'.n.ou i he saddest looking mea in New Orieacs is ona who wears a blonde beard and an ir of rebellious dejection as he goes scooping wiili interminable rattle ona roar over the track of his own' roller coaster. The enterprise at this writing is not a popular sutcsa. The track pur sues its devious way 11 a circular series of stilts set in a niariliy bit of ground near one of the ou'rances to the exposition. It is precisely similar to the coasters at Coney Islancl, but it is regarded here by visitors as something coarse, improper and uninteresting. . ; . Although- huge placards inform the public that two rides t an te enjoyed for the small sum of 5 cents, it would appear that the solitary man with the blonde beard is doomed to go tearing around on the track with never a soul for company for the rest of his stay. Katty visitors from the north pass the familiar stmcture with out a glance; loudly dressed men and women from the upper inland cities look at it uninterestodly. and southern observ ers sea nothing in its din and nrroar to at tract. V'-. -"'-''-" At tworuinute iutervals during the day the solemn man stepa upon the car and pushes her olf. . He has traveled the route so much that the stcej descents, and sud den swerves have 410 effect, whatever on hfs equilibrium, and he goes banging, bouncing, a.id rattling along with un ruXed mien." If he happens to be paring his nr or realin a newspaper he goei right on ' with the occupation while th car is careening wi'dly about. He ; never smiles, bat all day long through weather that is d smai or damp, as the case may be, he goes on his lonely way. ' , f ....-' ' . V '!- 1 leer Hil Wine. J. - : i iNathma) Eeview.) " C'' ; C '1 Beer suits the sluggish laborer or Hit energetic navvywhen his work is done, and his system, like that of a . Scandina vian V iking or Scythian warrior in his hours of repose,' era via first exhi'aration and then stupid, thoughtless contentment. Wine suits 'ess active and more passion ate races, to whom excitement is an un mixed pleasure; brandy those who crave for stronger excitement lo stimulate less susceptible nerves. But physical stimu lants of our fathers and grandfathers, .18 the moral excitements of remoter times, ate far too violent for our generation. Champagne has succeeded port and sherry as. the favorite wine of those who can afford it, being the lightest of all; and time was, not so long, when medical men were accused of recommending champagne with somewhat careless facility to those whose iierves,--worn out by unhealthy pur -suit of pleasure, by unnatural hours and unwholesome 1 ercitemeht, might have been e :ectually though more gradually restored by a change which to most of tLeru at least was j ossible; by life in the ountry rat'-er than iu .London, by the fresh air of tho early morning instead of that of midnigh t in over-heated gas-lighted rooms and a poisoned atmosphere. - Pattl and the Scotch Ballad. ; Chronicle ."Untlertones.,,l Palti is not only a great artist She has a wonderful head. She . possesses a rare accomplishment f ha can talk. French, English and Italian like a native. That is not what I allude to. She can speak Scotch. Perhaps you don't see the ad vantage of being able to sing a Scotch ba'lad and Patti can sing one better than anybody I ever heard. There is a-simply enormou? advantage. , She might find herself anywhere in the world in Thibet; or Tartary, or India, or the Cannibal islands. 'Ihereis a fair chance that she might not find "11 Parbiere" or "Semira mide", intelligible in these lands. She might not appeal to the audience with so much effect. But if she sings a Scotch ballad, it is betting five to one that in Mongolia, or Tahiti, or anywhere else, a man will jump out of the orchestra seats and dance a Highland t ing in the center aisle and raise the - rafters with applause. He'll be a Scotchman. You can't go any where where you won't find one. ; Karajo Naturalists. 1 ' ' . IKew Criejm Tim j-Dmocrat. 1 ' ." Dr. Washington Matthews has been shown that the American Indians, and es pecially the Savajos. are in many respects superior ' in their knowledge of natural historv to the white men who have not made the subject a special study.' - They are keen observers not only of the ani maU and plants which contribute to their sustenance and other needs, but also of those which are. unused, rare and .incon spicuous. The Kava.os have a name for every mammal, bird and reptile in their country, and for nearly every plant, and all the larger insects; and their knowledge of the several species is usually minute. They have made many divisions into groups which are identical with those re cognized by the Caucasian naturalist; and this sometimes occurs when- it seems in credible that the Indians could have dis covered the characters on which the white naturalist bases his classification. Hood, known to almost every man, woman and child in Athens, bears the following testimony an to the virtues of Swift's Specific (S. S.8.) . -, r, . , " , . For twelve years I Buffered from mercurial poison, with all of its torturing pains. I- was treated by several physicians, and was dosed on iodide of potasainm - abundantly. This treatment increased my trouble. My blood was thoroughly infected; my skin was thick and yellow; my stomach was weak so that I could not retain my food; my person was broken out with sores which became offensive ulcers, and my strength was gone. Mercury brought on rheumatism, and potash had ruined my stomach, and I thought there was nothing left for me to do but to cue bo thought many Of my friends as I went hobbling along the street, t I tried all the remedies within reach, bnt to no avail. - At last a friend suggested the use of Swift's Specific. Like many other drowning men, I was ready to catch at any straw that came in sight. I procured six bot tles from Dr. Long. - The first bottle gave me hope. The nausea of the stomach disappeared, and by the time I had taken the third the hard lumps on my seek went away; the ulcers were healed; my complexion cleared up, niy akin smoothed off, and my strength began to return. I have taken in all about thirty bottles. It has made a new man of me. : I am a man of 63 years,, bnt am strong and vigorous, eat any thing and do any kind of work. I am sound and well. It is my honest opinion that Swift's Specific has taken me from the grave's mouth and added many years to my Ef e. I would recommend it to suffering humanity every where, not as a universal panacea for all dis eases, but as a specific for all blood and .skin diseases, such as blood poison, rheumatism, scrofula, eczema, tetter and ' catarrh, for I have Bf en it tried on most all of these. . I am ready and more than willing to answer all in quiries tending the above points. I am well known in Athens, - and refer to any one or all of the old citizens of this city. ' . WttET F. Hood, Athens, C a. -" Jan. 6, 1885.- " The Bent la tbe Harbet. ;: I have been afflicted with a blood humor and indigeston for fifteen years.. I have used varions medicines, bnt with little trarnose. ' I have received more benefit from Swift's Spe cific (S. S. 8.) than anything else I have ever taken. It is the best blood purifier on the market.' A. J. Beooks,. Bout Bock, Tex. Feb. 13. 1885.
