Tne School Teacher's Creed. "I believe in boys and girls, the men and women of a great tomorrow, and whatsoever the boy soweth the man shall reap. I believe in the curse of ignorance, in the efficacy of schools, in thelignity of t 'ach ing, and in the joy of serving others. I believe in wisdom as revealed m human lives as well as in the pages of a printed book, in lessons taught, not so much by precept as by exam ple, in ability to work with the hands as well as to think with the head, in everything that makes life large and lovely. I believe in beau ty in the schoolroom, in the home, in daily life, and in out of doors. I believe in laughter, in love, in faith, in all ideals and distant hopes that lure us on. I believe that every hour of every day we receive a just reward for all we are and all we do. I believe in the present and its op portunities, in the future and its promises, and in the divine joy of living. Amen. Edwin Osgood Grover. To The Lady Headers ol'tlie Courltr. ABSOLUTELY A CHANGE. About seven years ago my health began to fail. I was completely "run down," and my blood got in a bad condition. I suffered with se vere pains in different parts of mv body, so severe that I could not lie in any position long at a time, and in coi)stMiience of this I "did not know what it was to get a good night's rest. I had been taking dif ferent medicines for the trouble for three fears, but got no relief. Then I thought I would try Mrs. Joe Person's Keniedy; I had no faith in it, or anything else for my case, but I thought it would be a change. The third night after I started on it I got the first good night's sleep I had had in many months. 1 became hopeful. The Remedy relieved the terrible pains I had been suffeimg from so long, and being able to Bleep well at night, I soon began to feel like a new man. My appetite began to improve, I began to build up in everv respect. I continued its use until I took about three dozen bottles, when I knew I was a well man. I have been cured four years, have never felt those pains since, and am now a perfectly healthy man, ncr have I ever needid any of the Remedy since. W. E. GRIFFIN. Fcrt Mill, S. C, Sept. 20, 11)03. WHERE PKEJUKY SEEMED RAMPANT AND DEFIANT. The last term of Superior court in Durham has revealed a sad state of affairs in the matter of perjiuy. Judge Moore and Solicitor Biooks stated publicly that never in their experience had they 6een so ui.vny willing perjurers on tne stauu. So shockiug was the apparent disregard for sacred oaths that Judge Moore went after the perjur ers and 6ome of them were sentenced to five yers at hard labor on the roads for swearing falsely. Others were sentenced to shorter terms tut no tine sufficed. It seemed that both whites and blacks indulged in the pleasant pastime of swearing to lies, and the county will be at the expense of boarding more peerless prevaricators man ever oeiore in her history. And it is well. When the law has been violated and when witness es are sworn and take the stand and with no regard for their sacred oaths utter falsehoods palpable lies with unblushing countenance, it is gratifying to kuow that we have judges and solicitors who are brave enough and interested enough to enforce the law. A light fine would be of no avail, but when a man is brought to his senses by a term on the roads at hard labor for swearing falsely, the result of such punishment on others who are them selves ready to follow suit in the lying business must certainly be for the good. It has been so here of late that a mail charged with crime, and espec ially the crime of violating the law in the matter of whiskey selling, had no scruples about going on the witness stand and swearing to auy sort of statement that met his pur pose. And it was for this reasou that Judge Mcore and Solicitor Brooks took the bull by the hon.s and landed about a half dozen of them on the roads for five years at hard labor. When a community gets so that it is williug to bear false witness when it becomes so depraved and so hardened that men iu it will will ingly go on the witness stand aud swear to most any kind of & lie things are getting to be serious, it is a near approach to a reign of law lessness that must prove most dis astrous. When a child finally for gets the teaching of the mother aud will lie to its parents, you can put it down that the child is going to make a most unsatisfactory citizen. And when a citizen finally becomes imbued with the belief that his oath means nothing; that he can, with impunity, take the witness stand and swear to anythiug that suits his purpose, you may look out for what we might term galloping degeneia. y. And when that stae of degeneracy comes look out for your lives, look out for your pro pertylook out for anythiug you set value Upon. There can be no doubt of tne effect of this term of court in Dur ham. It means that when the special term is called iu November and followed by the regu'ar term iu December, those who last. week might with cheerfulness have com mitted perjury will have a care. They will see that their friends are on the roads and in stripes aud must do time for five years for reck lessness in their statements, and no doubt all other criminals will have a more thoughtful care. Judge Moore and Solicitor Brooks are both to be congratulated on tlie.ff work. Some may thiuk that five years on the public roads for a mis statement of facts, under oath, is a little severe, and we will grant that it must be quite a j ir to the perjurer receiving the tidings but the way j ot all good than by helping in the to break up crime is sometimes se-1 care and equipment for lif of these verity as well as certainty of pun- homeless children)' Such a method isutuwit. If a m-'ii can swear to a of expressing thanks to God appeals lie to save himself, ai.d feel that he . to us, aud, surely it is pleasing to c tu do so with impuuif, he is going I God. to utter the falsehooti. Not all I The aid received by the orphan's men but most all men. But if he j homes of North Carolina at Thanks kuows that to be detected in a false-' giving is a factor in the mainten hood nitans five years of stiipes and ! ance aud improvement of their toil and loss of freedom, lie is per-lwoik. haps not going to commit a crime j May the observance of Thanks where it will be ueeessaiv to swear j giving Dav this vear be even a lie.
