Meanwhile, the rsual speculation is underway as to whether ho will seek ronomination to the House next year or decide lo retire to his farm near Laurel Springs In Alleghany county, 'I'hus far. Farmer Bob lias had nothing to say about his future. Ho lias felt for some years tliat he may like to retire, but each time he gives it much thouglit his constituents move in and make him change his mind. In view of tlie Funnor’s good health and disposition as he goes along in the lower SO’s, most any Tarheel observer could do little more than draw the conclusion that his name will bo on the ballot again In li948, which will bo 38 years after his first congressional campaign in 1910. Rep. Hamilton Jones said recently that he had not given up in his ef forts to get the Army to declare sur plus the army quartermaster depot at Charlotte ahead of the two year scliedule that the Army has set for disposing of the property. Charlotte industrial Interests have been fighting for sometime to have the Army declare the base surplus within the next few months so that it could be purchased for new fac tory facilities. The warehouses there also qualify as desirable industrial property, Jones said that Charlotte businesses had postponed construc tion of now warehouses because the depot might become surplus. Jones said that befoie the end of the special session of Congress he and Senator Hoey would call at the Army Department to try to persuade the Army to change its mind. ANGIEP Theatre Angier, N. C. Dr. John W. Gunter, 33-yoar-old Sanford native, will re turn from his present duties in Lou don to assume the new post. Treas- iir.v Secretary John W. Snyder said in announcing the appointment. Rep. Deane has announced that tlie Postoffice Department had ap proved a proposal to change the name of the town of Sanatorium to McCain effective January 1. For the most part, pulillc educa tion in N. C. is :showlng a slow but steady progress. Besides substantial salary increases granted by the state legislature, there'has been a marked decrease in the inumber of teacher Vacancies in the state. During the present school year there are only 50 vacancies in the system compitred with 100 for the last school year. But REA'S restjarch division pstl- matos that still ipine 3,000 teachers need to be added! to tire staffs to re place those holding emergency certi ficates and to bring the teaching load down to 1940-41' levels. Emergency or substandard certifi cate teachers are also on the down grade. Those holding the substand ard certificates this year number ■ about 2,700 compared with 3,000 last year. Of the approximately 2,700 holding the substandard certificates,, about 95 por cent are held by teach ers in rural schools. The number of'students has In creased this year over last by nearly S’OOO and the number of teachers by more than 400. The dimmest outlook on the edu cation horizon in the state is the number of persons now taking teach er-training. The 'NEA reports "much smaller number" of men and women are taking part In teacher-training programs than In the year 1940-41. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mr, and Mrs. W. L.
