Mr. Everet Cpnpel and Miss Lil lie May Jarrett were married TueS' day night April 3rd, at the home of the brides father, Air. J. J?. Jarrett, Dr. W. I. Sumner has returned from Baltimore and New York. P. A. Hayes representing the Justice Drug Co. spent Sunday here with his parents. The entertainment given at the auditorium by the young ladies was a great success. The proceeds went towards the piano fund and amounted to about $30.00. Mr. Frank Olive has resumed his old position with the Southern here as ticket agent. John C'app, Jr. from Savannah, Ga., is here on a visit to his father J. A. Clapp. Mrs. Ollie Clapp, from 'Savannah, is also spending some time here with relatives. While in New York Dr. W. Sumner received a telegram auounc ing the death of his father, at Lu lington, N. C. Mr. Joseph Sumner the deceased, was 78 years of age and has lived in Randolph county for many years. His home was near Parks X Roads where for many years, he conducted a large farm and reared his family, it one time in his lite he was connected with the cotton mill at Bynum in Chatham county, now known as the J. M. Udell Mfg. Uo. He was al ways one of the foremost citizens in his community in affairs of church county and State, and in his passing away Randolph county loses one of its oldest and best citizens. His remains were laid to rest at Concord church in this county, near Cleridre. He is survived bv three children, his only son, Dr, W. I. Sumner, of this plaae; Mrs. B N. Mann, of Durham and Mrs. N. . Cox, of Buies Creek Academy. How to Keeep Young. To remain ever young banish from your mind all thoughts of trouble and sorrow, all ugly thoughts Do not harbor even jealousy, re venge or malice. In fact, try to love your neighbor as your self. You will find in holding happy, healthy and helpful thoughts that the lines and wrinkles will disap pear and leiuty will reign instead. Do not give way to feelings of languor and inertia. Keep ousy, Do your work, whatever it may be, with vigor and vim. Don't count your years and say. "Oh, dear, 1 am growing old." Rather forg-t them and say, "I am as young as ever I was." Much benefit is derived from the condition you keep your mind in. Say to yourself: "I am looking as aid aa I foal and I el lika twen- ty." Mix with young people, find en joyment in their pleasure. Try and forget self and that old self will forget you and pass on. Thank God that you live in the twentieth century, and are some boy, instead of living in the six teenth or seventeenth, when you would have been nobody; or if you were about forty and really in the full strength of your maturity, rele gated to tne cnimney corner in a big arm chair, with caps, mittens and knee muffs to wan! off rheu matism poor old granny! A be ing almost on the same plan as elves and fairies. She exists no longer. Nowadays the grannies are as active and bright as their grandchildren. COMMUNICATION. Mr. Craven one of Many Who are Watching Randolph Brain Away the Cob Webe. April 8, 1906. To the Editor of the Courier. I point with pride to the recent improvements both mechanically and ecHtorially in my home county paper. It is a source of .genuine pleasure to me to read of the people, and of the things which happen in my beloved native county. That stand which The Courier ha3 al ways taken Democratic in poli tics; right in everything and fear ful of nothing, has crowned it with the success which it has achieved. The thnigs which you are advocating for "Better Asheboro and Ran dolph," I am glad te see. I hope your advocacy of a new court house will result in sucessful effort by the people and that the present generation will see it. The build ing of the Panama canal is setting a bad example for people who would "do things," but I guess it's better late than never. I am gled to see you joining the "good road movement" I don't mean tS say that the Courier is on the chain-gang, but it is working for better roads, nevertheless. In this county (North Hampton), small road tax is levied on the real and personal property and those between the ages of 21 and 45 are required to work one dav a vear on the duo lie roads, or instead pay one dollar to the load fund. Under this law, all bear some of the burden building and repairing the public roads. The railroads and the one dispensary in tn county pay about half of the road tax. The county has a road commission, sepa rate from the Board of Commission ers, and has ordered several road machines and mules. I will be glad to see good roads in Randolph and the first place to start for the better, is Brame s Hill, at lrmi- If there is any surviving mem bers of the old Courier force with whom I used to mingle when I was learning the business, please give him my kind reorets- With best wishes tor the success ot the Courier, and personal regrets to yourself, i ours most sincerely, Geo. B. Craven PROMINENT CITIZEN DEAD. Mr. E. L. Barney tiradnate of Ran dolp Macon College Practiced ,Lawi Mr. E. L. Burner, died of para lysis Wednesday of last week at his home at Burney s Mill, in JNew Hope township. The deceased was 75 years of age. Mr. Burney was one of Randolph's oldest and best citizens, esteemed by all. He was a graduate of Randolph MaQon College, and early in life secured "license to practice law, which he followed successfully in another State. He has lived a re tired life for many years. His many friends in this and other States will regret to learn of this demise. Kw Suggestion About Road Building Mr. John Dixon, of Alamance county wiiting to the Burlington News says one way to build good roads is to issue bonds anil macada mize, and another is to distribute a heavy layer of a soil of a certain mixture on the roads and abandon narrow tire vehicles. ' He srys that we have all noticed in traveling along the roads that there are certain places hat never get muddy. If the soil is examined at these places it will i e found that it is a sandy mixture and suggests that this soil be hauled along the road and the bed constructed of this He says that South Carolina has been experimenting along this line and has found it verv satisfactory To Advertiser. The Courier has spent large sums of money in working up its circulation and to-day it thorough ly covers Randolph and adjoining counties besides having a large list throughout this and other states But we are working to build up Randolph county and the Piedmont section of North Uarolma. To this end we have built our cir culation, that our advertisers and the community miffht secure the create publicity. We have improved our plant and enlarged our paper all of which necessarily increases expenses. Hence this article notifying our advertisers that after March 1st, 1906, the advertising rate is as fol lows: Vet inch one time -ic " " " month per issue L'Oq " " two months " " 1 " " six " and over " " 't Iteadincr notices will be charted nt the rate of one cent per word. Jo renuiT ac cepted for less than ioc. Ml bills payame mommy. Our circulation is ot made up of dead heads and exchanges, but paying subscribers, who send us the cash for" their subscription. few are more than six months in arrears nd manv are paid in advance, This shows that we circulate among a prosperous people the class that advertisers desire to reacn. The Courier appreciates the patronage accorded it in the past and pledges every effort to give value received for future business placed with it. MARRIED. Senator Overman Secure Correction of Abnees. Secretary of War Taft made pub lic admission recently before the Sen ate Committee on Military Affairs, that the questions with reference to the travel pay of General Leonard Wooi and other army officers, which were asked by Senator Overman had resultedm good, and that cer tain abuses that existed and which were developed by the interrogations of the junior senator from North Carolina, had been corrected. Al ready General Leonard Wood has been asked to make restitntion of part of the money he received on his extravagant trip around the word. Secretary Taft haa vecom mended that, in the future, travel pay be based on actual expenses. and that army officials be required to sail on transports when making trips to and from our insular possessions.
