Mayor Aston, Messrs. Locke Craige,

We had the pleasure of a visit this

A most pleasant article, happily de
scriptive of Asheville and surrounding
sections, appears in the Salisbury (Md.)
Advertiser, written by a fair sojourner.
We wish we had space to mare some
extracts-.
A meeting of the Asheville Jockey
Club will take place at Ma. J. G. Mar

iness of importance will be considered. '
A canary bird, yettow with dark wings,
a splendid singer, escaped from the res
idence of Mr. Jordan Stone on Sunday.
Any one securing him will be fully
rewarded.
Justice D. II. Reagan, of Weaverville ,
was in the city to-day. He reports every
thing prosperous in his section. A num

Hon. A. S. Merrimon of the Supreme
Court Bench, and family, arrived in

Main street.
The weather for the pa6t day or two
has been unprecedentedly hot. for this
section, though the nights are comforta
ble enough, ior several hours during
the day, however, the sun is unusually
warm for this climate. Jit is navmg sev
ere effect upon vegetables.
A runaway and partial smash up of a
bret took place in Courthouse square
this morning ' about 11 o'clock. The
horses dashed down Torth Main street
and brought up with a crash against the
telegraph poet in front of Howell'B with
such force as to break the horses loose,
which were Mopped after short rnn.
No one hurt. A friend suggests that
the lives of a dozen children were saved;
in other words, so many children run
loose about the streets, that it was a kind
of miracle that none were in they way
to be hurt.

Mr. W. G. Zeigler, well and most pleas

admirable articles on the mountains of

The Fiimin-Jack Comedy Company
will repeat tbegreat moral temperance
dramaTen Nights in a Bar Room, at the
Opera Hall to-night. Mr.-John Jack as
Joe Morgan, in which character, he is
unsurpassed, in fact it is the most life-like
portrayal of the Drunkard ever seen in
this city. Miss Annie Firmin as the
patient loving wife, of Joe Morgan, gives
this lady an ample opportunity to dis
play what actiqg is in the hands of a true
artist. The entire eompany appears, in
the cast and we can assure our readers of
a pleasant evening's entertainment.
This is a play that every family should
witness. So brimg out your little ones,
and give them a rousing house.

; Our authorities are doing the very best
Ihey can, with -a difliuult nd trouble
some matter; and with the best and all
they can do, dissatisfaction prevails
.mong many. . To make the water-works
satisfactory, both in supply ' and ilen -!
sive of facilities, will require much more
moving than cur authorities will likely
have, unless the required amount shall
be directly vcted by the people, and this
meets with, opposition. The amount
voted at first was coo limited, but was the
best that could there be undertaken. As
far as it goes, the investment has proven
a splendid one for Asheville, having on
several occasions secured more property
than the institution cost; but something
needs bo done, and soon, towards im
provement and enlaigement. Will the
people vote the necessary amount, or,
shall the works be Bold to a private
company ? As : intimated we do
not- think the people are inclined to vote
more money for this purpose; therefore,
the next plan is to sell the property to a
private company. AH . enterprises are
managed more successfully by private
companies, because their direct interest
involved, will not permit neglect or abuse;
and, if a company can be formed, which
will purchase this property, under prop
er agreements, we believe it will result,
in the end, more satisfactory to the com
raissioners and the public, at leact. home-
thing ought to and must be done, and we
throw out this to ascertain the views of
the public upon the matter.

. AH the morning newspapers to-day
publish copies of the account of the fu
neral of Gen. Grant. All agree that the
outpouring of people on the occasion and
their deep, grief as indicated by , dis
patches were something wonderful. The
Times has a special dispatch three col
umns long detailing the scenes and
incidents of the funeral, and also prints
a leading editorial praising and recalling
many personal traits of the dead General.
It expresses unbounded admiration for
the conduct of the A men can people" con
cerning the burial of Gen. Grant and
p.-onounces the funeral a "spontaneous
outburst-. : of -1 ational-ad miration frd
gratitude which, although it can . do
nothing for its actual object, is not less
to be commended."
In conclusion the -That says; "No

you can scarcely find a man, woman or

deserving the confidence of the people.
It is not a patent medicine nor vile

of their money, and that is one reason it
is such a favorite with all classes. An
other reason is, that it cures dyspepsia
and indigestion, female complaints, nu
