A Jiublic-hearing began at the city lall yesterday to exavnine into a charge of horrible cruelty against the city alms-house officers. It is charged that several children have been confined in dark cells and kept upon bread and water diet for periods varying from one to five days ; that little children have been immercifullv beaten, kent in cold roomsseantily. clothed and;Qthei?J wise ill-treated ; that on one acca sion a small boy was dragged out of bed, thrown on the floor and kicked about the body, from the effects of which he has become a cripple for life; that another boy has been kept in a damp ceil ior four days with no other clothing than a shirt; that a child of 10 years has had its teeth knocked out by a blow, while a woman has been khown to give birth to a child while confined in a damp cell. These cru elties have extended to both-old and feeble men and women as well as to 3'oung. The charges also assert that a certain officer of the alms house has sold city property with out making a return to the city authorities. Pittsburg, July 22. Two fere cious bull dogs attacked a nurse and a three old child of John Paening yesterday afternoon The nurse is badly bruised. One of the dogs seized the baby by the foot, biting it off at the ankle. The child will probably die. It may be encouraging to some of our friends to know that of the 51,000 fourth class postmasters in the United States, 3,500 of them have been filled by democrats since March 4th. Altogether the present admin istration has appointed about 4,000 democratic postmasters. . . - - " There are now 2,500 stores and shops in New York City which are closed on Saturday afternoons. It is now estimated that the wheat crop of this year, is 143,000,000 bushels less than that of last year. IBirjto Eanlion in Harper's MaKaztue.l The air was still as death, and thcro was not a puff of wiDd nor a rag of ; cloud in the whole horizon. I observed, however, that th,o sky had un dergone a curious change,. There, wa3 no diminution of the blazing suniiuht. but the deep blue had been superseded by a strange white glare that was nearly biind-' ing, acd the heat had incrensed rathc-r than diuiinishedL We saddled hastily, and were soon threading our way through the hroiliDg labyrinth of sanvl-h ills. and out on to the broad mesa again. We had not gone moro than a mile or two in the direc tion of L'spanola when oe, who had been lYlanmniv nlmnt in nil A I - 1 a CllH rlonl V lemaruea, - mere sue comes . ana jump ing olf his burro, comsucntcd. tyinsj him up behind an ad.a cnl l:ea; of" large bowlders. A little brownish-b!r.ck c'.oud. no bigger than oso's hand, was the monster fliat was thus devouring the landscape. We hastily secured tl:o animals in the shelter of the rocks, and came back to look. The cloud had already spread quite across the plain aui alley, and was ap proaching with frightful rapidity. It was not more than rive miles away. It swe,.t aFoaff toward us. with constantly a celer- 1 filing speed, a bclly-injfperieatoue black wall of dust, that sent long waiving ling ers up to the renith. . f Mil after mile of mesa, and hill, after ' hill, disappeared in its vast maw, until there was only one rise left. This was swallowed up, and then, almost before we couid-seek shelter, the storm was upon us with ji shriek and a blast-like .the breath from a cannon. In an instant everything was obscured. I peered through my half-closed lids, aod could not sec a sage-brush " which I had noticed the momcut before only a few feet distant. The air was full of the dull roar of the battling winds. Wo co.ild barely hear the sout:d of our voices when we shouted. Everything had been wiped away from the face of the earth, and a blur of gray dust was all that remained. I could barely distinguish these nearest me through this strange mist5 The worst of it lasted for , about half an hour, I should think, but the air was still full of dust when we arrived home about two hours later. Such is a New Mexican sandstorm We found all our household goods covered with a mat of from half an inch to an inch of an impalpable powder, which had sifted in through every crack and cranny. Nothing had escaped. Ha;;o"atry. ITheodore Sinutrn's Letter. ' Mrs. Oliver Ilardnian, an old resident of Wal ton county, and a lady of culture and promi nonce, has this to say of the treatment of cancer with H wilt 8 Bpecinc: - . Over fifteen years ago a cancer made its ap pearance on my face. It was treated with plas ters, and the core canio out. - The place healed np after some time, and seemingly my face was welh However, in a few years it returned again with more violence than ever. It gave me a great acai or pain, xne lormer remedy seemed to do it no good. Knowing the disease to ran in the family, having had one sister to die with cancer, I became seriously apprehensive of my condition. It continued to increase in size ana virulence. I ' ilmotit gave up all hope of ever being cared. ; The physicians advised the use of the knife and caustic.' This was more than I could bear, and refused to have it operated S XI M. lit ' i-i . - . upon iu mat wuy. ni orner remeaies - were used, but the cancer continued to wow worse. The pain was excruciating', and my life was a burden. In this extremity my son, Dr. Hard- man, recommenaea me to try owirt fl opecinc. It was the last resort, but I was so prejudiced against the use of patent medicines, and espe cially this one, that I hesitated some time.. At last I gave my consent, not believing there was any virtue in it The first bottle only increased the size of the sore and the discharge from it, and hence did not inspire me with any - hope. On taking the second bottle there were signs of improvement The spot began to decrease, as well as the discharge, and hope sprang up in my heart. Could it be, I asked myself, that I was at last to be released of this disease? It has given me so many dark hours in, the past that the idea of being well again almost over poered me. There was a contest between hope and f oar for a long time. It was a long night of weeping, but joy came with the morning. There is nothing left to mark the place but a small scar, and I feel that it is im possible for me to express mv gratitude for this great deliverance. It is a wonderful medicine. Una. Olives HAhdman.
