space in your largely circulated
.paper to state that I have recently
discovered a vein of. specular iron,

J. McF. Hudson, M. E.
The grand jury, Mr. R. C. Clayton,
foreman, has been a very busy body
this week, and have lost no oppor
tunity to "enquire into and due
presentment make" of any and all
ofleners "against the peace and dig
nity of the State." The arduous
duties of ihe week have kept the
gentlemen ngh t closely " conhned,
but, they have not suffered for the
necessaries of life during this time.
Fruit has gone up by the basketful,
and big baskets at that, and paper
bags of good things from the grocers',
and the jury wo.uld enquire and eat.
It being a sort of close communion
affair the reporter was not allowed
to see all that was . in the basket,
and, knowing the gentlemen com
posing the body we would scorn to
suggest there was any thing under
the apples 'in the basket. They
performed their duties well,' any
way, and we hope enjoyed their stay.
Thb New Town of Whittier.
. We are not in the.habit of seeing
new towns spring up in a night, like
Jonah's gourd. Our ' towns have
been planted, and they creep, and
they gradually become something
with the rest of time corroding their
tardy progress. The railroads are
changing all this; and a vitality has
been imparted to all the towns west
of the Ridge which is maryellous.
We ' learn. tBatthe new town of
Whittier in Swain county promises
to realize all" the anticipations' of its
proiector. The first thing to do was
to provide building materials. The
forests were there, but there was no
lumber. Now streets are being laid
off and graded. A large steam saw
mill, a wagon factory, furniture,
&c, is to be constructed by a joint
Stock company. As soon as lumber
is prepared,- lrom 30 to fifty dwell
ings, and iu or twelve stores win pe
immediately erected. Roads are be-
ing graded at au sections, a very im
portant one to Franklin. : Large
tracts of land are being cleared for
tobacco and fruit. . -
We are indebted to Mr. Natt
Atkinson, Jr., . for our present in
formation. ' :
Dr. James F, Hibbard, of Rich
mond, Ind.,; arrived at ; the Eagle
Hotel yesterday to visit Mr: Furgu
son, of that place, who has been ill
here for some ' days, lie w;as ac
companied by Mrs. Furguson. We
are glad to learn that Mr. Furguson
is somewhat improved. - . . ;
" Mr. Pleas Israel says he will have

r Remember, the Citizen offers ten
dollars in gold, to be given the pro
ducer in Western Carolina or East
Tennessee who obtains the highest
price for tobacco on any warehouse
floor in Asheville during this 'sea- '
son, Several citizens ' have sugges
ted that a good fund be raised to
supplement the. Citizen premium
for the same purpose, and expresses
a readiness to contributethereto.

The offerings at the Asheville and
the Farmer' War shouees yesterday
were light. Good breaks at the Bun
combe and Banner warehouse. A
large proportion of the leaf was " of
a nondescript character, being
scraps and odd lots brought in by
the farmers. The buyers wre not
enthusiatic in the bidding, on ac
count, doubtless, of the character of
the stock onered. The Buncombe
warehouse sold 52001bs for $470.00
an average of 8icts per pound. In
this there was only a light sprink
ling of good tobacco. The Banner
Warehouse sold about same amount
with quality, of - stock and prices
ranging higher. Mr. J. G. Sams, of
Cocke County T.enn. sold five lots at
an average ot 14cts. W. B. Pickens
of Cocke County four lots at an
average of 15cts Payne & Rogers of
Sandy Mush, three at lycts. Abel
King of Sandy Mush four lota at
16cts. A. E Ingle, of Emma, six lots
at 12cts. Barnett & Perry 'of Homi
ny four lots at 15cts. W. "M. Buck-
ner, ol lirantvuie, seven lots at lbcts,
B. F. Wilson Stockville, four lots at
18cts. Mr. B. Buckner of Grantville
sold four lots which averaged 17cta.
Mr. B. had only the most inferior
grades and scraps and that all of
his sixteen barns yet to be sold -is
better than what he sold yesterday.
We noticed that the lollowmg gen
tlemen from Hay woddcounty had to
bacco on the floor at the Buncombe;

Battery Porter Hotel.
Col. Frank Coxe reached the city
yesterday ,"and to-day the work of
locating lines- for excavation will be
done, and excavation begin at once.
The hotel will be located upon the
very top of the hill, thus . securing
full view or the entire surrounding
mountains, which from this point is
pre-eminently grand. We have seen
the ground plan of the building,
prepared by Messrs. Hazelhurst and
Huckel, architects, of Philadelphia.
The whole plan will be here in a few
days, when we. will give a full des
cription of the mammoth building.
The expenditure of from $120,000 to
$150,000, as is contemplated by Col.
Coxe, will transform the old Battery
hill into the moBt attractive point
in the South.
The Rain
Did comparatively little damag
to the Railroad, considering th
quantity of water which fell, and all
will be remedied to-day. - Only "a
few hours' delay was caused on the
main line. " On the Murphy line
several slides and washouts occur
red, which prevented the passage of
trains through yesterday. AH will
be right by this evemng.

THE PEACH BARK BEETLE.
.Ciiapkl IfiLt, N,.C, Oct 28th, 1883.
Many of tbe peach,, plana and cherry
trees at this place are infested, irith a
minute, cylindrical beetle, of a dark
brown color, about 1 lGand 1 10 inches
in length, and 1 23 inches, in diameter.
Observations made upon, a 1 number of
peach trees indicate that about ttrortbirds
of them are affected more or less,o(n
very badly ; while as a rule every dead
peach tree shows marks pi their having
been present. '; 7 '"' :"' .
During tbe fall of the year the ?feinal
beetle bores a. cylindrical hole in ! the
bark just large enough to permit -f her
passing into it The bole is from J to-1
inch in length and usually parallel with
the grain. 'In this passage, which . is
called the "main gallery," the beetle de-
poaita a few eggs, and usually retreats' to
the entrance where se remains ' block -.
istgnpijie paasaga to preivenk other lo
sects from destroying her; eggs, or young-.
Mhny times she remains here to die, and
soon being attacked by a fungus growth
completely blocks the entrance even in
death. When the eggs hatch the young
larvae, or grubs, begin toeed Upon the
inner layer of the bark, thus cutting off
the flow of the sap. , Each bores a cylin
drical, sinuous passage which enlarges',
with the increasing size of the borer. .
Entomologists call this beetle - Fhloeo
tribns liminaris (Harris.) ' About five
years ago quite - a scare existed among
the peach growers in parts of the State
of New York because of the damage
done by this insectr1-". Whole crcharda
were destroyed. ' It was estimated that
it required about two to-three years for
these beetles to kill a tree when once at
tacked. ,
I wish to call the attention of the fruit
growers of the State, or any one interes
ted in the subject, to this matter, thai it
may be known how general and injurious
are the ravages of this beetle. By exam
ining closely the limbs and trunks of af-
fected peach and cherry trees, from ' one
to lour inches m diameter, to a- Bmall
holes can be Been, some times with -gun
exuding. If the tree has .been, affected
for a j ear or two. by shaving . fT the
bark carefully the white grub-like larvae -can
be seen. : . : .
Rxuidiks. Prof. C. V. Riley, of the
from his experience with other borers of
this family, feels "satisfied that a good
coating of a mixture of lime, BUlphnr and
pans green will protect a neathy' tree .
that is not yet attacked.- aa lone as the
coatinglasts.'.' .. ; ,-:v.l . ,i ..;
A coating of gas tar was suggested by
one who had used it with peroct success
iu aestroying otner borers. ,, -.r
From my own observations I wonldr
suggest in addition to the above ?me
dies, the cutting down and burning all
badly infested trees or limbs. The. cus
tom, generally sancbsed to be economic.
of using dead nortiona tit- fruit tmM for
pea brash." I rfigardas arniciou It .
would be safer, and far cheaper inhe
end to obtain healthy brush from forest ,
trees. .'. ....
I should esteem'anv. information from'
diffeient sections of the State in .regard '
to the extent and injuries of this ; insect
