THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 1947 Capital News Letter ir tiring ot this new clique a little early, albeit much too early, accord ing to the gentlemen In it. (By Thompson Greenwood) TIRING EARLY. — Reports from Asheville are to the offcel that some of the political loaders there—Don r*:iias and friends, particularly—are growing weary of having the Demo cratic Party in the Stale ramvodded by .Joe Blythe of Charlotte. William Umstead of Durham, Sandy Graham of Kalolgh. W. r. Horton of Pitts- horo. l.oRoy Martin of Raleigh, and one 11. G. ('lierry of Raleigh and Gas- toni.i , , , idiis one to 10,000 others. Aslievillo wants a bigger say-so in tltese doings. The aforomentionod in dividuals, as a matter of fact, have taken the load in shaping Domo- cratic procedures since 1944. But this little machine, if such it be, is so young to die! It has only been 'lilting on all cylinders for three years—after liaviug lost out in the races of 1932 (anti - Ehrtnghaus), 1 1936 (antl-Hoey) and 1 940 (unti-j Broughton). j Wlien one considers how the late O. Max Gardner and the "Shelby Dynasty” were in tlie saddle from 1928 until 1944 !lnd the late F. M. j Simmons of Mow Bern from virtual-} ly the turn of the century until 1930, it would seem that Asheville^ ANNOUNCEMENT TO OWNERS OF UNITED STATES SAVINGS BONDS OF SERIES A, B, C, D and E The Ihuik ol‘ Liiiington i.s authorized by the United States Ti-etisury Department to pay any Savings Bond of Series ,-V. r., C. D or I'L subject to that Department’s regulations, \\ henover ai>y .such bond !.■• presented for that purpose by an individual (natural person) whose name appears on tlio l)ond as an owner or co-owner and who furnishes })roper identification. Tlie Treasury Department and this institution sincerely retiuest that you do'not redeem any bond before its ma turity date unless a real personal emergency requires such action. However, if circumstances require you to cash a bond, this institution will be pleased to serve you. Bank of Liiiington Legal Holiday, Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 1947- Bank will not be open. 'BAD EITHER WAY.—Y/hlle Hud son Schools Principal R. L. Fritz Ilians to take the State Board of Ed ucation’s revocation of his certifi cate to court, the Caldwell County supevlntondent of schools, one of whose duties it is to keep an eye on teachers and piincipals in Hudson and the other schools of Caldwell, is gening a rather thorough going- over in educational circles around Raleigh and about the State. Con- sen^us is that lie io away off base, whatever may be his plea to the IRiard of Education. He is in a bud way, certuin'y, if he says he permit ted Fritz to play around with school vouchers. He is in almost us bad a position if he says it was going on without his knowledge. So it looks like a rather mean situation either way. LYRIC THEATRE—LILLINGTON, N. C. Y., is almost as big as it sounds. It has offices In Raleigh (ostubllshod last week), Richmond, Washington, Alliany, and New York City. It is also among the top 100 advertising agencies in the land. The owner is Roy Park, who grew up around Mountain Park in Surry Coun ty, graduating at State College only a few years back. Park was up to his neck in publications at State. He founded the "Carolina Cooporator”, which many of you receive, and laid the foundation for the printing com pany, Graphic Press, here In Raleigh. Then the Clark Gablish, cleft-chin Mr. Park moved into the big time, going to Ithaca, and taking over a magazine known as ''Cooperative Digest”. He handled much of the publicity for the recent tobacco election (To bacco Associates, etc.), and now has this business, to lot the world know about Southern flue-cured tobacco. His company has also taken over the advertising and promotional aspect.*: of tlio N. 0. Farm Bureau. Yet de spite all this bigness, Park is on tiie sunny side of 40, * * * NOTHING DOING.-—Teachers as a rule nowadays Tiavo little use for liaronts, though of course they are afraid to admit it publicly. They say they liave a hard time of it getting along with mothers, who spoil their young at home and expec,'., it at school. It seems to bo getting worse, too, Anyway, a teacher at the Metho dist Orphanage hero admitted last week that she had been offered a position in the great Needham Broughton High School (the parents are the wealthy of Raleigh and State College teachers), but she turned It down, "because I think I know my subject. I love my children, and they .seem to love me. In all my classes I have only two mamas, and they hap pen to be nice and appreciative of my efforts." ♦ ♦ ♦ f FOR ALBRIGHT? — Mrs. Kather ine Boyd, widow of Novelist .lames 'Boyd, "Drams,” etc., recently re ported In her paper, The Pilot, of Southern Pines, on a talk made by Gubernatorial Challenger Mayne Al bright. Here is what she said: "An independent Democrat deliv ered to a group of N. C. voters Mon day night ... as important and im pressive address as one is likely to hear in the political field ... In everything he said there was evi dence of clear thinking and practical politics, along with the vision and idealism of the born leader.” * * * NOTES—A group of young women in State offietJS here- Is planning to form a "Little Below the Knee Club” in an effort to combat the trend toward long dresses. Some people wlio have seen tlie "Lost Colony” tills summer say it’s becoming too •‘Hollywoodized” . , , The appear ance of Gov, Gregg in it last week certainly allayed this spirit for one performance. * * * iBOONE MARKERS.—J. Hampton Rich, who witliin the past 30-40 years has spread these Boone Trail markers — big arrowheads designed by Rich himself—all over this area of the country, was convicted of careless and reckless driving In Ral eigh last week. The Chapel Hill redhead, who is organizer and leader of some safety club for school children, did not practice what lie preaches, according to the Raleigh policeman arresting him. Damage to the car he hit was fixed at $200. The police said the Rich car was damaged to the extent of $25. But Rich differed with the patroiniuii there, saying it was ac tually 50 cents. In tact, some people liave been so care- fes-s as to say that doctors in this .day in North Carolina make about the best money going. .Almost any old piU-and-wator doctor has made as much as $15,009 per year since li9'40, say the reports. But the doctors work long hours and probably de- .serve it. However, so do the nurses. The strong right arms of these doctors are the nurses But the aver age nurse in North Carolina draws a salary of $135 per mouth and maintenance. She works as least 4S hours per week.
