M. - f For the Asheville Citizen ' THE CITY SCALES. . . Turnpike, N. C Oct. 1 2, '85. ,. Messrs. Editor .I notice an ordinance passed by your city authorities say ingfafter; rock -fell nh til the -drking' force that the town has gone to the expense of buying and .putting up scales and have hired a man to weigh for the public and be it resolved that any one else weigh ing for pay .or jwithout "pay. should pay twenty-five-dollars for every such offence. Now, Messrs. Editors, I suppose "that those in town who favor such an ordin. ance will be ready to say that it is none of our business in the country what laws they have in the incorporation and they are right until they pass laws that affect us as farmers. If tne weighing lee had staid at what it was I don't suppose any one would have, pnt up scales to weigh for the public, but when they made the fee 10 cents er head for sheen and cattle alike while it seems a small fee it amounts to about 14 per cent of what our sheep will bring. Thinkjof it, 10 men bring in 100 head of sheep each, your man you pay to weigh "them can in" less t han half the day weigh- them all, and the fee would pay for the scales.. I think that youf city fathers did not study this matter over as they ought for some of them are merchants and buy ? corn and meat from the farmers and weigh it on their scales and are not fined for it and I ean't see why one man is not as good as another in this respect. --We farmers thins we ought to have the privilege of getting our cattle and sheep ami. hay, weighed as cheap as we can and if your city with its five thousand inhabitants cannot weigh as cheap as two ooys. they can sell their scales ani"; Quit, Those hnvD hruirrht. their spaIph m. wf4T Jm Hio on them, l think wo need ajitue tariff reform close at home. I think we should learn the golden rule and do to others as we would they should do unto us. We all feel that we ought to have the privil ege of selling to whom we please and also of getting who we please to weigh what we sell. I have-talked with many persons about this matter and have not found one yet that favors the ordinance. . ; ; : - y Yours truly; " J.C Curtis. Me. N. W.
