Miss Etta Blair spent Sunday in High Point with her sister Mrs A M Rankin. A street carnival is holding forth at Randleman this week. Solioitor Hammer is attending Yadkinville court this week. Lawyer J A Spence went to Greensboro Monday on legal busi ness. Is there any reason for not voting for Finch? Randolph never had a better sheriff? W P Johnson, who has been visit ing relatives in Concord township, returned to Roanoke, Va., Tuesday. Fire destroyed the cotton gin of Gen. W R Cox near Rocky Mount Oct 22. Loss $10,000. Says the High 'Point Enterprise: "Rev W E Swain is preaching splen did sermons in the meeting at the Methodist Protestant church." And now revenue doodles have the gall to go around and say democrats are insincere in their attitude towards the temperance legislation. Greensboro Telegram Oct. 20th. Foster Ross was granted a permit yesterday morning to erect a livery stable on South Elm St. between Louis and Lee St. J W Parks, of Parks X Roads, was in Asheboro Saturday. Mr Parks tells us that he is very busy with his cotton gin. He has recent ly put iu a new giu and is well pre pared to serve the public. The- Troy Examiner says that thirty-five people constituted the audience in Troy for L I) Menden hall, Grand Duke of Randleman. Mi. and Mrs, U. B. Jordan, of Troy, passed through town Friday going to Central Falls to visit rela tives. Jeemes Millikan, ef Greensboro, U. S. Marshal of the Western Dis trict of North Carolina and big boss of the republican party in Randolph, spent a few days in Asheboro and Randleman last week. Experienced travellers have found great bunefit by taking with them a bottle of Dr Seth Arnold's Balsam. It cures illness caused by impure water and sudden changes of climate. Warranted by the Standard Drug Co. A couple from . Liberty township drove over to Aiaeboro Monday 'and tried to procure s license to marry, but as the bride looked rather young they were requested to return aud get the written consent of tbe young lady's parents before a license would be issued. t The republicans speakers in this county make some of the wildest and most reckless statemeats imagin able. They do so without ever con sulting any record and when they are proven to be false they plead ignorance and say tbey were mism formed. Why dont you tell your bosses to inform themselves before having yon bring charges that can not oe substantia tedr The Charlotte Observer savs: "The speech of Hon. F. M. Simmons at the county court house Monday nient, was, in ait points of. arsra meat, language and effective delivery very fine one. It was an effort in every way worthy of the Senator" There u no more logical and eon vincinir sneaker in the state than Senator Simmons, and his speeches cannot fail to attract attention and win votes. Onr friend John Steed, informs us that front seven ? pumpkin seeds planted this spring, he raised forty- nve pumpkins weighing 763 pounds, If this don't begin to look like pomp kin custard as a tide line in Randle man, then we are much mistaken Who can beat thitf Randleman Times. The above Mr Steed has a brother " living m Mont- trotnerv who din" something equally remarkable. He planted a quart of pumpkin seed aud did-not mine' a The Courier favors a law punish ing the briber in elections. Make it indictable for ainuiie to buy a vote and give to the voter who sells his vote also a right to recover damaged aud there will be an end to the use of money and liquor in debauching voters. DEMOCRACY'S GREAT DAY. Arrangements Complete Tbe Greatest Crowd Ever Assembled in Randolph will Hear Senator Simmons and Other Crest Speakers Come. Arrangements have now been com' pleted for the big Barbecue aud pic nic to be held ut the Academy grove on the 27th. The various commit' tees have worked hard and the sue cess of the occasion is assured. uver iuu nurstiais nuvo wen a pointed. Let every l.ly take u tlav off and come. You used to hear tlio song, "'Mc luuiey ami i'rospenty; uow von never hear Uiiosevelt ami Pronperity it is Koose velt and lirooker Washing ton. They said the Amendment would isfrunchise you; is it true? They said your taxes would be doubled and tribbled; is it true? If not, then why support u party whose nominees attempt to deceive you? All forms of bribery and corrup tion should be discouraged and con demned by all good citizens. Is there any reason why you should turn down as good au officer us J. I roiighsf Did Kamlolpli county ver have a better treasurer thau Will Miller? Go look at his books; they aiu open to the public. Real friends of temperance will pay but little attention to the mis representation of the revenue doodles going over tha county trying to stir up strife. Their jobs depends on the success of the liquor element. Wiley Talley and Uoe Allen make charges they know to be false. They have not looked at a record and actually declare publicly that the records cannot be seen when they know there is not a sylable of truth the statements. They go off naif cocked disregarding the correctness of their assertions, thinking the peo- e are fools enough to believe the words revenue officers put in their mouths. Liquor Dealers Put Up the Cash. The republicans have abandoned all hopes of electing their ticket in this county and in collusion with Liquor Dealers-Association are put ting forth an effort to elect J M Al len to the legislature over Col W P Wood. Allen has promised them to peal the temperance measure and the Association is to put up the This effort of the republicsns should and will serve to strengthen Mr Wood iu the county. We have faith in tho citizenship of Randolph. There are many good men in the re publican party who are in favor of temperauce and tbey will not be lead sheep to the slaughter, the efforts of federal office holders notwithstanding. The people of Randolph know Penn Wood. He has lived here all his life. His private and public acts are known to every body and any efforts of designing republicans in league with the whiskey element will have a tendency to make votes for him. We don't think we are mistaken in the temper of our people in this in stance and such efforts will be met by such an avalanche of votes in the November election as to place him in the lead. Onr people are tired of Federal officers and their lieutenants rnning over the country telling falsehoods and will never again submit to the rule of Millikan, Free & Co. Property Transfers: One house and lot in South Ashe boro from B F Newby to A. C. Cov. Edgar Woodell one house and lot to W D Spoon in South Asheboro. Large Ear of Cora. Mr Jesse Fraizer, who lives in New Market township is another good farmer and has a tine corn crop this year. He has one ear of corn con taining 1160 grains and another with 1100 grains on it. So far this is the largest corn that has been brought to our notice. Free Delivery. Free Brothers on depot street are the ir.t to inaugurate a system of delivering j;nnd nt ;nnr home. No doubt other merchant? will establish this rule. HEALTH is the Most Important The manufacturers of Roval Baking Powder have had 40 years of scientific experience. Ter., and Miss Emma Prevo, of Raudleman, daugh ter of Mrs Emma Prevo, were uuited in marrirge at Randleman. Mr and Mrs Johnson left soon after the ceremony for Paul's Valley, where they will make their future home. Cabbage Snakes. Dear Courier: As there is con siderable excitement in our com m unity as well as in mauy other sec tions of the country concerning what is commonly Known as tne "cabbape snake," I desire to publish what Mr Uerald McArther, of the North Caro Department of Agriculture. :iys about these peat. Mr Marshal Pearcu found one of these snakes iu a ciblmge head a few ays ago which was sent to tbe De part for identification, and this is hat Mr AlcArtlier says: "The sea- serpent of mendacious renown seems to have been forced nut of business his year by a laud serpent which is located 111 Western North Caro- ua, where it. him taken to frighten- ng owners of cabbage patches. Many stories have been published concerning tbe deadly venom of this creature, ustialy referred to as the cabbage snake.' beverul of tiiese rpeuts have been sent to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture for ideutiHcution. In every case these have proved to be harmless; tho common water-worn, or 'hair- snake'." Snakes and serpents belong to tbe backboned seiiesof aaimals. This creature is a inematode worm belong- g tar down 111 the scale of created beings. It soft boneless body, with only rudimentary organs, it doe not bite or cbew, but absorbs its food liquid form through any and every part of its body. It is normally an internal pasasite of grasshoppers and other insects. Its presence in cab bage heads is rare and accidental, ue to the previous abundance of in sects upon the plauts. The stories concerning the deaths supposed to be caused by these worms are untrue and lediculous. There is no venom poison in them. They may be eat raw or cooked without any dan ger to the eater, The serious part of these stories is that inch publications may cause considerable loss by preventing peo- e irom eating tbe cabbage tbey have raised or purchased. Such fears are wholy groundless. The worms are not common and when they do occur upon cabbage, they will do no hat in to any one eating the vegetable. They are at worst no more hurtful than tbe worm so plentiful in apples and peaches some seasons. The so-called worm is a slender, white-bodied worm, from four to twelve inches long, and about thick as an ordinary knitting- needle. It is to be hoped that those news papers which have published the misleading stories concerning this worm, will re-publish this refuta tion, and thus help to prevent need less loss of geod food. C. H. Lewib. Why Not Items. Rev T M Johnson, president M P conference, preached an excellent sermpn Sunday. Mrs F IS. Bturdm, of Biscoe, spent a few days last week visiting Mrs C JS Stuart. Mr W C Spencer, of P B C Co., of Raleigh, has been visting relatives here. There was a large crowd to witness the McNeil-Spencer marriage. We wish them much pleasure in lire, Daniel Cgle, of Why Not, and HiM Corneilia Davis, of 3 pies, were married Oct 11th at tbe home of the bride,, - . . J A King was given a surprize birthday dinner on last Thursday, it being his 50th .birthday. All of the children and soma of his brothers and sisters and friends were there to eniov it. One of )au) Cagle's mules dropped dead a tew days ago. Mrs Wm 15 Garner ft visiting at Kandieman im weest, Mrs Nora Russell is spending tome time wita ber daughter, Mrs Letter te W. J. Teague, Asheboro, N. C. Dear Sirs: The usual way to buy paint is to take the lowest price by the gallon. Mistake; the bnyer loses by it; how much? Depends on the paint; it is so much a gallon, or so much a year. How much a gallon or year, do you think.' As mncb perhaps, as tbe total price of the paint. It may take twice the num ber of gallons. JN Avery, Delhi, N x, owns two houses, both exactly alike. He paint ed ono with Devoe and one with another paint. Devoe 6 gallons; the other 12. Go by the name: Devoe. There's nothing cheaper. Go by the price; there's nothing dearer, except not painting at all. Poor paint is better than none. What does it cost not to naint at all? Can't figure it out exactly; say a tenth of the building a year, besides looks. What is noor naint worth, theu? Don't know and don't care; yon don't wane it. uo by tbe name. Yours truly F W Devoe and Co. The result is a perfect prod uct in Royal Baking Powder. There is no substitute for it. Central tails, N. C, Oct. 86th. According to promise I will now give a short sketch of Dr Shinn'e discourse u uight Oct. 2nd at Ashe boro, N. C. He took for his subject "The Final Harmony of all Souls with God," taking for bit text, Eph. 1. 9, 10. He specified numerous evidence pointing to final harmony nature teaches it; all Its discords producing at last, harmony. Human nature teaches it; the mind uf man with its marvelous capacities yet undevelop ed, incomplete, pointing to complete ness. The soul of mau so constitut ed that it can never find joy and peace and happiness while out of harmony with Uod. This means that every sinfnl soul will get sick of Bin and of its own free will, turu back as did the prodigal, to the Father's house. Next the mission of Christ means final harmony. Christ came to care all souls of sin. and we believe he will be sncceesful. We believe in a victorious Savior. Sin is discord. When all sin is de stroyed, banished from tbe universe there will be harmony. And lastly. tbe character of God means final harmony. The destiny of man must depend upon the character ' of God, the being who made man. Is he good? If you believe this you cannot believe in a bad destiny for one of his children impossible. To the question what will become of wicked people who die in sin ? there are but four answers. Old ortho doxy would say, They will be sent to an eternal punishment. New or thodoxy would declare, They will hold out defying God and all the forces of the universe, throughout eternity, making endless discord dur ing all ages. Third; some of this same school would say, They will be annihilated God wants to cure them but he can't so he will blot them out. The fourth and last an swer to the question, What will be come of wicked people who die in sin? The answer is, "They will be cured." This is the answer of Uni- versalists Which can you harmonize with the character of God, remem bering that he is good, that he is love, that he is Father; it is obvious that only the fourth can be harmon ized. We say, he will cure them be cause he wants them. He wanted to cure them and he is able to cure them. He has all power. He has the time. He has all eternity to do it in, to educate his children in. His love is boundless and has no time limits and can never let go. It would not be love if he did let go, havmg tbe power, tbe time and be ing Father of all. J. F. Hamilton. News Items from Star. Died in his 30th year on Oct. the 6th Mr Claud Suggs. He professed religion, and joined the M church in bis young boyhood and the large number of his friends who will be pained to hear of his death will re joice to know that death found him ready. He assured bis good wile and others that he did not fear death, as he felt confident that bis faith in God would save him. He leaves a wife and three children to whom a large number of friends ex tend their sympathy. Rev H G Stamey conducted the bnrial services here. Try It oa our guarantee Respectfully, Asheboro Drag Coniirany. Billingsgate, N. C, Oct, 17, '01 Deer Pat: As I rote you last week, I am a gettin tired of the way sum of our fellers does. Wily Tally chal lenged John Brittin for a division of time at Gibson's school house last Thursday night and Brittin wore him to a fraa. He made Wily feol bad enuflt to cutis the day be was nominated. If onr fellers bad any fense they wooden t a nominated Roe Allen. Pen Wood is a tellin bim about his votin for niggers when be was in tbe legislacher, and Roe looks like he cood crawl throo a worm hole in a rotten l-g when Wood begins to talk about it. If Roe was a runmn for corn licker, he woodent get a drap. Docter Caddell cant make a d peach He's got a little old thing he rit out and memenzed. but its no good. Hr just as well get up and say: "The bov stood on the bnrntn deck When all but him had lied; Tbe flame; that lit tbe battle's reck, Shown found Roe Allen's head." !f our fellers keep Roe and Wily and the Doctor on the campane the county will go yoonanimoQsly Demo cratic. If Tige wood make a few 8 peaches it wood he worse than that Nobody likes Tige. He's too big for his britches. He thinks he's smart, but he's all the one that thinks so, Our fellers dont expect to carry the elecshun. They dident try to go to Trinity a tall, because Lee Over man was to be there. Roe and Wily noes that when they get to speakin aginst Lee Overman its just like two little rat terriers a barkin at a ele phant. Wily says he's still a prohib ishunist, but his platform is still soaked with corn licker. Say, do you no what made em call hisu Tally? Well, sum fellers was a oountin up how many times he'd changed his polyticks, and the feller that was a markin the changes wood say, "Wily, one; Wily, two; and so on till they got to Wily'a last change, and then the feller said, "Wily, Tally." They all laffed, and said, "Les name him Wily Tully to show how many times he's changed his polyticks," and the pore feller has went by that name every sence that day. I dont no what tbe Wily part of his name means, but the Tally part means five. You fellers lookout for them cir culars that boss jorge is a sendin out They'll do up yore fellers if anybody believes what they say. He's a goin to send out more just before the elecshun. We've got a little paper, too. You no tbe postal laws dont allow a editor to send out but four sample copies a year at the regular newspaper rates, so we started our n just in time to send out four ishues before the elecshun. Then we're goin to stop the thing. We haint got no sub scribers, but we're a lettin on like we have. We dont let democrats get our paper, liiey might catch up with what we're a doin. I'll just tell you, Pat, I'm a gettin in a noshuu to leave this crowd. They do sum awful ugly things. The people dont believe one word of this Annanies talk we're a doin, and they dont many ef them believe in this licker biznes our fellers has been a tryin to holdup. If 1 cum back to the democrats I wont charge a cent. All I want is to be allowed to vote a ticket that free from niggers and licker, and one that wont make me feel ashamed of the crowd I voted for. I cant vote for Wily Tally, because he tells inch big tales and changes his polyticks so often. I cant vote for Roe Allen because he ynted for so many niggers when he was in tbe legislacher, and because he's been a bung smeller and wants the Watts Law repeeled. I wont vote for Docter Caddell because he acted so ugly about gettin that $5 for preteudin to examine Enoe L York whan he dident see him stall 1 cant vote for Ed wood Free because he was deputy under Sheriff Red ding, and Sheriff Redding tried to bankrupt the county with a big in solvent lists. I cant vote for Mr Hays because they say he's not able to discharge the duties of Register of Deeds, and because he always fined democrats more heavier than repub licans when he was mayor of Ran dilmin. 1 cant vote for O J Cox be cause he was one of the crowd that nut the county in debt. I cant vote for Tige because he woodent make a congressman if he was to live as long as Mathusaly did. He barks too much. An empty wagen always makes lots of noise. Tige had better lick nostiee stamps till Parker turns bim out of the poatoffis. Rnsevelt eats with niggers and every repuon can candidate on our State ticket en Worses it, and I dont ame to vote for a one of em. Its looks like I'll have to star at home on elecshua day, or vote the democratic ticket and give my poatoffis to Wily Tally (Old Number Five), and I'll tell you what I sa a gain to do next time l rite.
