In a few days you will see him at his usual place, the tax collector’s office in Lilling- ton. You may notice that ho has lost j some weight, and this was as the I doctor ordered. .1. A. littglund Honored on Hirthduy On Sunday, Juno 1, the relatives and friends of Mr. J. A. Ragland gathered at his home on Broadway R'l for a birthday dinner, the occa sion being his 75th birthday. At the noon hour the dinner, consisting of everything good to oat, was spread on a table in the grove (this table was built 'by Mr. Ragland himself. In anticipation of the event). It was a happy day for him and ho was the recipient of several nice gifts. Uirthdny Dinners Dlontiful I Wo hear of birthday dinnere from plays no favorites, for It rains on the , all sides and wo wish tliat wo knew Just and the unjust. Right here I all the details so that we could tell want to add the word ‘alike”, but wo you about them, but all wo can do is must not add anything or take any-' give the names of the honored ones thing from the gospel. It is not my and their—age? Well, that’s any- intention to preach a sermon, but 1 body’s guess. Walter Holder, of the above thoughts came to me while Miimers, Mr. Dunk McNeill of this writing about the weather, etc., and louto, and Watson Stewart of Leaf- if by any chance it will cause you to let. Jy Joe Marsh Where's the Argument? You should have heard Ed Carey ■'.nd Spike Miller debating the aerits of Guernseys versus Hol- ;;teins. Ed’s our firechief, and Spike handles hardware — but to hear them argue you’d have thought that they’d been dairying for life. Finally they put it up to Sam Carter, who breeds dairy cows! .‘■am hems and haws . .. and con cludes there’s a lot to be said for ; lolstcins, and about as much for Guernseys ... take your pick! Actually, Ed and Spike were like people arguing about—say, beer versus buttermilk. Folks who’ve never tasted beer will sometimes get mighty vehement about their choice of beverages. And folks who’ve never tasted buttermilk will be equally pig-headed. From where I sit, it’s in things we know nothing about that we got bigoted and stubborn. But when it comes to things we know a lot about, we’re able to see both sides... be tolerant and reasonable . . . and above all, understanding. Mamers is building hlinsolf a very unusual and what promises to be a very attractive log house. The un usual part is that the logs are placed up and down instead of across as is the custom . . . Listen to this; One of our subscribers on Cameron R-2 says that for each week Broadway Ramblings fall to appear in its “usual place, he is going to take off 25c from his subscription price. -Just been figuring that to leave off eight weeks would take all of a year’s-sub scription and that would never do, would it E. This announcement comes from E. Gibson Smith, of Charlotte, chairman of the Department’s national defense Committee, who said the wording of the resolution will be “as strong as the committee can make it.” "Down through the years,” Smith said, "the .American Legion has al ways taken a strong stand tor pre paredness and now is certainly not the time to lesson our efforts along this line. We remember only too woll how unprepared we were during tho past two wars and for our country to be caught again like we were in the past would be downright folly.” Smith noted that although this country owns the secret of the atomic bomb "it is no gilt-edge in surance that we will not be attacked again.” "We simply must have -trained personnel ready to be called immedi ately in case of a national emergen cy.” he added. "The next time we will not have the time to get ready that we did even in World War II, and as I see it we must face this disturbing fact. Universal military, training is one of the best insurance policies against war that this coun try can own.” Questions And Ans wers For Veterans Only they who fulfill their duty in everyday matters will fulfill them on great occasions.—Kingsley.
