'. .- flan and Incident From Whlcfc Sprung; In. San Prnncleco. -. , "Htfodluui," the word which Chas found place In the vernacular of the lo cal lexicon. Is vrell understood to ap ply to a clas3 of objectionable young toughs who have no respect for sex, age or the rights of deceut people and no sense of what is proper or becoming In the character of him to whom the epithet la Justly applied a hoodlum to day, a criminal tomorrow. While the meaning of the term Is well understood by the people, few there be who know the derivation ojf the word and how it cajne to be forced Into our language. It is this: It was In 1872, when the Odd Fel lows held a picnic at Redwood City. On that occasion a gang of toughs "butted In" with the otherwise orderly attendance. Among the gang who went from San Francisco was ouo whose name was Hood Lummlx. Na ture would seem to have had a farcical part in the creation of the original hoodlum, for Hood Lummlx was a most peculiarly formed creature. Clum sy, big footed, with a big mouth and protruding teeth, thick Hps, a big bushj head of hair of a dirty brick color, standing out like the quills on a por cupine, this almost malformed speci men, as Is usual, attracted the atten tion of a lot of young rowdies who picked upon him as being an easy guy for a day's sport. Go where he might, he was followed by a gang who hooted and yelled and, In brief, made things unpleasantly lively during the day, but more particularly In the after noon when the steam beer commenced to do Its work. The amusement of the gang did not confine Itself to the picnic grounds. On the contrary, they went outside, broke into orchards and flower gardens, de-. troylng valuable property, and finally wound up the day by shooting a valu able horse belonging to a rancher. This last act was more than the sheriff of San Mateo was prepared to stand, and as a result he bagged a couple of dozen of the chief offenders. When the cases came up before the justice of the peace In Redwood each and every one of the accused laid the entire blame on Hood Lummlx. Poor, simple minded Hood got six months in jail, and in sentenc ing him the Justice, who was very much displeased that he could not send the entire gang to state prison, deliv ered a lecture to the offenders, In which he said: "I now warn you to keep out of this county; we want no more of Hood Lummlx or his gang to Visit us." Hence the word became coin ed by dropping the last syllable of the name, making the word as now used, "hoodlum." San Franclsce Call ALL OVER THE HOUSE. To Wash Flannels Without Injuring the Wool Fiber. - The secret of washing flannels so that they will outlast several seasons lies in keeping the fiber of the wool uninjured. It must not have the natural oil boiled out of it, nor must the fibers be broken by hard twisting when being wrung by hand. There is no reason why woolen undergarments should not be washed as often as any others, but they must not be left in water or -in a wet state any longer than is necessary, for it is wetting that shrinks them. So flannels must never be boiled or put into boiling water. Neither must they be soaked before washing. The less they are rubbed the bet ter. Eubbing wool knots the hairs and hardens the surface. They must not be dried very near the fire nor in very fierce sunshine. This shrinks them. Woolens should be washed and hung out to dry as quickly as possi ble. Leaving them lying about in wet heaps shrinks them. Four ounces of -a pure soap to a gallon of water will produce a strong cleansing solution. Shred the soap thinly into a tub and pour the boil ing water over it. Do not put in the flannels until the soap has dis solved and the mixture is cool enough to bear the hand comforta bly. Then thoroughly shake each arti cle free from dust, put them into the tub and sluice and squeeze them in the water till they are clean. Placing Him. A friend of H. C. Frick, the Pitts burg millionaire, was discussing his tastes and mannerisms. He said: "Mr. Frick loves dearly a good, strong sermon, and in an equal de- Ese he hates 'a sermon that is care sly composed and insincere. .
