He was being driven to thedepot on Corbln street near the braid mill when the horse ran down a steep bank. Mr. Torke was thrown Into a dlteh and bis left leg broken. Both bones above the ankle were fractured. CENTRAL CAROLINA FAIR. Will be Formally Opened Tuesday, October 9th In Greensboro. The premium Hat of the Central Carolina -lair has been issued and shows a liberal policy toward exhibi tors. The premiums are the largest In the history of the fair, and an ex hibitor will be required to pay unless they are awarded premiums. The seventh annual Central Carolina Fair will be held in Greensboro Tuesday, October 9th, to Friday, October 12th, Inclusive. The management seeks to encour age the exhibition of only such ani mals and products as are really meri torious and are of utility and profit to the people of the State. This Is ithe one great object of the Fair and the Society Is 'imbued with asn ambition to add a new interest and a new dig nity to agricultural and mechanical pursuits and secure increased influ ence and greater remuneration to those so engaged. The achievements of the association, the devolopmente of agriculture and its allied Imdustrites have never been fully appreciated, even by it3 best friends; its possibilities for future usefulness In suggesting and dissem inating ideas that will materialize in Improved crops, live stock and farm practice cannot be over estimated. In speaking of the track atractioms the association make this announce ment: "It is conceded by those capable of judging that we have the finest and fastest track In the State, and season ed as it now Is by the lapse of years It will be better than ever before. The purses are very liberal and this has a wonderful attraction for the best blood of the track. We already have assur ance of the presence of some of the veritable gems of the turf will be en tered for the races so you may expect exciting races every day of the Fair." Cobb's Successor. Elizabeth City, N. C, July 16. Your correspondent is able to say to night on good authority that D. O. $tewberry, of Columbia, will succeed the late George W. Cobb as collector of customs at this point. A gentle man who usually knows whereof he speaks, says that this . appointment is cetrain. At present Kenneth R. Pendleton, collector of customs at Edenton, is In charge of the office having been ordered, here by the government im mediately upon Mr. Cobb's death. Best Chair Company. The Enterprise went around today to take a look over the plant of the Best Chair Company, which is Hear ing completion. This factory la owned by B. A. Best and J. T. Best and sis ters. The building is 220x50, two stories, divided into four departments Wfth fire proof partitions. The office and cane roam occupies a posi tion about 75 feet from the main building. The principal output of the factory will be porch rockers. This is a very creditable plant in every way. Mr. Best will start his machinery about August 15th. County Officials Dine. After the settlement of taxes be tween Sheriff Jordan and the county commissioners yesterday two dinner parties were made up at the court house. The commissioners and county officers dined at the Benbow, and the entire force of deputy sheriffs marched to Clegg's where they took dlnoef as guests of Sheriff Jordan. . Telegram. Noted Maryland Judge Dead. Baltimore, July 18. Judge Thomas S. Baer, of te Supreme Court of Balti more and professor of law In the Uni versity of Maryland, died at his home in this city today. He was 63 years of age. Belgians Congratulate Dreyfus. Brussels, July 18j The entire lib eral left of the chamber of deputies has united in a significant telegram to Major Dreyfus felicitating him on the triumph of truth over intrigue. . Nebraska Slakes Required Speed. Seattle, Wash., July 18. The batle ship Nebraska was yesterday subjected to the official endurance test, going over the four mile course, which she steamed at the rate of 19.06 knots per hour, exceeding her requirements by .06 knot, and again demonstrating her superiority. In the standarization trip and endurance test theNebraska was manned by a crew consisting largely of university students and in experienced seamen. Walking Around the World. San Francisco, July 18. Nicholas George, a Greek and a pedstrian 24 years old, has arrived here from Australia en route to Buda Pest, on a walk around the world. He must on this pedestrian trip walk thirty thousand miles In three years and three months and at the end of that time get a purse of $20,000 from the International Tourist Club of Buda Pest. He commenced his trip at Cairo, Egypt, November 17, 1904. According to his story he walks thirty miles a day and that he has ac complished the different stages is vouched in a dairy by "All sorts and conditions of men." Gen. Stoessel Sentenced. ST. PETERSBURG, July 19. Spe cial. The commission appointed to in quire into the surrender of Port Ar thur, filed its report. The commission proposes that General Stoessel, who was in command during the siege be sentenced to death and that General Pack, a member of the staff who urged the surrender be condemned to 20 years' confinement in the galleys. The inhabitants are fleeing towards Sam ara and Saratoff. Lawyer Discharged. NEW YORK, July 10. Special. Justice Blanchard of the Supreme Court today discharged from custody Burton W. Gibson, a lawyer, held by the coroner Tuesday night at the con clusion of the inquest into the death of Mrs. Alice Kinnan, found murdered on the porch of her residence In the Bronx on the night of June 8. The Assistant District Attorney addressing the Jury, said that an error had been made and he bad no objection to the prisoner being, discharged. Two More Shocks. FORT WORTH, Tex., July 19. Two more earthquake shocks were report ed from Sorrocco, N. M., extending south of 'El Paso. A Street car Was thrown from the track. F. M. Fllk, who has just returned from Sorocco, says: '.'
