A RIOT IN CLEVELAND
The Striker Strike a Sad . Blow t Their
, Cause. .
Cxevelakd, O., July 16. After saverai
' days of comparative quiet, and to the sur
prise of everybody, the riotous f creigners
who have been on a strike at the Cleveland
rolling mills for nearly two weeks broke out
in a fierce charga' upon the rolling mills
with the expreil determination -oi demol-
. blring them.; - , ;
About ono hundred policemen, waro . at
Duce hurried to the scene and met the mob
jiist inside the gabs of the mill yards. Dep
uty Su per in tancLju t Mahoua, - in bharge- of
the pohce, endeavored to pacify tha mob
with the warning that thsy would surely D9
beaten and many get hurt, perhaps killed,,
but ho was run over aai an entranca riade
into tha yards by 1!i3 novv iaf arlated mob.
He at once ordered his men 'to "charge,
and a terrific hand-to-hand fight took : place
which lasted about ten minutes, and in which
clubs, stones and policeman's sticks were as
thick as hail stones. Brokan heads, noses
md black eyes were too numerous . to count,
Vut only one man was fatally injured. He
vas a Bohemian and refused to tell what his '
lame was. '
A dozen or more were locked up, though
badly wounded. Two offic?rs were badly
cut about the head and face, and - nearly all
the : officers received bruises. . The rioters
dispersed in every' direction, and ' it is now
thought tho lesson taught thsm will ' be so
wholesome as to prevent a similar occurrence
In the near future at least. . .1 -'
