He left for Wendell several days ago to look after the work on a new school build ing now being erected and to do some preliminary school work prior to the openiflgof the term. Deputy Sheriff C. L. Coble, of Columbia township, was in Ashe boro Monday having in his custody James Ileyr 'a young negro, who was arrested one day last week on aa old warrant charging assault with a deadly weapon. The priso ner was placed in jail to await the next term of court, whioh convenes the first Monday in December. Mrs. Ellis Tucker has returned from a visit to friends at Star. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Parrish, of Hoover Hill, were visitors in Ashe boro yesterday. Carl RuBseli was a visitor in Treensboro last week. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Moffitt left Saturday for Lake View, . to spend sometime with friends. J no. T. Lowe, of Holly, was a visitor in Asheboro Saturday. Mrs. H. 0. Houston, of Wax haw, is visiting Idrs. J. V. Hunter. Miss Dora Kivett, of Liberty, ar rived last week to visit her brother, J. H. Kivett, for ten days. Misses Jessie Boroughs and Blanche Kearns are spending the week at Jackson Springs. Mrs. W. A. Fox, of Randleman, mother of C. M. Fox, of the Stand ard Drug Co., was a guest of Mrs. L. M. Fox last week. Miss Jessie Bumpas, daughter of Rev. R. F. Bumpas, who formerly lived at Randleman, died September 2nd at her home at Nawberne. Her father is now absent in the Holy Land. Mrs. J. M. Lassiter and Miss Treva Rush attended the burial of their grandmother, Mrs. Rush, at Farmer Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hayworth spent Sunday with relatives in the country. Mrs. F. A. Heulcy spent Saturday in Randlemau. Mr. Chas. Fox, of the Standard Drug Co., has returned from Atlun ta, where he went to visit bis broth er "Jim Fox" of base ball fame. W. R. Ingram, of Star, spent yes terday ra Asheboro. He reports that the saw mill of Burns & Bro. was destroyed by fire near Star Tuesday night. The" mill was badly dan ajed but the lumber on the yard was taved. The Committee of District No. 2. New Hope Township, Eleazer, will meet at the public school house in said district on September 29th, 1906, at 2 o'clock P. M., to elect a teacher for said school. C. E Stuart, of tfranklinville, was a business visitor in Asheboro Tuesday. H. M. Robins wa3 in Randleman Monday on business. J. H Anderson, who has been making his home in Greensboro for several months, has moved his fam ily to Asheboro and is occupying the residence on the corner of Worth and South Main St. Attention is ca'led to the new ad ertiement of the Asheboro Drug Co. in this issue. Co. on Saturday, 22th inst., at 4 o'clcck p. m., for the purpose of electing teachers. J. T. Wood went to Baltimore this week to be gone ten days. Mr. Wood represents the J. Harshburg Clothing Co., of Baltimore, and vill spend some time in the stock rooms of hi3 house while away. He is a clever and energetic salesman, is successful in his territory. - Rev. Henry Sheets, of Lexington, was in Asheboro yeBterday repres enting the State Baptist Mission Board. He came here with the virw to the election of a Baptist Church. Attorney M. H. Caldwell and Capt. Edward Shedd' of the Ran dolph Cumberland railroad were in Kandleman iuesday and Weunes day in the interest of the exten sion of their lines from Hal li son through Randolph County. John Garrett, the negro arrested at Clmax a few days ago charged with murder in Alamance coutity, was last week sentenced to 20 years in the penitentiary. Miss Stella Caveness, of Ramseur, visited friends in Asheboro this week on her return home from Star. Mrs. J. M. Johnson was a guest of Mrs. A. A. Spencer Wednesday and Thursday. Miss Bell Mont, of Statesville, is visitinz Miss Annie Moring. The protected meeting at Gray's Chapel will be held on the 4th sun day in September. Rev. G. F. Mil loway will assist Rev. Routb. Jas. Monger spent Sunday with relatives in High Point. Rev. J. H. Stowe's son, Walter, has fever. A number of our local base ball enthusiasts went to Greensboro last Friday and witnessed a close game between the savannah ana a picked Greensboro team. Last Thursdiy eenicg the Bar aca and Philathea Classes of the M. P. Church held a joint social session at the home of their pastor, Rev. W. E. Swain. Besides a large num ber of members many friends of tie class were invited and enjoyed ti e fuuetiou. The committee had pro vided two contests fur which prizes were given to the couples answering the largest number of questions. The contest presenting the names of flowers was won by Miss Xinnie Stowe and H. B. Martin. Miss Stowc received a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The second contest in physiology was won by Miss Jennie Davis and Leo Barker. Miss Davis received a handsomely biund vol ume entitled "Nearer My God to Thee." Messrs Thaddeus ferree and Clarence Rush presented the prizes. Tb committee of District No. 1, Richlaud township, Rock Spring, will meet at Micbfield on Saturday, September 22, 1906. at 1 o'clock for the purpose of eUcting a teacher to teach the school. They want a first-grade male teacher. May God through his mercy take care of them. Prof. J. H. Robertson, of Stokes county, arrived at our place last lhursday as principal of Bombay Institute. He was accompanied by Miss Jennie Reid, of Pilot Moun tain, who will act as one ot his as. sistants. The school opened this morning with nfty students and still more are expected. Funeral Service at Pleasant Kidge Mini day Morning at II O'rlock. Mrs. Cornelia Cox, sister of O. R. Fcx, of Asheboro, died at her home near Frankliuville Friday after sev eral weeks' illness. Mrs. Cox was 55 years of age and leaves two daughters, Misses Ella and Ethel, who were at the bedside when the end came. Her husband preceded her about three years ago. The funeral was conducted at Pleasant Ridge Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Mr. O.'R. Fox and family attended the service. Mrs. Cox wai also a sister of Dr. M. F. Fox, of Guilford College. Cedar Falls Item. Rev. J. J. Eads preached at the M. E. church Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon. Mr. W. E. Luther, a Seaboard operator and well-known here, spent a part of the dty here last Wednes day. Mr. Lnther has resigned his position with the S. A. L. Ry. Co. and has enteied school at Buie's Creek Academy. Mr. Hinshaw, of Worthville, was here Friday iu the interest of the new Junior Lodge that will be or ganized here in the near future. Mr. Jennings says they are get ting the lumber here for the new church and work will begin on the building right away. Messrs. C. E. Kinnaman, of Bear Creek, and Lester Trogdon, of Franklinville, were in town Friday. Miss Jennie Ferree, of Washing tori, N. C, is visiting her parents this week. Mr. J. C.
