To do this such industrial enterprises as we have must be encouraged and supported given a preference and others established. The working people of a community are its bone and smew, its very ale in truth. When these are constantly employ ed and are comfortable the commu nity prospers and-grows,1 and no place ever had too many if good, regular, remunerative work could be given then. ' Ho place ever tailed to languisn where the working men who are there are only casually employed, at unrenumerative wages, and living frouj day to day on uncer iainty. Every interest is involved in haying in Asheville a contented, prosperous, constantly growing wor king class. Therefore, as one means to an end, our citizens who have the real interests .of Asheville- at heart, and who believe there are others in this world entitled to at least a com fortable chance to live and breathe where they are willing, and capable, to work for it, should co-operate with the organization for which Mr. Liindsey speaks in establishing and aiding industrial enterprises in our city. We cannot tell what can be done until we try; we cannot enter upon or devise a plan, without con sultation. "We would be glad if the Knights would appoint a good com mittee, ' and let us see , if we cannot get together thr of our citizens, and discuss, and devise, and act. ' We are permitted to use extracts, from a letter to one of pur citizens, written by a lady of Charleston dated on Friday 3d inst, at 1 o'clock A. MVv' 1 ' ?This is Friday 1 o'clock a. m., and it is me oik ume wai x nave ueen auie ui sit down and compose, mvself to write yen, after the horrors of Tuesday night. We had all, that is Minnie and - myself, Cob S. and Robert, Frank E. Jule and Robbie been seated on the piazza. The day had been excessively hot, all felt wearied with the heat, and Bobbie and Tale bad gone to their rooms and retired. In a few moments after, all had conclud ed to retire. I had put out the lamp in the sitiing-room, and just turned out the one in the hall when I began 'to ' hear ia rumbling which increased in violence and the house seemed to me- to be totter ing . on its foundation. I put out my hand to catch, the bannisters, but they shook so I could scarcely get hold of them and I felt so Bick aha dizy that I could scarcely keep on my feet - I begrtr to hear glass breaking and -things crash ing up stairs, and all who had gone up stairs came rushing down two steps at a time making for the street, to which we all rushed, with scarcely enough sense to know how we ' got there. Robbie and Jule jumped out of bed and rushed into the house without stopping to think of their clothes, but by the time they got in tbe violence of the shock had passed and they went back and dressed. ' Bat in that few seconds of time what destruction and desolation have been caused 1 It makes me shudder now as I think of it; it was the most awful ex perience of my life. When we got into the street it was crowded with people, I dont think a single person remained inside of a house, and all were telling their experience. Pretty soon we began to see fires bursting out in every direc tion, look - which way you would,' and then I thought the fearful end of all things was at hand, that what the earth quake had not destroyed the fire would. And so all night through we waited and watched its progress, as all the shanty's in George, between King and St. Phil lips' streets, were burning, and we knew not how soon it might reach us. We tied up clothing in sheets and brought down stairs; had vessels filled with wa ter and set on the piazza, and then, when the course of the fire shifted a little I sent around to look after Mrs. L. and Annie, who were driven from their house which was so shattered as to be beyond repair. Dr. L.'s house was also badly shattered, and they fled to the College Campus, but so soon as C. become com posed they come here, and have remain ed ever since. Mrs. L. and Annie remain ed all night in the 6treet, the latter in a fainting condition. They came here in the morning. Dr. L.'s house is a wreck, also the L.'s. We have escaped most wonderfully well compar ed with hundreds of others who are houseless and homeless. Our chimneys are all gone except the one on the kitch en, which was fortunate, as our cooking can go on just the same. The walls are a little cracked all over the house. The chimneys, or what was left of them, were in such a dangerous condition that I hir ed two men yesterday to come and take them down, which they did for 75 cents each. To-day you cannot get the same thing: done under $ 3, $4, or $5 apiece. Many and many a one here knows not where to go for shelter, for every one who lived in a brick house is afraid to venture back, they are in such a tottering condition. I now provide for to-day, leaving the morrow to take, care of itself. None of us have slept in a bed this week, all stay in the sitting room, feeling it easier to get out in case of an other shock. I fix every body as com fortably as I can, but there is not much sleep for any one. Last night Dr. L. and C. slept in the stable on the hay. They have been more demoralized than any ono else. .
