Judge Gilmer came over on Satur day, and most of the lawyers were her6 on good time. There seems to be an un usually fiill attendance of theml could not obtam a full list, but I observe Meg' sra. Axley and Posey from Cher 3kee Elias and Geo.11. Jones from Macon, Fry from Swain, the Fergusons, P. M Henry, ; Moody, Fisher and .tate from Haywood, Johnston from Buncombe, and Morse and Hampton of the: Jackson bar1. No doubt L have omitted some names, for I -have never found them all at one time in the Court House. ' The criminal docket is a dark one and is fuller of more varieV offences than is u.?ual with a people &z gp.ae.aly observ ant of law; Affraya, assaults andjatter iei, carrying concealed weapons figure somewhat too prominently. There are few cases however which betray innate moral depravity; and the cases of larceny are creditably very few. . - ; There is one case of horse stealinc, a man named Beard who committed the offense in Canada township, was caught in Transylvania, and lay there . until brought over by officer Aiken to-day. The gravest case is that of Lambert charged with the murder of Wilson. He has been confined in Buncombe jail, and reached here this morning in charge of bheriif Kieb. , It is thought the case will be removed to Macon for good reasons. Mr. Kope Elias is one of the counsel for the defense, I do not know, the others. n i i . . i . i - vyuujiue oi me transactions oi ine Court I have found nothing of stirring interest. I am sorry to learn of much sickness in . parts of the county and a considerable- degree of fatality, pneu monia and typhoid fevers being the pre-' vailing diseases. ' The family of Mr. Na than Coward has been severely afflicted. He has recently lost his most excellent wife and a son, has another sen now verv sick, and his daughter the wife of Mr. L. J. Smith, is also very seriously ill. Mr Woods Zachary and wifeare. Jjoth very ill, the former perhap improving, the latter critically sick. All those are well known to many of our readers, being ot prominent families in the county of Jackson. , v . The county feels very heavilv the ef fect of. last year's drought. There is much privation yet to be under gone by man and- beast before the coming crops will restore plenty. The growing wheat crop offers little comfort. It will be Iqsa than half an average- JThe plough is at work with preparations for an early planting of corn. There is prospect of a large increase in the-acreage of tobacco, especially in the northern portion ojf the county, and it is believed double the crop of last year will be planted. .- " The mica interest is very active though somewhat changed m locality . "lne workings have come closer;, to Webster.- Mr, Cartej: Jkysoa, s. jspeiagJa-Buno I about a mile and a half from the Court House which at present is very produc tive, and gives fine promise. : Air. A. W ." uryson 01 iankan, has inst concluded the purchase of a mine two and a half miles distant which is regarded as won derfully valuable. Perhaps some account of it will appear in the Citisek from an othei -source. . There is another - mine some miles from here in which Solicitor Ferguson has an interest which is high ly rated; and I hear accounts of the mine oq" Vannah Creek on the'road to Frank lin Vhich seem almost fabulous. This is worked by Mr.. A. H. IsbelL late of Asheville. Of the other, mineral inter ests of the county, little is now said. Another interest -was-called to my. at tention to-day which may go to the en couragement of those who have gone or may go into carp culture. Mr. L. C. Hall-Biade a tish pond on" bis pretty farm just across the river from here, per haps vtwo "years ago, -and stocked it a year ' ago with fish four or ftve inches long. Those are now fifteen inches or more long, and the abundant vouns try are larger than the stock originally put It ib pleasant to note the changes made in mail arrangements since I was last here, a year ago. Then the mail . from Asheville lagged on the joad two days. Now leaving that place at half past nine in the morning it is here and delivered at a little past 2 p. m. . Passengers for Webster may leave the train at Sylva from which, place they are r conveyed in good conveyances aha capital teams, Tsy Mr. A. M. Parker; or they go On to Web-j tVl VtV VVj UVIU VliV . UiUU til JS. JVVll o Creek, at which point Mr. W. A. Enloo and Young and Bynum all have good conveyances. -The distance is almost precisely the same, 4 miles, i " - - T - There is one more revolution to bring about. -: The mail reaching here; at 2 o'clock, instead of being pushed on the same night to Franklin, 20 miles, and gaining that much on its way West, stops here until next morning. V; It should be in Franklin at 8 o'clock in the :evening bfthedayit leaves Asheville.' It. does not in fact reach there until 13 or 1 of the next day. Our new Congressman could not do more essential service to his Western- constituents: than by ex pediting matters. , Our Western friends are impatient to see the Daily Citizen while it is still damp from the press. Yesterday, in rambling about Sylva, I paid a visit to the grave of a man once well known in the annals of Haywood and Jackson, a citizen of the last when it was part of the territory of Hay wood. Jos. - Keener was a man of mark in his day, a man of sound . judgment, large practical common sense, a fine Bpeaker, a man of keen wit and terrible powers of sarcasm, genial, yet feared, popular, influential and successful He was a member of the House in 1844-5, and of the Senate ia 1863, and may have been in the Legislature at other times. Few men of the county have leit so- deep an impression upon the" memories of the people or the history of the county. His family may boast -of a kind of,antiquity in Jackson It settled on Scotts Creek when the Indian titles were scarcely extinguished, and "where the savages must have been close and troublesome neighbors. I notice among the few leg ible tablets, the names of his maternal parentage, the Cunninghams tho most frequent. v ; - v .. -: Mr. Keener died at the age of C5. One eon, Mr. J. P. Keener, lives at the old homestead on Scott's creek, "a place dear to the memories of the politician of ante bellum days. :-' -t ,1 , . V, , I saw at Sylva this niorniag our old friend, Maj. J. 11.
