Secretary of the Association, had the misfortune, a serious one for him, of losing his family horse. It was taken sick at the i air Grounds Friday evening, and died yesterday morning. . The auctioneers of the premium tobacco sold at the Fair Grounds ast Friday were J. B. Crenshaw and J. T. Barnett, commission merchants. of Lynchburg, va. We are glad to welcome these gentlemen to our boards. We are pleased to meet in our city Mr. Toy, of Atlanta, Ga., who visits this section in the interest of the Estey Organ Company. The Estey organ is a very popular one hereabouts, very many being in use. Mr. Hiram Rogers informs us that Mr. Erastus ""Ferguson, Mr. B. F, Clark, Messrs. John Justice and James Ledford, on Fines' Creek, have some of the finest tobacco this season he ever saw. Also Mr. Silas Green of the same locality. We like always to notice the thrift and industry of our colored citizens. We notice with much pleasure the sale by J. R.Davis of Jackson coun ty, of a horse raised by himself for which he obtained $210.00, bought on the Fair grounds last Friday, J. K. Davis is a colored man, and three vears ago took the writer and J udge Shepherd from Webster to Frank lin, and his intelligence and courtesy won upon both oi us. Chief Marshall Corpening, with his corps of excellent and attentive assistants, won the admiration and thanks of all concerned for their very constant, and prompt services during the Fair. Everything moved alone as smoothly as clock work. " The superintendents of departments, and Judges, all did their work faithfully and well, greatly to the assistance of the association and the success of the Fair. Their labors were delicate and onerous, owing to the very large and superiority of all the exhibits, but.they performed them well, and impartially, and we trust, satisfac torily to every one concerned. Mr. Feank Eeynolds. This gentleman gave na a pleasant call yesttnlav. He carries on a very exten sive tanneiy at Ayr Post Office, Ruther ford county, and his goods "command reaily sa.e.'on account of their superior qualities. He i-urchases hides through out this and adjoining ,States.-and only buys such as are perfect in . all respects: and his tanning is always excellent.- He has a lart:e trade in this feectien, ana deserves it. - I herewith bee to call your attention to my . weil, assorted stock of Fancy China and Bohemian Glassware in all colors. Our friend Idibarbe was in cha1gel of the Ladies' department at , the Fair. Of course, he thought every body who entered the hall with any thing in their arms, had something to exhibit. The little nurse ; of Mr. Satterthwaite, nee Miss Hester Smathers walked in with a very precious arratui, - neatly wrapped with beautitut embroidery, &c. Aire. Liabarbe spied something !ieciuily I hne for exhibition. lie approached the little girl, and holding out his nanus to receive .the package, ask ed: "this is Komethirtg to exhibii?" The girl held on , to her jiacknge, with a look of astonishment, which troubled the attentive officer, and lie again put the question, with : a movement to take it. "About that time a sweet little voice was heard beneath the folds, and the truth pre sented itself. It was Mrs. Satterth waite's - little baby. Mr. - Labarbe beat a hasty retreat. We all value the efforts made by those interested in the Fair Association of Western Carolina, and appreciate the greai good they have done, and will do. in exhibiting the wonderful resour ces of this favored land. . There can be but one opinion of the display of farm products, it was perfectly niagmucent, and if it could be pre served, for such a length of time, as to allow the numerous visitors here in the coming winter to examine it, thev would surely form a Lvery fa vorable opinion of the capabilities of this section, i rom their nature. however, it would be impracticable to preserve the farm products, but an opportunity is offered to keep here a permanent display of woods and minerals, which it is hoped our town people, will not allow it tail. We see irom your issue or tnis morning that Mr. Poindexter's fine selection of woods will be located at our Club Room, and it is to be hoped, the members of that valued institution will see that it is enlarged from time to time. And welrre fur ther informed that Dr. C. D. smith proposes to place permanently on exhibition in Asheville, his very su perior collection of minerals. He has thought of confering this kind ness on Asheville for some time past, but lias been deterred by want of a suitable room. This difficulty is now removed and a location has been offered which Mr -Smith" ap'-r proves of, but he says it will require ten or twelve show cases to hold his collection, and surely we ought not' to require him to incur this expense for our benefit. Will you not Messr?. Editors propose that a small fund be contributed" for this pur poser rrooamy one nunarea or one hundred and fifty dollars will suffice.
