Utiles EswWA Hart i Life Bt- til' torn of the Sea. ,-' -y'v--. j TT. CLV Letter.!. Hearing the remark frequently made by western people, "I would like to see the ocean. " it occurs to me that a sketch of a voyage out of New York with the Sandv Hook pilots might not be uninter estmg. This is an old association, of pilot governed br laws and charter. ow..ing in co-partnership a large number of schooner-built boats. They sail east and south in the direction of incoming vessels, in active competion with each other, under a . general law that every vessel must taka the - first pilot Who boards her. The - contest for -vessels, due to -cactive : com petitioner leads them' out -S00 and 600 miles from port I have gone with them on voyages of a week and, mora On one of these we went aboavd where the boat lay at anchor in the - upper bay four pilots, a crew of vfiix.- and myself. The pilots were arrayed iu the latest style from hat to shoes. cliut'Whcn -the order 'was given t make sail these dandies-went be- .Jow. reappearing shortly after, in the roughest clothes, of heavy, course goods. and a perfect museum of hats. After I had made a like change of apparel, we all sat on deck smoking and chatting as we sailed post the forts at the Narrows and down the lower bay, pver the bar and past c anay hook ana vne Highlands oi Nevcrsink, until dusk closed down over the sea. The net morning we turn out at dawn. I while decks are being swabbed, dress and suave. DUKviuKjuunteu, wivu lue uoau going up and down hill, and with an oc casional three-quarters lurch, is ticklish business, as you may. imagine. .The schooner is built after a model peculiar to us Kina it is very strong: and compact though with good lines for sailing quality. low at the waste, with deck free as possi ble from obstructions so that the sea can make a clean sweep and do little damage heavy spars and canvas, and a very deep keel. When reefed s down, " the boats win endure a storm which would cripple the best of ships. There is no" capsize or sink to them. The danger to pilots is collision. and in going aboard of vessls in bad weather.. When a vessel signals for n pilot by. setting her. flag in the main shrouds, the one whose turn it is goes be low, ana appears on decs again dressed In ood .clothes ana with his grip in his and. The yawl, which has been lashed on deck, bottom up, is balanced at the middle of her keel oh the rail, and then. with a vigorous shove, is sent overboard. Boats,- crew and pilot tumble in, a feat re quiring skill and steadiness when the sea is running high, and start for the vessel. when tbo next difficulty arises to get the pilot auoara witnout oeing capsized or store alongside. WLen once on deckio is in absolute command. . , - - , Signaling, or, as they say, "signalizing. " at night is a striking spectacle. Directly tn the darkness two wite lights are .seen. one above the other. A pot of .naphtha. with a lid through which runs a stick, the immersed end wrapped with -woolen hTOS5S on deck, lakincr the 6tick in band it lifts off the lid, and the naphtha end is iiguied, making a taming torch. This is swung in large circles. three times, illuminating the vessel from stem to stern aud from the surrounding waves to the masthead. It . is then plunged into tho pot, extinguishing the name and leaving ail around in impene trable darkness. This is twice repeated, and, as the torch fares around.' sails. cordage, men,' and broken - waves are illuminated with a sickly glare. We near the signal lights cautiously and put the pilot aboard. And so we sailed on east wardly until we put our last pilot on board the City of i hester, when from the bridge he signaled me to go below and in dulge in wine, cigars and sleep, and take my ease ones 10 port. y e nave ceen out oi. signt oi land now five days Bince we left 8aay Hook. The exposure tells upon the pilots, and as a rule they break down earlier in life than landsmen. Their fac ulties remain wonderfully acute while in health.
