SEEKING HIGHWAY TO VIRGINIA LINE Gatecville Citizens Want Road Through That Town And On To Somorton HITS HEART OF COUNTY Attorney T. W. Costen and Mr. J. A. Eaaon, both promi nent citizens of Gatesville, were in Ahoskie Wednesday conferring with local business and professional men, and offi cials of the Chamber of Com merce about the route of the State highway through Gates County. They came here from Winton, where they also pre sented facts gathered by them showing the most equitable route to be taken by the high way. From here they drove ov er to Windsor where they pre sented the same plan. For the last four or five months, a battle has raged between contending factions in Gates county about the route the highway to the Virginia line should take. The original route surveyed goes via Coropeake and touches the eastern edge of Gates county, running alongside the Dismal Swamp to Suffolk, crossing the Ga esviNe-Elizabeth City highway at Sunbury. The other wing or faction in Gates has been working on a road that would go in a direct line ffom Winton to Somerton, leaving Gates ville off the route. In the latter nJove the Gates peo ple have been ably backed up by the counties on this side of the Chowan river. The local chamber of commerce has endorsed the latter route, and the people of Winton have also been at work for theT direct route. This, how ever, met with serious opposition by Gates conty people, since it reached only one edge of the county. The State Highway Commission has announced that this change was impracticable. The latest proposal, for which the visiting Gates county people were working this week, is to route the highway to Gatesville, and thence to Gates station*and Somer ton, connecting there with the Virgin ia line. This route strikes through the heart of Gates county, and will sat isfy all contending factions, with the probable exception of only one town ship. Persons living this side of the Cho wan river are glad to accept the com promise and let it go via Gatesville thus cutting off ten miles from the orginal route via Sunbury and also making Edenton and Hertford about six miles nearer the Winton ferry. Gatesville citizens are working for this route, Winton has lined up for it, and Ahoskie persons have said they believed it the best route. Pro ponents of this route will be sought | in all of the counties on this side of the Chowan and they are expected to falf in line with the proposal.
