ROYAL BAKING POWDER CO., 100 WILLIAM ST., NEW YORK. Of World Interest. There is no cause for alarm, not at.least as yet because Russia (or Dickens' "Roosshyia")--keeps the entire thinking world "expectant." Effect of the trouble, discounted or remote may be after all said, more for discussion than real. Will world trade be stimulated, when, for how long and how? Do historic parallels answer. We read that statesmen every where are amazed at the momen tous violence and oneness of action throughout "Muscovy's vast do mains," they talk about a "great cataclysm" a "paralysis of that great empire," "massacres" in Macedonia indicating "exterpa tion" of the Christians by the Turks and "unrest." Truly these be great times we live in.'.' So many very important ques tions appear to be involved that much desired to be known is antici pated and are solvable by develop ments near or remote. Has all involved in the fall of Port Arthur quickened the Musco vite "masses and classes" as never before? They are keenly alive to the greater army way ofi but who is to make peace, who and how is the main armv to get back home and at them; Zemstovs and peasant show no little acquaintance with their country's internal affairs, and foreign relations, even more . so than "better informed people'' both in Europe and America or High Point. N. C. Evidence of self-government re maining "new" or future, the au thorities restore order but mon archy's weakness is exposed W ho are the authorities in the violent revolution. Supremacy of the people is Sov ereign when engrafted in genuine self government B i s m arck said "might is first of right.' The Russians believe they ought to rule themselves, peaceable evo lution eventuating in "might.'' This uiightness ought to be like God's mightness "in the long run" or grnd finality. 1 here may or may not be any "reign of terror" though spiri's of tie "myriad banished" still lives unredressed, not to be avenged, exiled Israelites by the thousands attesting. The whole world keeps asking is Russia trauslo.iuing before our vision, hrst. by violence and then by compromist? They further ask about the s!av freemsn in Austria, Germany's new role in Asia ignor ing Japan, exposed France and British aspirations. No onejj knows what a day will bring torth. J. L. K. Terror's Reign. English and American papers scarcely keep up with the Russian news. In flammatory articles, some by prominent authorities, argue the successful outcome of the Russian revolts. Is all this fulmi nation or tirade inspired more by hope than facts? However, the foreign office, some alarmed, believes Russia s present "risings"threaten foreign entanglements and a much changed form of govern ment. England's War Secretary's free speech in behalf of Ra-sian freedom, and English excitement is sufficient. ' , . Vladimir's grand dukes versus"Nick'' mere as an outside excuse, though Vlad imir's ambition "do vault" and be real is a bid case a'lthrougff. However, the Zerastovas' resolve for representation and free ballot is somenow not yet ready i to dispose of their own George IIL as per their address at ''Your Son's Cradle so reassuring to ''Unhle Vladimir." Could the Czar, as the"Kttle father," have prevented the shedding of innocent blood and by a concilatory course won his peo ples gratitude? Did he and his party and could they see to it that those blank cartridges were not loaded with death to most sacred rights? Was all this slaughter truly his last resort as self defence? Otherwise imperial sovereignty unimperiled ought have been indeed impres sively availing. Eveu not acting in such crisis renders Czar and Council highly responsible because "they be supreme rule and law." Alas! "They know what they do;" also, "God disposes, man proposes." Further news will tell how far the mob was responsible, K. Col. A. T. Davidson Dead. Asheville, Jan. 24 Col. Allen T. Davidson died this morning, at 11 o'clock, at his home in this city, after an illness of several months. Colonel Davidson was one of the most prominent men in ; the State. He was one of the few surviving members of the onfederate Con gress, bavin? been elected from the western district of North Caro lina during the civil war. Col. Davidson was a native of Hay wood county, and at the time of his death was in his 84th year. He served in the Confederate Congress until the spritg of 1864, and in the fall of 1865 located in Macon county, and in i860 moved to ti:is city. In 1864 65 he served as a member of the council of Gov. Vance and acted as commissary agent of the S ate. The latter duty was to distribute provisions to widows and families of Confederate j soldiers in western North Carolina I Three sons and three daughters ! survive him. Hints for the Girl. Some one has suggested fifteen things that every girl can learn before she Is fifteen. Not every one can learn to play or sing or paint well enough to give pleasure to her friends, but following "ac complishments'' are within every body's reach: Never fuss or fret or fidget. Never keep anybody waiting. Shut the door and shut it softly. Have an hour for rising, and rise. Learn to bake bread as well as cake. Always know where your things are. K;ep your own room in tasteful order. Never go with your shoes un buttoned. Never let a button stay off twenty-four hour's. Never come to breakfast without a collar. Never fidget or hum so as to disturb others. Speak clearly enough for every bodyto understand. Be patient with the little ones, as you wish your mother to be with you. : Neve: let a day pass without do ing sotnetbiqg to make somebody comfortable. The girl who has : thorougly learned all this might also be called a "mistress of arts.'' '-Sunday School Children. Pointed Paragraphs. The servant is said to be in even a worse condition than her employers. Berlin Cor. London Mail. Small Coins Newer and Brighter, "Have you noticed the improved quality of the coins in circulation?" asked the trolley car conductor as he pulled a handful of bright pennies. nickels and dimes from his pocket for inspection. "It's due to an effort on the part of the government to put better money into, circulation by recalling the worn and shiny pieces from which the impression of the die has become effaced. I've noticed for the past two years a steady improve ment in this respect. All the bank ing institutions now throw aside the coins that show decided traces of wear, and the treasury department redeems these with new ones. In England a soiled bank note is un known. The paper money is always new and crisp, being recalled before it becomes worn. It's getting to be that way in tjiis country with our small coins." Philadelphia Record. Glycerin For Indigestion. Glycerin is a really valuable rem edy for indigestion, and in the course of a few days or at most of a fortnight a sulfercr may expect to be cured. Jlix a small teaspoonful of pure glycerin with water and take it witfl.or immediately after each meal. Of course the patient should also Use discretion in the selection and in the amount of food, for if the diet be at fault it is folly to expect health. Chicken Broth For an Invalid. Remove the skin and fat from half a young fowl, wash and cut into small pieces, put them into a 6tevpan with one quart of water, bring slowly to the boiling point, skim carefully, then place on the back of the range, where it will simmer for three hours. Strain and season with salt to suit the taste. Time Table For Boiling Meats. Dusting Furniture. When dusting use a slightly damp cloth, for it will gather up and hold the dust far better than a dry one. This plan, however, should not be followed in the case of black polish ed furniture, as the damp cloth fre quently gives it a smeared appear ance. Disinfect Invalids' Linen. A common cause for the spread-.: ing of disease is the fact that in valids' bedclothing is washed with the common laundry. It should al ways be dipped in a disinfectant be fore being sent to the laundry. 7 "Darling exclaimed Hjc nappy husband after the minister Imd pro nounced the fatal words, "I am not ; worthy of you."
