Unsafe Buildings. - ' We desire to renew the suggestion w have repeatedly made thathejrf should be an inspector of alU b&ifci ings hereafter to tbe . erected here. Public safety demands -It,, and the public should have that , , safety, guaranteed to them by the authori ties Into whose hands . they have entrusted power. Those authorr tiea have exercised Hhat 'power in the control of the material to be used within certain , defined limits. They'have the same power in rela tion to the structure of such build ings as they have over the materi als. " k - The CharlestfMi : Courier r' and the New "York rTorW,in -relation to their respective cities have taken up the subject - with earnestness. ' The World with the illustrations of Bud denseik's faulty and criminal work before it has abundant material for censure and counsel. The News and Courier has itsillustratian provided by the effects of the recent earth quake. ' Buildings fair anct . stable to look upon, tumbled down,' like piles of loose brick. In fact. some of the houses were merely piles of loose brick; for in cleaning them off in the work of rebuilding, the mor tar was' found to be loose sand with bo little adhesiveness that it was knocked away by the workmen without the aid of a trowel.' Such things have been done here, if not in kind, at least ia degreee. Our worthy Mayor, to whom we conversed some days ago, referred to a well known building in this city, largely occupied, which some years ago underwent the process of improvement .() by the enlarge ment ol doors and ' windows. Over the tops of these were laid strips of wood instead ol bricks turned in circles or supports of iron. , "In case of fire," said he, "In that building I would not dare to order, the young men of our fire company to enter to save it." And this is a dan ger more real - than tanciiul, The success in extinguishment of fire here with ,tha .tine sup ply of water, and the " increasing skill of the firemen is marvellous; yet the flames sometimes get be yond control; and we have seen the result in immediately obliterated, walls, and our brave boys escaping with tbe lives by the, akin" of their teeth. Public Bafety largely predomi nates over private interests, and it must be secured even if there is im plied censure upon contractors and builders. Of these, the writer of this has no knowledge as connected with a single building. But he does know that certain buildings in the city have been pronounced unsafe after deliberate examination. Other buildings betray their infirm ity to the casual eye. Ihere must be security providedl lor tne luture.. JNew York and Charleston are . old cities. Their evils are engrained into their con 8titution8. Asheville is a new city just mtering upon its career !of growth and enlargement Let safe ty and stability be secured along witu its progress. - Create the Building Inspection. It is well known that the Richmond and Danville owns the Western North Carolina road and also the Knoxville and Augusta road and mat tne Jrencn xsroao, wmcn will be'the link connecting the two, will be built chiefly by stockholders of the Rich mond and Danville. , Mayor Luttrell and General Hood re turned to the city last night, both highly elated at the prospect of soon having un der way a new railroad for Knoxville. Both these gentlemen have been laboring faithfully .to bring about this result, and for their earnest efforts they deserve the gratitude of our citizens. Both have been hopeful from the beginning, even when everybody else doubted that the road would be built We had a talk with Mayor Luttrell last night after his return from Unaka. He was highly pleased with . the cordial manner in which he and Gen. Hood were met by the Richmond and Danville officials and says that he never met a more courteous party of gentlemen. He is confident that they mean business. Mayor Luttrell, who has at no time lost faith in the enterprise, says he has no doubt the road will now be built without delay. He has been in correspondence with officials of both the Richmond and Danville and the Louisville and Nash ville roads and thinks there is no doubt that it is the intention of these two great systems to meet at Knoxville. More Pleasant Views. Mr. P. P. On the whole, I have been more comforta ble here than I was at Saratoga last year.
