Mr. Warrock, editor of the Burnsville Pioneer, and Mr 6. D. Ray, the mica king, of the same place, were in the city Saturday. We were pleased to hear the. prospects for the Pioneer were excellent. Mr. William W. Tompson, residing on Avery's Creek" this county, brought to our office Saturday- some very beautiful specimens of iron ore, and iron pyrites, louna in large quantity on his premises. The deposit is said to be a very rich one. is some twelve miles from this city, and is attracting much attention. Abundant, gentle rains fell through a portion of Saturday, and yesterday morn ing. - The ground seems thoroughly wet. Much good will follow, and very little harm. The only-crop to be injured is tobacco; and as the growth of that had not been suspended by drought, there is no renewal of growth to be apprehended as in the. middle section. ! .' '; Mr A. G. West has just returned from a trip to Cherokee, and says that oh Val ley River the corn is from thirteen to fifteen feet tp the first ear, and such ears I Other crops throughout that section are just as good. Th Lenoir Topic B&yat - There is great curiosity . anions the people to knilw "if anything has been heard of Ray and An derson, and we keep on the alert to learn the latest about them. Through a reliable but secret, channel we learn that a friend of Calloway's pretends to have received a letter from him about ten days ago. Calloway is reported to say in that letter that he and Ray are together and that in two days from, the time the letter was written they would be out rf the United States. Bat whether they were on the banks of Rio Grande, Saint Lawrence or Columbia rivers we could not learn. He knew nothing of Ander son and the . other -two fugitives.' This may, however, be only a blind and we give it for what it is worth. "Anchor Brand" Claims thb Prize. Swain county comes to the front with tobacco measuring 78 inches- from tip to tip of opposite leaves. This shows that old Swain is just trying to spread her self on the. new tobacco crop but then she had "Anchor Brand" .Fertilizer to help her.' The above tobacco grows on the plantation of Barnard and Penni niman, near Charleston. These gentle men claim, in addition to the "Anchor Brand," they also applied a good quantity of elbow grease. Swain promises to be well represented at the Fair. - . -..t i Here's Richness for You. The Burnsville Pioneer says : "By private letter we learn that a nugget of gold weighing two pounds was found re-, cently at the Vein Mountain Gold Min ing Company's mine.'in.McDowell coun ty, by Mr. B.
