Messrs. Editors. . The thanks of this community are due Dunn's Rock ' Lodge A.; F. & A. M. for a very pleasant gather ing last Saturday. Promptly at 10 o'clock the T3retbren.of the mystic tie" left their Hall and;withr Marshal Allison in charge, marched to IIume Pai4,'preceded by the Band. Even the rain did not scrfouslv interfere. Mar shal Allison was equal to the emergency, ne promptly gave the order- 'Break ranks, march to the Episcopal church-ibr inspection of baskets.' The order was as promptly obeyed, and we assure you that in this case Bro. Thomas Wood. W. M., did not occupy the "rearmost rank of ine runningest regiment' that ever stormed baskets. Philosptiers ; tell us that sound travels 1100 teet per second, but in their calculations they have made no allowance for ' "surrounding circum stances." A call to rise at 5 o'clock in the morning requires 30 minutes to climb one short flight of stairs, but a call to in spect such baskets as were present on this occasion travels faster than light Indeed I think Bro. Wood heard the thought ere Mr. Allison gave utterance to it : Arrived at the church, on tables temporized fron, carpenter's benches, was spread a most sumptuous repast that all seemed to enjoy. These social gath erings, oases, are healthful, mentally, morally, socially, physically. The real pleasure they afford the young; the un bending, the relaxation 7 they - occasion the older members of the community are ends that repay well the labor of secur ing them. The stranger still lingers in this "Land of the Sky." A railroad, a railroad, my kingdom for a railroad that everybody might come and see this beautiful little county of ours. The apathy of our people, wheth er real or apparent in regard to railroad connection with the . outside , world amounts to selfishness. With an abun dant crop, beyond what we, ourselves can reasonably consume; with" others want ing the very things we have and to spare and ready to exchange for our surplus things we so much need, and we still wait for somebody to bring us a railroad is is .Messrs. Editors, I wont say it. I remember attending the first barbecue held in. the interest of the Greenwood and Augusta, now the Augusta and Knoxville.R. R. So determined were the people, to have the road that the farmers along the proposed road who had not the "spot cash" offered to donate a portion of their lands lying on either side of the track. They afterward secur ed convicts and begun work, , paying their subscription in meat, bread,- veg etables and everything thaUa convict could eat. Thev were in earnest. The train reached Greenwood long ago and will soon be at Spartanburg. In the '.'Long Ago" the people of Laurens. S. C. said "God made the ridge from . Green ville to Newberry for a railroad track." The Lord had not done so much for Asheville, she-supplemented her defic ency by a liberal subscription to the then proposed Greenville and Columbia R. R. For years Laurens had only a little branch road that competed with tne apple wagons from the mountains. God may have made this valley suitable for a railroad track, but oite thing is certain. He intended for man to build the track and put the engine on It Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe and Haywood had better step in, while the "waters are troubled in South Carolina and over m Tennessee.
