Charles Price, of Salisbury, spent Saturday and Sunday in this city, at the Swannanoa Hotel. Messrs. -Muller- and Monday have spread to the breeze a large national flag over heir headquarters. By Wednesday morning all the city will be fluttering in gay colors. Messrs. Annie Firmin and her sister Katie Firmin both appear in Charles Reade's beautiful domestic play of "Driven from Home" or "Out in the Snow" lo-night. - Messrs. F. W. Joslin and T. C. Gard ner of Big Rapids, Michigan, are visiting Asheville, stopping at the Eagle hotel. Mr. Joslin lias been a reader of the Citizen for some time. We are pleased to see them here. Wc were pleased to meet in our office this morning Mr. Henry Cowan, chief clerk in the State Treasurer's office. He spent several days last week at the Waynesville White Sulphur, recuperating his health, and is now trying Asheville. Mr. J. B. Wilson, of Sandy Mush, has purchased the new and large store-house of Mr. H. W. Gilbert in the town of Leicester, and will soon occupy it with a handsome stock of general merchandise. We wish Mr. W. full success. ; ; Everything at Camp. . Scales is in readi ness for the opening of the encampment on Wednesday. , The tents are handsomely and conveniently arranged, an abundance of spring water has been, found inside' of the encampment grounds, and every - comj fort has been provided for. We know the boys' will have comfortable quarters. The Wilmington Star- suggests, and very properly, that employers of that city should give their clerks who belong to the military, leave of absence from business to attend the encampment. It ought to be done all over the State. The. young men are faithful, and hard work ers, and are entitled to two weeks' re creation. We hope this suggestion will be observed everywhere. It is nothing but justice. ',) Madison county, has at last gottert-hold of the right breed of "cows. One attemp ted to take possession of the railroad track, near Marshall, a few days ago, just about the time the train came along, and, of course a collision took place. ? In the scene that ensued, the cow was lifted not only off her feet, r but off the track, and tumbled over square uponher head. She laid still a few moments, as if meditating upon things in general, and cow-catchers in particular, but having solved the problems to her evident dis gust if not satisfaction, she quietly . arose and went about her business, chewing the cud of eweet content, we reckon. The Disease Catching, m , , The disease of getting out of jail seems to be catching, and the safe exit which took -place in Asheville recently has had effect in Marshall. Sunday morning, about 4 o'clock,, three 'birds' lifted the bars and flew away, or words to that ef fect. The names were not given us, but the offenses for which they were con fined, for a few days, wero horsestealing, fighting, and some minor offence; About breakfast time it was accidently discov ered they had gone, when great excite ment broke loose on the community. The brass band was ordered out to guard all the bridges, even including the site of a bridge which has been gone lo, these many years, while a strict lookout was kept upon the pass which leads to the nearest distillery in Tennessee. In justice to the jailor we should say that the jail was beins; repaired and all the doors and windows were out, so the pris oners had only to break the lock on the cage and bid farewell to that vain world, and leave for home or somewhere else.
