Mayor Aston, from committee to solicit
subscriptions, reported that fifteen hun
dred dollars had been collected besides
other gifts, which make a total contribu
tion of 11,850. ; ' '
Mr. H. B. King"nioved that steps bo
taken looking to the sending of Imechan
ics to Charleston, and that a vommittee
be appointed to see the railroad authori
ties and ascertain what can be done in
the premises.
Messrs. A. B. King, Jordan Stone, W.
E. Breeee and Theo.-Hobgood were
appointed said committee,
, The meeting then adjourned. J
Takes His'n Stbaight.
. We learn that Mr. Thos. J. Candler
and other republicans of Buncombe who
are dissatisfied with the misfit concern
named by the "mass meeting" some time
ago, Messrs. Baird and Pearson and
others, have called a straight-out repu
blican convention to meet in Asheville
on the 16th inst to take such steps as
may seem in accord with the dignity of
true republicans, lhe more these repu
blicans think, ot tne tninz tne more they
cant see how they have any pig in the
political pen as now fixed up nnder the
stock law m this county. Messrs, Uaira
and Pearson, personally, have been un
derstood to be stock law men, and they
certainly have been ' understood to be
democrats. When they have changed
on either question must have been very
lately, and, to our republican friends
most sadden just about the time that
"nominations" were in order, and with
Mr. Lusk who has been understood all
along to be a stock law republican, the
antis of that (party think their late mass
meeting has resulted in a orettv and verv
unsavory kettle of fish. So they propose
to open their mouths and speak on the
16th. We shall await their con clarions
with much interest.
Let Us Work Together.:
Let our working men and onr business
men generally, (all business men are
working men for that matter) unite,
form an association, for the purposes of
devising measures, and plans, and work
ing together, for the mutual good of each
and the general good of our community.
Onr own people would be astonished at
tne results Which would follow such a
concert of action, such sympathy of co
operation, such a unity of purpose. The
mechanics, and working-class eenerailr
of Asheville, as distinguished from other
vocations, are unusually conservative,
energetic, enterprising and, in very many
instances, intelligent. Very many of
them own property, here, and the pro
perty owner every where, necessarily
must be a conservative, and if not a fan
atic, a progressive citizen.' Onr mer
chants, and other business men generally
are intelligent, liberal-minded, progres
sive people, a credit to any community.
All of these comb ined, when combined
for a general and well understood pur
pose and enterprise, constitute an invin
cible power for the good of all. It is to
their mutual individual and collective
interest to work together ina common
sympathy, and with a- common -object
uur city presents opportunities for enter
prises which are unusual, and which,- if
entered upon, must redound to the rapid
devel6pement of our community. The
means within the control ot our own
people, when united, will accomplish a
vast deal, an astonishing result, in the
direction of the -development of -many
useful enterprises. Let us work together;
let us unite together, let us put our means
together and push and pull together and
see, and be astonished at, the result. We
do not suggest this upon any idea Of phi
lanthropy. We appeal,' In this, to the
natural selfishness or every citizen, bus
iness man, of Asheville. We Want all to
co-operate, the one with the other, and
all together, for the good of each and
alL Come together, friends. Asheville
needs such efforts.it offers good returns
if we will but put forth our united efforts
to obtain them. Don't let any one sit
back and refuse to ioin because he mav
not get the lion's share of the good re
sults which may follow. - Let all work
together, and let each have the share
that a general success and prosperity and
nis own energy nay and will secure
him.. Let us unite and work together.

A Change at the PostOffce.
Postmaster Weaver has removed
Mr. C- B. Moore who has for some
years been the very capable and
courteous assistant postmaster and
money-order clerk at the Asheville
post-office.'? wOur young friend Jim
mie Young has. been appointed to
succeed him.
While we like to see Jimmie
in the postoffice or elsewhere, and
shall be pleased to see his pleas
ant face through the window, yet
we must express real regret at the
removal of Mr. Moore. He came to
Asheville some eight or ten years
ago a young man, and entered upon
duty at the postoffice, and by his
apt capacity, sterling integrity and
unchanging courtesy, won the es
teem and confidence of all citizens.
He was generally endorsed by our
people for retention when a recent
change took place in the postmast
tership, and it would have been to
the satisfaction of our community
for him to have remained. What
ever he may enter upon he will
have the best wishes of our people.
. The earthquake had a serious ef
fect in' North Carolina as well as in
our neighbor Slate. Our friend Mr.
S. vM.- Thomas, of. Laurinburg,
Richmond Vouhty", tells us of serious
damage in rhifr place. V He ;left phis

shock, for Asheville. When he left
he did not think, any ; damage had
been done to. his own or 'any oth er

which informed him- that his resi
dence, (a largo brick dwelling) was
so very badly damaged by the shock
of last Tuesday night that it had to
be abandoned . " entirely, and the
family now occupied another build r

our friend, and he left yesterday for

The complaints we are daily get
ting in regard to theiajlure othe
Citizen to reach subscribers at vari
ous, and many, offices, are simply
disgraceful to the postal authori
ties. One complaint cow before; us,
from - California Creek, : Madison
county, urges. us to; ask. -the postal
authorities to.require the post-mas-
f7S tvti .routerQro 7 Abheyille to

once irx.two and three weeks-v. This
we know, to be gross carelessness
somewhere. And this is just . such
complaint as we have .this week
from more than a-half dozen" dif
ferent sections,' complaining from
different causes &c. We again call
attention to this matter. There
must be outrageous carelessness oh
part of .post-masters and - route
agents somewhere. We shall con.
tinue to call attention to the trouble
until it ceases; and we hope all who
fail "to receive their paper will let
us know .regularly. ,
After writing the above we re
ceived two other complaints, one
from Briggsville, Madison county,
the other from Gypsey P. O., N. C.
We hope to hear no more com
plaints. We had the pleasure of meeting
a gentleman ho had come direct
from Charleston., He showed us
some of the blue and yellow sand
(or mud as it is called) which has
been thrown up by trie recent shock.
Nothing about this, from the- in
formation he gives, which fully cor
responds with that we have heard
from "other reliable sources, is an
unnatural resultant of the recent se
vere convulsion to which that sec
tion was subjected, ..and nothing
about it can be traced to a volcanic
movement He also showed us
some ot the ? pebbles which . were
said to have fallen upon a portion
oi tne city. Tnat these nebbles fell
is a certainty well ' authenticated;
where tney came from, or how they
came to fall, cannot be authentica
ted. . These . pebbles, or flint rocks,
comprise the most singular and in
explicable phenomena, to us, of this
recent extraordinary event.
They are certainly stranger to that
section, they are equally stranger3to
volcanic characteristics; what they
are, or now tney came to occur in
Charleston at this particular junc
ture of affairs is something entirely
beyond our ken. The gentleman
reports having seen two very briL
liant meteors the night before - the
fall of the pebbles. They partake
far more of meteoric than a volcanic
character.
This pebble circumstance affords
the most interesting subject for
scientific study of all the subjects
forced upon an innocent public by
the 'recent shocks. A piece of a
pebble has been given Capt. Breese,
of the First National Bank by his
friend, who will take pleasure in
showing it - . , . t .. .;;"
The gentleman also stated that
the devastation was as great as ' re
ported, and it was feared by many
.would prove greater than reported,
but the people had gone f- work
earnestly and bravely, to repair
damages,' and are ready, in a great
measure, to responed to all business
demands which may be made upon
them.- .: - .
